Year 6 Crucial Crew

The children in Year 6 have been fortunate to be accepted for Crucial Crew which takes place at the Flaxmill Maltings, Shrewsbury on Friday 5th June.  This is a very popular event which all schools in Shropshire would like to take part in but for which places are very limited.

Crucial Crew is run by the West Midlands Police Force and the aim of it is to give older children an insight in how to deal with safety hazards, such as fires and accidents, and also to make them aware of the dangers of drug/alcohol abuse.

The children will be transported by coach, leaving school at 9.00am sharp, so please ensure they arrive a little earlier that morning so that registration can be taken at 8.50am. They will return to school at approximately 3.00 p.m.

Please ensure that your child wears their school uniform – especially their sweatshirts/cardigans – as this will enable them to be identified more easily whilst there. As many of the activities take place outside, they will also need a waterproof, lightweight coat in case of inclement weather.

Children will need to bring a packed lunch. Those entitled to free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch by our caterers but you may want to supplement this with additional refreshments.

Crucial Crew request that parents ensure that their children have had something to eat before they embark on the day’s activities, especially if hot weather is forecast: children will not have a mid-morning break at this event so the earliest they will get to eat will be approx. 12.15pm. Over the years, a number of children have had to attend the first aid centre because of feeling faint, which has usually been because of lack of food or dehydration. They are allowed to carry a bottle of water around with them during the day, which they will be able to top up during their lunch break.

The cost of the trip is £5.25 per child including transport, insurance and activities.  Payment should be made via your child’s Arbor account, in the usual way prior to the date of the trip please.

We hope that all our Year 6 pupils will attend this trip. However, if you do not want your child to attend, please notify your child’s class teacher as soon as possible so that they can make alternative arrangements for your child for that day.

Class Photographs – 23rd April 2026

School photographers, Active Photographic, will be in school on the morning of Thursday 23rd April to take class group photographs of our pupils.

If you DO NOT want your child to have their photograph taken on the day, please contact the school office by the end of the school day, Wednesday 22nd April, at the latest.

Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their school uniform so they look smart for the class photograph. If your child is timetabled to do PE, they will exercise in their school uniform.

Therefore, please have them come to school wearing their school uniform and bring their pumps/trainers to change in to.

NB: Your child/ren will automatically be included in their class photograph if we do not hear from you otherwise by Wednesday 22nd April.

Year 6 Mayan Workshop 🏺

Year 6 took part in an exciting Mayan workshop to launch their new history topic.

The children explored a range of Mayan artefacts 🗿 and traditional clothing 👘, and had great fun playing a traditional Mayan game 🎲. They also learned about the Mayan alphabet ✍️ and number system 🔢, discovering how the civilisation communicated and recorded information.

To truly bring the Mayan civilisation to life, the children used VR headsets 🥽 to visit a variety of Mayan city states 🏛️, giving them a fascinating insight into daily life and architecture.

In the afternoon, creativity took centre stage as the children made traditional worry dolls 🧸 and hand‑woven baskets 🧺, inspired by Mayan culture.

A great day was had by all!

Eco Coding Workshop

Year 6 pupils visited Harper Adam’s campus today for an Eco Coding workshop!  An intense brain stretching kind of day for this fab team of girls.

Year 6 visit Shrewsbury Museum for Evolution Workshop.

This week, Elephants and Giraffes visited Shrewsbury Museum to take part in an workshop about evolution, inheritance and adaptations. The workshop is part of their new science topic, where the children are learning about how living things have changed over time, understanding fossils and how plants and animals adapt to their environment.

Year 6 enjoyed looking at a range of fossils and identifying which types they were from their characteristics. The children also learnt about how Shropshire has changed over time and discussed the work of Charles Darwin. Finally, year 6 learnt about how humans have evolved and how bodies have changed.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and really impressed the facilitator, Ali, with their fossil knowledge!

Author Visit-Catherine Wilkins

Our KS2 pupils met comedian and author Catherine Wilkins, who joined us to chat about her children’s book series Café Chaos. The story follows Hope Crumble and her dysfunctional family as they run the delightfully chaotic Café Crumble together.

Catherine shared fantastic insights into her writing process — from writing what you know (she worked in cafés and hospitality) to using character conflict to spark a great story, and weaving in plenty of humour.

Her books have an anti‑bullying message and she reminded pupils that bullying can always be solved by speaking to trusted adults and never facing problems alone.

Our children asked some great questions and we were added some signed copies to our book shelves.

🌟School Production 2026: Tales Untold 2026

This year’s production has been nothing short of extraordinary. Tales Untold –an original script written by the brilliant Mrs Stennett—brought together a whirlwind of fairy‑tale favourites and legendary villains in a way we’ve never seen before. Princesses, Queens, Fairy godmothers, pirates, Darth Vader, and even Voldemort all shared the stage in a magical mash‑up that could only happen at Coleham.

Mrs Stennett created an original show because our school is overflowing with talent, and she wanted many, many main characters giving lots of children the chance to shine.  She didn’t leave anyone behind from auditions and with a cast and crew of over 90 pupils, this was our largest production to date—and without doubt, our favourite.   Creativity brings inclusivity💛

Most importantly Performing Arts is live and well at Coleham-singing, dancing, acting, public speaking, teamwork and confidence will help our children succeed in life and bring joy to themselves and others.

At its heart, Tales Untold carried a message we hope stays with our pupils long after the final bow: Be kind. Be a good friend. And most of all – write your own story in life.

💛 A Huge Thank You

Productions like this happen because of passion, teamwork, and a community that shows up for one another.  The buzz in school has been heart warming, all our pupils watched the dress rehearsal, the corridors have been the back stage this week with props & costumes taking over and characters coming and going.  But most of all the whole school staff lending a hand, supporting the team and lifting each other up.

To our incredible staff:

  • Mrs Rank – Prompting with patience and precision
  • Miss Featherston & Mrs Porrett – Music & singing tuition that lifted every scene
  • Mr Williams – Tech wizardry
  • Miss Heap – Costumes and set design that transformed our hall into another world
  • Mrs Morgan – Choreography full of energy
  • Miss Nash – Make Up

And to every other member of staff and every parent who helped backstage, served refreshments, managed crowds, and supported our pupils to make everything run smoothly.

🌟 And the BIGGEST Thank You…

To Mrs Stennett — the heart, engine, and imagination behind it all. Producing and directing a cast and crew of over 100 people on top of the day job is no small feat, yet she led every rehearsal with a smile, calm confidence, and what seemed like effortless grace. Her creativity, dedication, and belief in our pupils made Tales Untold 2026 possible.

Legally Blonde

Thank you to Meole Brace Secondary for inviting Year 6 to their School Performance of Legally Blonde.  A lovely glimpse into secondary life for Year 6 and inspiration for our own drama cast who take to the stage next week for Coleham’s 2026 Production Tales Untold.

Year 6 Maya Workshop: 14th April

We are excited to share with you that on Tuesday 14th April, we will be welcoming Widget Workshops in to share a ‘Maya’ workshop day with Year 6.  Using the latest technology, the children will explore the world of The Maya. Working in pairs, they will visit important Maya sites such as Tikal, Palenque, Uxmal and Chichen Itza, as well as swimming in a cenote. They will also explore the Maya number system and calendar and also have a go at weaving and creating their own worry doll.

As we have no other way of funding the workshop we would be grateful if parents can contribute £6.70 per child towards the cost. Payment is to be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the workshop please. Many thanks.

Year 6 Evolution Worshop at Shrewsbury Museum, 23rd March

As part of this term’s science curriculum work on Evolution, we have arranged for Year 6 to visit Shrewsbury Museum on Monday 23rd March.  One class will visit in the morning after registration; the other after lunch, returning in time for normal end-of-day collection.

During their visit, they will look at a number of exhibits relevant to their study and each class will take part in an “Investigating Evolution” workshop.

Pupils should wear normal school uniform for the trip.  They should also bring with them a warm/water-proof coat, in case of inclement weather. No spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £3.70 per child. Payment should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip please. Many thanks.

Poetry Workshop

As part of our World Book Week celebrations, our Year 5 and 6 pupils had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a poetry workshop with Chris Tay from Shropshire BookFest.

The children explored how literature can be brought to life through performance, drama, and creative expression. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they transformed words on a page into powerful spoken performances.

A huge thank you to Chris for inspiring our young writers and performers! 🌟

✨ Coleham Hosts Primary Maths Challenge! ✨

What an incredible day at Coleham as we welcomed teams from St Martin’s, Much Wenlock, and John Wilkinson for our very first Year 6 Maths Challenge! 🔢🎉

Designed and led by Maths Lead Miss Featherston, the event brought excitement, teamwork, and some impressive problem‑solving. We were also treated to Mr Larkham’s best Carol Vorderman impression as he took charge of the whiteboard🤣🧮

The buzzer rounds brought tension as teams battled it out in quick‑fire maths challenges. ⏱️⚡ There was a great spirit of competition, and not only did the competitors do well, but the audience of Coleham fans were excellent in their support and appreciation of all.  Not only that, but COLEHAM WON THE TROPHY! A win for Coleham, and a win for MATHS.

A HUGE well done to all the pupils who took part. 🌟👏

All things SATS after school drop-in session

We are inviting parents to attend an informal drop-in session where we will be looking at a variety of SAT materials. The drop-in session will be on Thursday 26th February and we will be available from 3:20 pm until 5:00 pm to answer any questions you may have regarding the SATs. We are doing this prior to parents evening so that your appointment will be about your child’s learning rather than SATs information.

Year 6 SATs revision books

In response to the large number of requests from parents for SATs revision materials, the school has purchased a math, reading and GPS revision book for each child. Your child will be given these after half term and will have a schedule to complete the questions.  The schedule will be published on Dojo for reference each week and will run Friday to Friday. We would like you to support your child with the completion of this each week, along with daily reading and times table practise.

Useful revision resources

In the run up to the SATs, we will be using a range of resources, which you can also access at home:

🌍 International Day 2026 🌍

What an incredible celebration of culture and community! Our International Day was bursting with learning across RE, Geography, Foreign-Languages, Art and PE.

Pupils enjoyed German lessons with Frau Jones, and we were thrilled to welcome so many parent guest speakers, each sharing presentations about countries close to their hearts. Some of our own children even stepped up to present—such confidence and pride on display.

A special shout‑out to Karil in Year 6, who created a brilliant PowerPoint to teach Reception all about Ukraine.

Throughout the day, classes took part in vibrant dance workshops inspired by Russian, Turkish, Brazilian, Cuban, and Aboriginal traditions. Year 4 also produced some stunning Aboriginal‑inspired artwork.

Our Catering Team treated everyone to an International lunch, and of course the day wouldn’t be complete without our Amazing International Food Market for families, which was a huge hit once again.

A heartfelt thank you to all our parent guest speakers for giving their time and sharing their cultures so generously. And an extra special thank you to Eatwise Chinese Takeaway and former pupil Alvin for serving up fantastic food for our pupils—such kindness and community spirit.

Families, if you’re planning a takeaway one evening, please consider supporting this wonderful local family business.

What a day to remember! 🌟

This year’s production is an original play based on our favourite fairy tales, written by Mrs Stennett, in order to make sure all children have a chance to SHINE! 🌟

Tickets will be on sale later in the year. We can’t wait to share it with you.

Drama Club presents…The Flaxmill: Research, Rehearsal, Performance

Drama Club began researching and developing their production in September, where they were invited to the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Museum to conduct some ‘R&D’, learning about the lives of the mill workers in the late 18th and early 19th century. From there, they devised scenes together as an ensemble and took on roles inspired by real people were were employed there. Lisa Husdon, community engagement officer at Shewsbury Flaxmill, helped to fact-check the content and showed the pupils artefacts to help them understand the context of the world of the show. Drama Club rehearsed for 14 weeks, including a Saturday rehearsal in school and a rehearsal with Choir Club at the historic Dye House, culminating in 3 performances for carers and parents, KS1 and KS2.

The Flaxmill – A Coleham Production

An Incredible Celebration of Local History and the Arts

Coleham School pupils achieved something truly extraordinary with The Flaxmill — an awe-inspiring, on-site drama production performed inside The Dye House at The Flaxmill itself! This rare and unforgettable opportunity allowed pupils to step directly into history, performing where mill workers once lived and laboured.

The children wowed the audiences, English Heritage Staff and even the Mayor who came to watch!

Created and produced by Miss Armstrong, the production brought Shrewsbury’s industrial past vividly to life through powerful storytelling based on real historical records. Working in partnership with The Flaxmill Museum, pupils researched real people from the early 19th century, transforming their stories into moving performances that captivated audiences.

The children performed in the world’s first iron-framed building — forged with iron made in Coleham — made the experience even more meaningful, connecting place, history and performance in a truly remarkable way. We are incredibly proud of the pupils and deeply grateful to Miss Armstrong, Mrs Marghella and Mrs Porrett for creating such an unforgettable, confidence-building evening that will stay with them for years to come.

Year 6 heart dissection

This week, Year 6 had an unforgettable science lesson as part of their topic on the circulatory system. The highlight was watching Mr Larkham dissect a real heart and lungs!

Both classes gathered around as Mr. Larkham carefully demonstrated how the heart works, showing its chambers, valves, and blood vessels up close. Pupils were fascinated to see how this incredible organ pumps blood around the body. They were also able to see first-hand how important the lungs are in the circulatory system as this is where the oxygen that we breathe is absorbed into the blood stream

The children asked brilliant questions and made thoughtful observations, linking what they had already found out about the circulatory system in a previous lesson. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that brought science to life!

Thanks to Mr Larkham for taking time out of his day to do this dissection.

The Suitcase Storytellers

We were honoured to welcome The Suitcase Storytellers from Reachout Arts Company to our school for two truly wonderful Christmas performances.

Knowing this marks the company’s final show as they wrap up their journey together made the experience even more special.

Thank you, Suitcase Storytellers, for reminding us of the power of theatre to connect, inspire, and uplift. 🎭✨

Art Competition Winners for The Flaxmill Programme

KS2 pupils were invited to enter our art competition to design the front and back covers of our programme for Drama Club’s upcoming production of The Flaxmill, which will be performed on Friday for staff and pupils. There were lots of brilliant entries this year – everyone who entered will be awarded a Dojo for their hard work. All of the artwork has been photocopied and will be displayed in the foyer for visitors to see.

This year’s winner was…Charlie! His design will feature on the front cover of the programme. The four runners up, whose designs will feature on the back cover were…Renee, Hector , Matilda and Flo!
The programmes will be sold to parents and carers at the show at the Flaxmill tomorrow.

KS2 Christmas Performance 2025 ✨

Our KS2 children truly shone in their Christmas show, performing to four wonderful audiences.

A special mention must go to our Music Teacher Mrs Porrett and our Year 6 soloists, who delivered a beautiful and moving rendition of Once in Royal David’s City.

We are incredibly proud of every child involved – their teamwork and festive spirit made this Christmas celebration one to remember. 🎄🌟

Celebrating the Mayor’s Christmas Card winners 🏆

The Mayor of Shrewsbury recently faced one of the toughest decisions of the year — choosing winners for the annual Christmas Card Contest. With lots of entries from children across the town, the talent on display was remarkable and there were 2 Coleham winners in his Top Five🎨✨

Congratulations to Winner Chloe in Year 6 who shone brightly among all entrants. Her beautiful artwork of The Square at Christmas — complete with festive wreaths, sparkling trees, and Shrewsbury’s iconic loggerheads — captured the magic of our town. 🎄🌟 Her design wasn’t just a picture; it was a celebration of everything that makes Shrewsbury feel like home during the festive season. ❤️🏘️

The Mayor also recognised outstanding runners-up whose artwork stood out for its charm and originality which included ❄️ Freya  from Year 6 with a beautiful illustration.

Well Done to all the children who entered, keep participating and grasping those opportunities to share your talents.

Year 6 Trip to Liverpool war bunkers

Year 6 travelled to Liverpool as part of our WW2 history topic to visit Western Approaches Museum, which is a former WW2 bunker, where undercover missions were organised. The children saw the equipment code breakers would use and got to explore a street from WW2. They also learnt about rationing, different areas of the military and how Liverpool was impacted by The Blitz.

We then explored Liverpool Docks, which was a target for bombs during WW2 and had a quick look around the Museum of Liverpool. A great day was had by all!

🎄❤️ Rudolph Run Day – Supporting Severn Hospice! ❤️🎄

What a FUN day we’ve had! All 470 of us came together, antlers on and spirits high, to have fun while raising money for the amazing Severn Hospice. ❤️🦌

Incorporating a few of our favourite things singing, fitness and being kind!

Our organisers, Miss Lewis and Mr Hughes, had a fantastic line-up planned:

🎤 Whole-school assembly featuring Rudolph himself – Thanks to Nikki for talking to us about the special work of Severn Hospice!
💃 Zumba dance-up with Mrs Stewart and Rudolf– festive moves to get everyone ready to run!
🏃‍♂️ 30-minute Rudolph Run for each year group – so much enthusiasm and energy!
🏃‍♀️ Whole-school Rudolph Run – 470 runners all moving together for a brilliant cause!
🎶 Whole-school song for parents – finale to the day
🎨 House Antler Design Competition – creativity and colour everywhere!

Together, we ran an incredible 1,600 miles – that’s the distance from the Arctic Circle all the way to the North Pole! 🌍❄️🎅

Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we’ve already raised over £750 for Severn Hospice. We were delighted to welcome Nikki from Severn Hospice and of course Rudolph, who cheered us on throughout the day. 💛

A huge thank you to our pupils, staff, families, and supporters. What a joyful, active, meaningful way to celebrate the season! 🎄✨🧡

Year 6 Evacuee Day

This week, Year 6 were transported back to 1940 to experience a day in the life of a WW2 evacuee. Each child was given a character for the day with a different evacuation experience.

The children made gas mask boxes and created identity cards, which they had to keep with them all day. They were billeted and inspected by ‘Major Williams’ and interviewed other evacuees about their experiences.

In the afternoon, the children made mini Anderson shelters in groups. We were lucky enough to have real artifacts from WW2 brought in by children and parents.

Yr 6 Historians @ Longden Road Cemetery

Year 6 enjoyed a fascinating visit to Longden Road Cemetery, where they met with the Friends of Shrewsbury Cemetery for a special war graves workshop. Pupils took part in a trail filled with clues 🔍 that helped them learn about the lives of WW1 soldiers. One of the most memorable moments was discovering the grave of the youngest soldier buried there—just 16 years old.

The children also learnt that the war memorial headstones are made from Portland stone – the same material used to build Buckingham Palace 🏰. Using magnifiers, they were excited to spot tiny fossilised sea creatures 🐚 within the limestone.

A group explored the dedicated WW1 graves, which is beautifully cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission 🇬🇧. They did a symbol spotting exercise to identify the different regimental crests carved into the graves.

The visit helped to give some context around the WW1 novel Private Peaceful we are reading, where Tommo enlists underage.  It made us appreciate the incredible local resource right on our doorstep and the history we can glean from past lives🌿.

Thanks to Friends of Longden Cemetery for this lovely new partnership-we are learning so much!
