Design Technology

At Coleham Primary School, we consider our children to have limitless imagination and design and technology is a subject that helps children to develop their creativity and resilience in practical ways. Design and technology encourages children to be curious, responsible and reflective learners whilst solving problems both as individuals and as members of a team.

Our Vision

Through D&T, our children will :

  • become ambitious problem solvers, taking risks and persisting when challenges arise,
  • develop creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently,
  • have the confidence and skill set to participate in an increasingly technological world,
  • build and apply knowledge, understanding and skills to design and make prototypes and designs for a wide range of users,
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others,
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Progression Document

DT Progression 2025-26

We are committed to delivering a curriculum accessible to all which provides the broadest possible range of opportunities for children: one which will allow the children to become self-motivated and confident communicators.  Our main priority is for our children to be ambitious problem solvers who are not afraid of making mistakes with the confidence to ‘have a go’ and the resilience to persist with a project when challenges occur.  Children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers by building on their skills through taught sequences.

Through high-quality Design and Technology, we hope to instil problem-solving, creativity and ingenuity making an essential contribution to society.

Celebrating Design & Technology

In EYFS, children experience Design and Technology through child-initiated activities as part of their Expressive Arts and Design area of learning whilst in KS1 and KS2 children cover a variety of contexts such as cooking, mechanisms, textiles, construction and jewellery-making.

Our pupils really enjoy these team projects with popular ones being fairground rides, sewing Roman Purses and making Pop-Up books.  Our Bridges project links to our local area and children explore the Greyfriars, Kingsland, Porthill and Welsh Bridges in the Quarry Park to make notes and observations for their own structures.

Local Independent Schools have helped us to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) activities as the interleaving of these is important for future career opportunities for our children.  We aim to explore this further through our careers education.  We run a variety of extra-curricular clubs that give children the chance to try out basic wood work, sewing and cookery skills.  Our Caterers Academy help us deliver cookery education in school via events and Junior Chefs club.
