Music

At Coleham School, we aim to provide a high-quality and inclusive music education which engages and inspires children to develop a life-long love of music, giving children the tools and memorable experiences to understand music’s place in the world and engage in the joy of making it. Music allows children to develop other skills and attributes such as regulating emotions, improving language capabilities and hand-eye coordination, listening, memory & concentration skills, it inspires creativity and instils perseverance, teamwork and self-confidence.

We aim to make music an enjoyable learning experience. Singing lies at the heart of music teaching and coming together as a school community during assemblies is an important part of school life.

Children and staff have access to events that enrich, compliment and extend our teaching and learning.

Through music, our children will:

love music from different cultures, different periods and styles,
appreciate and understand high quality live and recorded music performances,
be creative through listening, composing, improvising, playing and performing,
have a sense of belonging and togetherness through making music, including singing,

Music Progression 2025-2026

Music is an important subject in our Creative Curriculum and so music lessons are taught by our specialist Music Teacher Mrs Porrett. Music lessons are lively and interactive. Bespoke planning is linked to class topics including Antarctica, Romans, Tudors, South America, Space and WW2.

We aim to give as many children as possible the chance to learn an instrument and so we have implemented a whole class tuition programme for three year groups: ukuleles for Y1, recorders for Y3 and percussion for Y5.

Celebrating Music

Beautiful singing fills our school and there are many special events small and large to participate in and showcase pupil’s musical talents. Mrs Porrett’s energy, expertise and passion for Music inspires us all and brings joy and positivity to any rainy day!

We have plenty of extra-curricular opportunities at our lunchtime and after school singing, dance and drama clubs. Music is very much loved and role modelled by our staff and we are lucky to have so many talented musicians and performers on our team including Mrs Porrett, Miss Featherston, Miss Cox and both Mr Williams.

We immerse the children in music as soon as they start school with visiting bands, musicians and visits to the theatre to see their favourite stories as musical theatre.

Rhythmsticks Music Club regularly hosts parent concerts and visiting musicians, Mr Williams choir sings to residents at Hazledine and Miss Armstrong’s Drama Club perform their mini production to us in Autumn with accompanying choir and musicians. More recently, they have performed their drama in historic Shrewsbury locations such as The Flaxmill Dye House and Library School Room.

Year 5 and 6 children perform in our School Production WOWING the audience and leaving us all rather emotional and very proud. It’s a massive creative effort from staff and children. Mrs Porrett’s weekly singing assemblies make us feel happy and are often used to rehearse for special school songs, community events and of course our Christmas Nativities.

Our Christmas Performance is for everyone and all 432 children sing in our nativities that take part in 7 shows across the week -the harmonies in church are always beautiful.

Not to be outdone, our staff record an annual Christmas video with vocals which is a popular event spreading joy to the community.

Year 1 and Year 3 pupils learn an instrument (the ukulele and recorder) and show off their skills at parent assemblies. We enjoy participating in local and national events such as Shropshire Sings, One Voices Choir and singing with the Shrewsbury Phoenix Choir and with so much music in school there are lots of concerts and community events where children showcase their musical talents to us all.

We love to sing to the diners at Hickories restaurant each Christmas time.

With all this going on, it’s no wonder we have achieved the Music Mark Award! We are very proud and wish to thank Mrs Porrett for all her hard work, passion and dedication to extra-curricular Music events.

Spreading music magic to the community at Christmas time

What began in the middle of Covid as a way to spread some Christmas cheer to our children and families has turned into one of our favourite traditions. We had so much fun creating that first Staff Christmas Song that we’ve kept it going — and now we can’t imagine the festive season without it.

Instrumental Lessons Information

We are pleased to work with Shropshire Music Service to offer small group and individual lessons for strings, brass, woodwind, drums/percussion, piano/keyboard, guitar, ukulele and singing. Most instruments can be started from Year 3, with some exceptions. The Music Service also offers affordable hire for most instruments if needed. Lessons take place in school, but pupils should be enrolled via the Music Service directly.

Shropshire Music Service is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing high quality, accessible music education for young people in Shropshire with lessons mainly being paid for by parents.

The County School of Music (CSM) is the collective name for Shropshire’s youth bands, orchestras and choirs. The following regular ensembles are open to all Music Service students at the appropriate stage in their learning:
