P.E.

At Coleham our aim is to inspire every child to be passionate about Physical Education and Sport, while bringing PE to the heart of the school.  We believe that Physical Education and sport is for everyone! We aim to inspire pupils and staff so they enjoy PE, Sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle that continues throughout their lives.  Learning teamwork and communication from team sports are key skills for future careers.   PE is vital in its contribution to a child’s physical and emotional development and health and wellbeing.

Pupils take part in regular, high quality P.E lessons.  Outdoor PE lessons are led by specialist Sports Coach Mr Halford and Class Teachers teach movement/dance and gymnastics weekly.  We provide opportunities for the children to compete against themselves and others during PE lessons, building character and developing key values including fair play, respect, communication, collaboration, commitment, leadership and teamwork.

Pupils in Years 3 to 6 all complete a block of swimming and water safety lessons at the Quarry swimming pool.

Our Vision

Through PE, our children will:

  • be equipped with key physical and social skills that can be facilitated through PE and sport,
  • progress with confidence and competence in PE and sport, throughout their school journey and beyond,
  • understand key sporting values that can be applied positively in everyday life,
  • be inspired to live a healthy and active lifestyle into adulthood.

Our Approach To Sports Fixtures

We know that children LOVE representing their school and showcasing their talents in all varieties of sports.  We also know the benefits of children being out of their comfort zone; working with teammates; having a go and taking part in sport.

To that end, we are committed to ensuring that all children are able to represent Coleham School in sporting fixture.

It can, however, feel like our children are not selected as much as we would like, so we want to explain how the PE sports fixtures work within our school.

Our Aim:

  • To provide as many sporting fixtures as possible, which include fixtures, events and coaching sessions in school.  This can only happen with the dedication of Miss Lewis and Mr Halford, and other staff who are able to help, to go above and beyond, working many extra evenings voluntarily without extra pay.
  • To provide competitive events for those children who excel in sport.  This can mean that these children may get selected more often than others at competitive trophy events.  This is fair because some children show a particular aptitude for sport and should be competing at town and county level.
  • To provide friendly events focused on enjoyment so that there are opportunities for all children, regardless of ability, to improve their skills, boost their confidence and experience teamwork.  We owe it to every children to encourage a love of sport and fitness so they take this forwards into adulthood.
  • To provide for children eligible for Free School Meals.  As a school we work hard to provide extra opportunities for these families.  This is a key objective of all schools.
  • For ALL children in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 to take part in at least one sporting activity (fixture, event or coaching in school) during their school journey.
  • A commitment to our Year 6 children, so all children in Giraffes and Elephants participate in a fixture before they leave Coleham.

The PE Team carefully track all children in the school and their sporting fixtures so that we can be equitable with team allocations.  There will be some children picked more than others owing to particular skills, but we aim to not pick the same children all the time so that everyone can take part.

Participation Data for 2024-25

  • 1223 separate selections for events in-school and out of school
  • All children participated in a sporting event both in and out of school
  • 214 children selected to represent a school team at least once
  • 117 children selected to represent a school team more than once

The majority of those school teams are in KS2 as there are not as many opportunities locally for KS1 teams.

We aim to foster character, a good sporting attitude and leadership skills within the children so we can celebrate the successes of others and be resilient when matches or decisions don’t go our way.  If your child has not been selected, please be assured that their time will come.  During their time in KS2 and especially Year 6, every child is guaranteed at least one fixture, sporting event and/or coaching opportunity.

Our sporting teams represent the whole school, and as such, we want them to represent our values and our ethos to the rest of the wider community.  We have high expectations of behaviour and sporting attitude: helping each other; respecting themselves, each other and their opponents; to share victories together and to share in defeat together, both in a gracious and calm manner.  We call this the THE COLEHAM WAY.

Celebrating PE and Sport

We develop strong relationships and competitive links with local partnerships and community sporting organisations, providing children access to develop and pursue sports and activities beyond school and promoting sports facilities in our community to the children.  Coleham School joined up with Shrewsbury Junior Park Run in a Takeover Event to promote the free, family fitness event and it was a great turnout, we ended up being the biggest Junior Parkrun event in the country!  This year we celebrated The Olympics and had not one but three Olympians visit us for a sporty show stopping week!

For our school wellbeing and fitness we encourage all staff to act as sporting role models and we love nothing more than coming together to give it our best effort!  Check out our whole school line dancing in the rain!

We start the school day off with an active 10 minutes at our Daily Dash for children and parents.  There is a wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs on offer with at least 5 active sports clubs being run each week.  We ensure that as many children as possible have the chance to participate in clubs and school fixtures.  We enter a large number of School Games events and Sporting Fixtures each term and achieved the School Games Platinum Award for our commitment to this.  We always share and celebrate our successes however they occur.

We want to inspire all children to have a go at new sports and enthuse them with national sporting events, House competitions, inspirational athletes and sporting challenges where the whole community can join in.

One of our favourite challenges promoted cycling to our school community with a range of cycling events across the week including bikeability sessions, smoothie bike event, a visit from the Rickshaws and Cycle Hub’s ‘bike kitchen’ culminating in our Tour de Coleham Challenge on Saturday.  Here the whole school rode laps of the school field to cycle the length of England from Berwick to Lands End.  We smashed it! raising lots of money for The Ukraine and all coming together to achieve the unthinkable.
