As part of this term’s geography curriculum on the changing landscape of Shrewsbury, we have arranged for Year 5 to visit Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings on Wednesday 8th July.

• Leopards will visit in the morning, leaving shortly after registration and returning at approximately 1:00pm. They will stop at the weir to eat their packed lunch.

• Lions will leave school at around 11:30am and return at approximately 2:30pm, stopping at the weir for a picnic lunch on the way to the Flaxmill.

Pupils should come to school wearing their full, smart Coleham PE kit, as Lions class has PE in the morning. As both classes will be walking to and from the venue, please ensure your child wears comfortable footwear (trainers are recommended) and brings a lightweight coat and/or sunhat, depending on the weather. No spending money is required.

Your child will need to bring a healthy packed lunch and plenty to drink. Pupils eligible for free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure.  The packed lunch will include a sandwich, piece of fruit, packet of crisps and cake.

There is no cost for this trip, as the visit to the Flaxmill is self-guided and entry is free.

You may already be aware that our Year 5 pupils have been taking part in this year’s Shropshire Bookfest—a nationally recognised reading initiative that offers excellent support to teachers and pupils in fostering a lifelong love of reading. As part of the programme, the children have read a shortlist of six books and voted for their favourite.

The initiative will conclude with The Big Book Awards Ceremony at Theatre Severn, where the winning author will be announced. We are delighted to share that we have arranged for our Year 5 pupils to attend this event.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday 21st April. We will leave school immediately after morning registration and walk to the theatre, arriving at approximately 9:30am. As the event is expected to finish around noon, we ask that your child bring in a packed lunch on the day. If the weather is suitable, we will stop for a picnic in the Quarry before returning to school. If the weather is inclement, we will eat when we arrive back at school.  Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure.  Packed lunches contain a sandwich, a packet of crisps, fruit and desert.

Please can you ensure that your child brings a lightweight coat with them in case of wet or unsettled weather during the walk to/from the theatre.

As part of this term’s science curriculum work on Space, we have arranged for Year 5 to visit Leicester’s National Space Centre on Wednesday 7^th January.

We will be leaving school at 7.30am prompt in order to get there at a reasonable time so ask that children arrive at 7.15am that morning. We expect to arrive back at school around 4.10 – 4.15pm. If we encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

On Monday 18th November, children in Years 1, 3 and 5 will be taking part in a Diwali-themed Indian dance workshop. This RE workshop is closely linked to the Hindu festival of Diwali, celebrated each year as the Festival of Lights.

During the session, pupils will have the opportunity to learn traditional dances associated with Diwali and explore the ancient story of Rama and Sita. The workshop promises to be a wonderful celebration of Hindu religion, tradition, and the rich cultural heritage of India.

To cover the cost of the workshop we are asking for a donation of £3.00 per child, to be paid via your child’s Arbor account. Many thanks.

Following on from the success of last year’s trip to The Palace of Westminster, we have arranged for this year’s Year 5 pupils to take part in a similar trip this year. They will be visiting The Palace of Westminster for a guided tour of The Houses of Parliament (“HP”) followed by a ride on The London Eye. This trip links to PSHE curriculum (democracy) and Geography (exploring a city that is not local).

We will be leaving school at 6.15am prompt on the morning of Thursday 16^th October in order to get there for the allotted tour time so ask that children arrive at 6.00am that morning. We expect to leave London around 4.00pm, after the ride on the London Eye,  and expect to arrive back at school around 9.00pm. Parents will be notified via email a more accurate return time during the journey home.

Your child will need to bring a breakfast bar, a packed lunch and a packed tea along with plenty of snacks and drinks – no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. They will need a rucksack to carry their food, their own personal water bottle AND a shop-bought disposable water bottle (personal water bottles are not permitted at Houses of Parliament due to security restrictions). Children should wear their school uniform and trainers/comfortable shoes for this trip and bring with them a light coat/waterproof jacket. No spending money is required.

Due to all bags being scanned on the way into HP, please ensure there are no metal implements (knives in particular) in your child’s bag. Plastic/wooden cutlery or “sporks” are permitted, if cutlery is required to eat their food.

As part of this term’s studies on Ancient Greece, we have arranged for Year 5 to take part in an Ancient Greek workshop at school, run by Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery staff, on Monday 8^th September. The workshop will consist of handling Greek artefacts, learning about the different city states and civilisations and learning about the origins of the Olympics.

The cost of the workshop is £3.70 per child, payable via your child’s Arbor account as soon as possible please.

Our annual Music Showcase Concert will be on Wednesday 18th June at 6.00pm in the school hall.

The concert is open to all pupils who have instrumental lessons in and outside of school, from Year 2 upwards. It’s free to attend and is always a lovely opportunity to perform to a friendly and supportive audience.

As part of our religious education, we have arranged for Year 1, 3 and 5 pupils to take part in a Diwali Workshop at school on Monday 18^th November. The children will learn the origin and significance of India’s biggest and most important festival of the year, Diwali (also known as The Festival of Light), and how it is celebrated by Hindus. The workshop will include the children singing, dancing and dressing up in traditional Indian clothing.
