Sports Leaders

Mr Halford has been taking Year 6 through their Sports Leader Training. For todays session they had to independently run an invasion game with Year 1 pupils.  We saw some lovely interactions, teamwork and some coaching skills shining through!  Well done to Year 6 who have all achieved the Gold Playmaker Award with a small group of pupils achieving ‘Outsanding’ certificates.

Ex pupil returns

We were delighted to have a visit from former pupil Daphne Jones. Daphne came to talk to Year 6 about her passion for cycling and competing for Team GB.  She told the children that whilst she wasn’t a natural at first she has put in lots of hard work, determination and ambition to pursue her goals of becoming a professional cyclist. Thank you Daphne!

Yr 6 Liverpool War Museum

As part of Year 6’s history topic on the second war and Blitz in Britain the children visited an underground war bunker in Liverpool.  The children toured hidden rooms and glimpsed documents and tools the Forces used to monitor enemy convoys and inform the British government of their findings, whilst keeping their intelligence secret from the enemy.  We visited the operations room which has remained exactly how as it was left when the doors were closed on 15 August 1945!

Hatching Chicks

Charlotte in Year 6 kindly brought eggs and incubating equipment into school so her class could watch chicks hatch and look after them for the week.  Very egg-citing!

Careers Footballer vs Teacher

Giraffes Class were super inspired by their motivational talk from ex Shrewsbury Town Footballer Sam Aiston.  Headteacher Sam showcased how you need the same skills to be both a Footballer and a Teacher but impressed on the children how Resilence is the key to success! The children talked about Financial Management and even gave Sam some tips for his Podcast business! Thanks to Sam for such an entertaining talk. Lots of key messages for the children #resilience # positivity    # listening #ambition #teamwork #problemsolving

Yr 6 visit MRS JONES

Yr 6 visited MRS JONES ART SHOP & GALLERY for an Autumn Exhibition featuring local artists. We love our neighbour Mrs Jones as she aims to make art accessible to all and keeps her small gallery fresh with changing exhibitions.

Elephants Careers Trip

For Careers Week, we have arranged for Elephants Class to go out of school for a Careers Trip on Friday 20th October.  Elephants Class will visit Moneypenny call centre in Wrexham.

Moneypenny is an award winning workplace and will really inspire the children and get them thinking about future work places.  Moneypenny started in 2000 with a business idea to manage other businesses communications when owners were on holiday.  They are now a leading communications company with a 1000-strong team working from state-of-the-art headquarters in Wrexham.  We’ll be visiting their £15 million headquarters which was built with the staff ultimate wish list in mind.  Their business ethos centres around happy staff and so staff came up with some interesting design ideas including a giant Gorilla and a Treehouse meeting room.   We will have a personal tour from Hannah, a Q&A session and visit the staff ‘pub’ for lunch before we head back to school.

We will be leaving school around 9:20am and will return to school at approximately 1:30pm.  Your child should wear school uniform and bring their water bottle and a snack.  Moneypenny is kindly providing sandwiches for us all and so no packed lunch or school dinner is required.

The cost of the trip is £10.15.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, the school has no other means of funding these trips and the budget for resources and activities is very limited this year.  We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

National Poetry Day.

Today we celebrated National Poetry Day by welcoming local poet Michael Carding to Coleham. Michael started off the morning with an assembly for the KS2 children. Here he shared some of his poems which the children loved. After this he spent some time with Dolphins and Whales learning all about poetry.

Year 6 Trip to Secret War Tunnels, Liverpool War Museum

As part of this term’s curriculum work on World War II, we have arranged for Year 6 to visit the Western Approaches HQ’s secret war tunnels in Liverpool on Wednesday 25th October.   These secret tunnels were only re-discovered in recent years having been abandoned at the end of the war – a true time capsule for that significant time in our country’s history.

In order for us to arrive at the tunnels on time, we will be setting off from school earlier than usual. The coach will leave school at 8:00am prompt, so children need to arrive at school by 7.50am. We will leave Liverpool at 2:00pm, and expect to arrive back at school around 4.00pm. If we encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip – no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure. Please also ensure that they wear school uniform and have a lightweight coat with them. As the day will be packed with activities, there will be no time to visit the souvenir shop so no spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £24.15, which includes transport, workshops and insurance.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Yr 6 Librarians

Year 6 pupils have practised the art of filling out Job Applications for the School Librarian role.  Those pupils wanting to take part in Librarian duties during the year will help stamp and cover new book stock, tidy the library and promote new reading initiatives.

Here are our first Year 6 Libarians at work preparing new books for the library  📚 😃

Art Collaboration with BVAF

Have you seen the BT box on Greyfriars Road?  The Belle Vue Arts Festival painted it this weekend using traced images created by our Year 6 pupils.  This project has been a long time coming, the pupils created the original sketches back in Year 4.  They were tasked with creating nature images using the form of one continuous line ‘loopy lines’.

Well done to all involved for bringing art to our School Street! It looks fantastic👌

Thanks to Paintwell for donating supplies and the BVAF.

Look at the artistic journey below.

House Captain Elections

This week all the children in school met for their first House Meeting of the year to elect their House Captains for 2023-24.

Year 6 pupils wrote speeches in class and those that wanted too put themselves forward as candidates.  We are so proud of our new Year 6 pupils, their speeches were fantastic and it is a massive achievement to have the courage to speak in front of lots of people.

Well done to all our candidates!

Year 6 Leavers

Our Year 6 Class of 2023 is a special one and we will be sad to see them go but we know they are full of ambition and ready for the next chapter as young adults!

Our last day of school is always dedicated to them and our special assembly has seen them off in style.  They shared their dreams for the future and sang to us for the final time and we felt such joy and pride for the brilliant young people they have become.

Ms Jones popped in to award our Year 6 cups.

Year 6 @ Jump In

Year 6 celebrated the end of their Coleham Journey at Jump In and it was a chance to let their hair down, have fun and make some memories before they all head off in different directions to their new schools.  Even Mr Edwards loves Jump In!(especially the free socks!)

Staff vs Yr 6 Netball Match

As part of Ms Jones Celebration Day we watched a very competitive netball match between our Staff and our Yr 6 County Champions. It was close but staff pipped it by one goal. We are so proud of our 2023 Year 6 Leavers.

Yr 6 Leavers Assembly

We are SO incredibly proud of this wonderful group of Year 6’s and will miss them lots. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at their fantastic performance to Parents/Carers!  Even Mr Venn returned to see his first ever cohort who were very special to him.  We have a lot of love for this group of students who embody the Coleham values of Creativity, Friendship, Kindness and Ambition and we know they are ready to achieve in the next chapter of their lives. They are all so very talented and full of promise for fulfilled and happy lives.  Their new schools are very lucky to have them indeed.  #Ambition

Swimming -Giraffes

Girafffes have swimming lessons on a Tuesday afternoon. Due to the secondary school transition day this Tuesday we had to cancel the session on 4th July and instead we have booked another session for 18th July.

Thank you

Yr 5/6 Sports Day

Well done to all our Year 5 & 6 Sports Day competitors. Our last Sports Day for Year 6! The Sports Leaders did a great job at helping organise the event.  Severn scooped the House Cup, with Darwin coming 2nd, Greyfriars 3rd and Quarry 4th.  When we thought it was all over, staff stepped up for an impromptu three legged race.

Year 6 End of Year Party – Jump In Trampoline Park

Dear Parent/Carer,

We have arranged a party for our Year 6 Leavers to mark the end of their time with us – a momentous milestone in their growing up and moving on. Following the success of last year’s celebration at the Jump In Trampoline Park we have arranged for this year’s Year 6 to attend the same venue.

The children will be leaving school around 12.30pm on Thursday 20th July and travelling by coach to the trampoline park where they will have a one-hour session on the trampolines followed by a meal and a drink. They will return to school around 3.15pm, in time for their normal end of day release.

The cost of the event is £16.60 per child including transport, activity (and a pair of special trampolining  socks), pizza and a soft drink.  Payment should be made via your child’s ParentPay account by Monday 17th July please.  We hope that everyone can contribute to trips in some way. If you are concerned about making payment, please contact the office who can support with payment options.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

We very much hope the children will have an enjoyable and memorable afternoon at Jump In Trampoline Park.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Hilbert

Gallery Exhibition

We were thrilled to see Art from every year group in a real Art exhibition!  Coleham Art is displayed all week at the Belle Vue Arts Festival gallery at the Barnabas Centre in Coleham. The gallery features 50 local Artists plus the work of 420 Coleham School Artists in a range of media.  The children’s work was based on this years festival theme ‘Heroes’.  The whole school has visited the exhibition to view their work and were given guided tours by the Artists themselves, how special!  Even Batman turned up!  Thank you to Artists Sue Mann, Gisela Robinson, Clifford Hannah and Pete Fricker for showing us around.  It was really impressive and a lovely experience.

Bikeability Training

Year 6 have had Bikeability Training this week run by Shropshire Council. The pupils have learnt to cycle safely out in the local community.

Crucial Crew

Year 6 had a great time at Crucial Crew where they were faced with scenarios relating to keeping themselves safe. #firesafety #watersafety #knifecrime #electricity #fire safety #anti-social behaviour

Yr 6 stay away from home

Year 6 had a fabulous time at Pioneer Centre for their 2 night residential.  What an adventure and the perfect time to have some fun and re-connect after SATS week.  The children have participated in caving, climbing, high ropes, camp fire, aerial trek, raft building to name a few activities.  Brilliant ever lasting memories for this fantastic group of children!  We couldn’t be more proud of their achievements.

Year 6 Bikeability Cycle Training

Dear Parent/Carer

Our school is to receive Free Bikeability Level 1 & 2 Cycle Training which takes place on the following dates:

  • Giraffes – Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th June
  • Elephants: Thursday 8th and Friday 9th June

What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is the national cycle training programme supported and funded by the Department for Transport. The skills your child will learn will help boost confidence and independent thinking thus helping them to be a safer road user. Learning the rules of the road when young is a real boost to confidence and a very positive experience of true travel independence. So, whether your child cycles regularly or not, the course will prove beneficial. Shropshire’s Bikeability Scheme is delivered by Learn Cycling, a national training company who employ qualified, professional, DBS checked National Standard Instructors. Visit www.bikeability.org.uk for more information.

To take part, pupils will need Bikeability Get Ready!
A Roadworthy Cycle and a Cycle Helmet that fits securely. A roadworthy cycle has:

●      Inflated tyres (as hard as an apple)

●      Two working brakes

●      A well-oiled chain

●      A saddle and handlebars which are fixed on tight

We train in all weather conditions! On cold or wet days make sure pupils have coats and gloves.

Please scan the QR code below for more information on getting ready for your course
