Geography inspires curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. At Coleham Primary School Geography prepares our children with the knowledge, skills and understanding to make sense of their world. It encourages a wonder for the world that they live in and asks them to question problems which face our environment.
Children gain knowledge about the big wide world, including continents and countries, we learn about famous explorers and their expeditions. We want to develop the children’s geographical vocabulary and use a range of geographical sources to develop pupils skills of organisation, communication and representation.
Our Vision
Through Geography, our children will:
- have a good locational knowledge – know where they live in the world and have the skills to find other places on a map,
- have a good sense of place – can talk about different places in the world expressing how they are similar and how they are different,
- understand physical and human geography – can identify human and physical features in their own and other environments,
- ask and answer enquiry questions about the local area and the wider world,
- understand how to use atlases, maps and plans effectively – can read maps and create their own maps using symbols
- understand the challenges our planet faces and identify ways which we can help to protect it.

Meet our Subject Leader
Mrs Morgan leads Geography across the school and hold a BA Ed in Geography. She is passionate about helping children explore the world, understand different places and cultures, and develop the skills to investigate both human and physical environments.
Teaching Assistant Mrs Weatherhead is passionate about sustainability and leads our Eco Council.
Celebrating Geography
At Coleham School we take advantage of our extensive grounds and unique riverside location so that children appreciate local features such as the River Severn and Rea Brook Valley Nature Reserve. Our pupils have been fascinated by local flooding issues affecting Coleham and rallied around residents and local businesses to lend their support. We work with The Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Inside Out Learning to provide extra-curricular clubs that inspire a love for nature and being in the outdoors .
The children are passionate about caring for our local environment working with Councillors on local greenspace projects and we are committed to introducing children to sustainable development issues and implementing sustainable practices within everyday school life. Our School Eco Council is very active and were thrilled to achieve the Eco Schools Green Flag award. Year 4 wrote some persuasive letters to save the Severn. They were so good they were invited to visit Parliament and meet MP Julia Buckley.
Our Year 5 children learn about the effects of fast fashion and promote more ethical choices at our Eco Fashion Show.
A highlight for this year was celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday! Showing our children how a single person can make a difference. We joined forces with Shropshire Wildlife Trust to all make individual Green Pledges, took part in eco activities and culminated in a community performance of The Earth Song. An off topic day where all the subjects come to life, Geography, Science, Computing, Art and Music.
