Show and Tell by Rob Biddulph

Mrs Stennett’s picture book recommendation:

This book is a favourite for me both at home and in the classroom. Illustrator Rob Biddulph (who you might know from Draw with Rob) has cleverly taken the idea of a classroom Show and Tell and turned it into a funny and chaotic picture book with a brilliant message of how the simple things are often the most special. Come and ask to borrow it if you haven’t already tried it.

Adiós: a Spanish farewell 🇪🇸

At the weekend, TJ from Leopards class is leaving for a new life in Spain. He is a wonderful member of our school community and will be remembered for both his Rubik’s cube and moonwalking skills!

Today, year 5 (along with TJ’s parents) held a Spanish fiesta to celebrate his wonderful 6 years at Coleham.

A treat for Year 5

On Wednesday, year 5 were due to walk to the the Flaxmill, however due to the rising temperature it was deemed unsuitable to walk that far in the afternoon heat.

Not to fear though, as plans changed to visit the Dingle (another aspect of their geography work this term) and even played a game of rounders with Mr Halford, some football with Mr Hughes and sketching in the shade with Mrs Stennett alongside a picnic lunch!

Everyone had a great time, especially the teachers who dusted off their rounders skills and didn’t get at all competitive…

School Production – timings

Good morning,

Thank you for your patience in waiting for this information. Now that we have done our Saturday rehearsal, I am able to give your more details about dropping off and picking up times on the days of the show.

Each show will begin at 6:30pm. Therefore, we will need children to be dropped off at 6pm so that they can get into their costumes. Children must only bring a bottle of water with them. No snacks will be needed and if we see children with sweets we will keep hold of them until the end of the show.

If your child is at After School Club, we can make sure that they have eaten well before the show starts and will keep them with us if you require. Please let Miss Nash know if this is the case.

The show will last approximately two hours. Factoring a break into these timings (as well as getting changed afterwards) if you are not in the building watching the show, please collect your child at 8:45pm. Please be patient with us if we over run as it is very hard to be exact with these things. If after the dress rehearsals tomorrow we think it will be significantly different then I will let you know. If you are in the building watching the show, then we will bring the children to you in the foyer once they are changed.

Finally, if anyone would like to donate any cakes or biscuits for the interval of the shows – either homemade or shop bought – we would be very grateful. These can be left at the office anytime this week.

School Production 2026 – Important Information for Cast

Dear Parents and Carers,

SCHOOL PRODUCTION CAST & CREW

We are very excited to share that tickets for our school production will be released tomorrow. As we have over 90 children involved, we kindly ask that each family member purchases tickets for only one performance and for immediate family. This will help ensure that all parents/carers have the opportunity to attend and watch their children. Our hall capacity for audiences is limited so we will need you to purchase tickets early as last minute tickets can not be guaranteed. Please remember that all pupils will be watching the show in school time too.

We have released a first batch of tickets. We don’t want anyone to miss out so we will review ticket sales on Thursday 12th March. We will let you know if families are able to purchase additional tickets.

We are also hoping to record the dress rehearsal and make this available for parents to watch. More details on this will follow.

Chaperone Support Needed

To ensure that the production runs smoothly and safely for all children, we are looking for parent volunteers to help backstage as chaperones. This support is absolutely essential.

If you are able to help, please contact Mrs Stennett and let her know which performance night you are available for.

Reminder: All-Day Rehearsal – 14th March

A reminder that our full-day rehearsal will take place on:

Saturday 14th March, 8:45am–3:00pm (ready to start at 9am)

Children will need to bring:

A packed lunch
A water bottle
One electronic device (not a phone), with any camera functions taped over

Year 5 experience a satellite 🛰️

We are so lucky to have so many parents with out-of-this-world, really cool jobs!

Today, Harriet’s dad came to show us a real life satellite and talked to us about what they are used for and how they get into space.

It is always great to be able to experience out topics in real contexts and we would like to say a huge thank you to Paul for giving up his time and sharing his expertise with us. 🚀 🌙 🛰️

School Production Announcement

Rehearsals for this year’s school production have started this week. Our enthusiastic cast are already working hard on their scripts, songs and dances. Mrs Stennett and her team are delighted to have auditioned EIGHTY-TWO children across years five and six and WOW what talent we have discovered.

This year’s production is an original play based on our favourite fairy tales, written by Mrs Stennett, in order to make sure all children have a chance to SHINE! 🌟

Tickets will be on sale later in the year. We can’t wait to share it with you.

An Out of This World Trip for Year 5

Last week, year 5 went to Leicester Space Centre to supplement their Space Race learning.
Whilst there they experienced a trip around the solar system in the planetarium and learnt all about the history of space travel. They saw a piece of the moon, a scale model of the lunar module and even a real life rocket!

Year 5 write Tales with a Twist

For their first writing project of the year, year 5 have been writing traditional tales with a twist, with the aim of sharing these with their year 2 reading buddies.

From Three Little Unicorns instead of Three Little Pigs, and the Cactus Seed Man instead of the Gingerbread Man, their stories are amazing. Year 2 could recognise what had inspired the stories they listened to and gave some really lovely feedback.

Ancient Greek Workshop with SM&AG

A huge thank you as always to the wonderful Ali at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery for helping introduce out first history topic of the year – the Ancient Greeks – with an immersive in school workshop.

We looked at different artefacts, learnt all about the origins of the Olympic Games, and decided which of the city states we’d have preferred to have lived in.

We spent the rest of our day researching what Greek hoplites from the different city states would have looked like and what they would have worn, recreating them as huge pieces of artwork.

Year 5 test their waterproof longboats

For our final project of the year, we created Viking longships out of card. How are they so waterproof? Well, that’s a secret that only year 5 can find out next year!

A Woodland Treat 🔥

Year 5 visit the Flaxmill

Year 5 showed all of our school values on their visit to the Flaxmill this week. They persevered by walking over 40 minutes there and back. They showed respect to the tour guides and exhibitions they saw. Co-operation was demonstrated during the building activities and they have been described as a “credit” to us all. Well done, year 5! We are so lucky to have such a special, historical building on our doorstep (almost…) and it was fascinating to hear how it has been used in such different ways over time. Did you know that the iron frame that was created to support the building was made right here in Coleham?! The iron forge was located behind the Coleham Deli.

Artbytes National Competition: Ben represents Coleham

Ben from Leopards class was selected to showcase his artwork at a presentation even in Walsall yesterday. His wonderful hand drawing of our school pet, Albus, at Christmas time was celebrated and he came away with a certificate of achievement. Well done to Freya and Fionn who were also recognised as runners up!

Year 5’s Viking Day 🛡️

Year 5 embraced Viking Day with incredible spirit and enthusiasm! They made shields and jewellery in the morning and declared their fantastic battle cries and played Kubb (Viking chess) in the afternoon. It was a day to remember!

Year 5 create Audiobooks

Year 5 have been writing dual narrative stories. This means that the author has written alternating paragraphs from both characters’ points of view: the hunter and the hunted!

We then put our stories through an AI app to generate an image of our story and read them aloud to create audiobooks for you to listen to.

Owls and Leopards Buddy PE

Each week, Leopards and Owls come together to share in some buddy reading. Today, as an end-of-half-term treat, we came together to play bench ball. Year 5 taught year 2 the rules and played in mixed teams. It was great fun and we have all started half term with a big smile!

Information for the Cast of Peter Pan

Dear parents/carers,

If you are receiving this letter, your child took part in an incredible audition process for the school production of Peter Pan and you should be very proud of them.

This week they have been told what part they have been given in the show. For now, you do not need to do anything. Rehearsals will take place at lunchtimes and the children know where the rota is to see when they are needed. It is essential that the children take responsibility for this, turning up to rehearsals and learning their lines. Persistent failure to attend rehearsals may mean they lose their place in the show.

The performance will take place on the 13^th and 14^th March in the evening. When tickets become available, you will be the first to know. I will need all cast members to attend a full day rehearsal on Saturday 8^th March, 9am – 3pm. I am giving you this date now so that you can put it in your calendar. All children need to attend so that we can run through the performance in full on the stage. If your child has a leading role and misses this day, it will make it very difficult for me to guarantee their part.

If you foresee any problems with dates, please let me know as soon as possible to roles can be reassigned where possible.

The multi-talented Miss Heap will be in charge of costumes and will let you know if you need to provide anything specific. Almost all costumes will be sourced by school.

Extra details will be sent out as and when they are needed.

E-Safety information for years 5 and 6

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week in class, all children in years 5 and 6 will be completing their next half termly e-safety session as part of our Computing curriculum. These planned sessions are supplemented throughout the year with continuous e-safety teaching that links with current topics/ needs of the children.

It was a busy day for Year 5 on Tuesday as, after their fun morning at Hickory’s they had a wonderful photography workshop with local photographers Andy and Joy. They taught the children about the history of cameras and allowed them to use their photography equipment to take spooky portraits of each other. We are so thankful for this amazing experience!

Year 5 Visit Hickory’s!

On Tuesday, Lions and Leopards walked to Hickory’s to experience what working in a restaurant is like. They learnt how to make milkshakes, decorate pancakes, what careers are available at the restaurant and practised their waiting skills! Dogs Trust Visit

Thank you to Alison from the Dogs Trust for coming to speak to us about the safest way to interact with our own dogs and dogs in the community.

We started with a whole school assembly followed by workshops for certain year groups. It was both fun and informative and the children have come away with lots of tips around how to behave around our four-legged friends.

Some of our amazing year sixes have used their initiative to start a Friendship Club!

They have invited different KS1 children to join then in organised games and today was a roaring success as they played netball, read stories and played other games with our year 2 children.
