Yr 6 Evacuation Day

Bringing history to life!  Our Evacuation Day has been a great success! Each child took on an evacuee’s identity for the day with different evacuation experiences – some good and some bad.  We began the day by making our gas mask boxes, name tags and identity cards. Then, Sergeant Major Williams checked we were all ready to be billeted to our host families.  In the afternoon we had an air raid drill and made minute Anderson shelters.

The children took on their characters with great wartime gusto and we hope the day highlighted the experiences that children their age went through in WW2.  History is a great subject for evoking empathy which helps pupils connect with the past and develop insights into not only the individuals, but also the political, economic, and social realities of the day.

Year 6 Residential Trip – 2nd to 4th June 2025

We are very excited to announce that we have organised a residential trip for our Year 6 pupils for June 2025 at The Pioneer Centre, Cleobury Mortimer.  Children will leave school on the morning of Monday 2nd  June (the first day after the May half term break) and return in time for normal end of day collection time on Wednesday 4th June.

We are great advocates of the benefits a residential trip can give to those pupils who attend. These include:

  • team building skills, co-operation and respect (through a series of safe but challenging activities);
  • developing greater independence;
  • learning new skills and taking part in new and enriching experiences;
  • discovering more about themselves and their capabilities and becoming more motivated as individuals; and
  • (last but not least) having fun!

The Pioneer Centre is a relatively new purpose-built activity venue, with excellent modern facilities, designed to meet the diverse needs of both staff and children alike, and we have stayed there on a number of occasions now. Each occasion has been very successful and, as such, we plan to take our Year 6 pupils there again in the Summer term.

The centre provides a “home from home” atmosphere and offers a wide range of exciting activities, with experienced and qualified staff on hand at all times. To find out more about the Centre’s facilities and to see a plan of the site, please visit their website at  https://activity-centres.naycacuk.co.uk/pioneer-centre/

The cost of the excursion is £245.00 per child, including transport, food, accommodation, supervised activities and equipment. We recognise that this is a large sum of money so have broken it down into four instalments of £61.25. We would be grateful if you could pay the first instalment by 31st December, sooner if possible, and the remainder of the trip balance by Wednesday 30th April 2025. Of course, if you wish to pay this sooner that would also be appreciated.

If you are worried about making full payment by the given deadline, please do come and talk to me or contact the office: we can extend the payment schedule to give you more time to cover the cost.

If your child is worried about any aspect of the residential trip, please do not worry as class teachers have plenty of time to prepare the children.

This trip will be an amazing, once in a life-time, experience for our pupils and we hope very much that all our Year 6 pupils will attend. If, however, your child WILL NOT be attending the trip, please do let the class teacher know as soon as possible.

Liverpool War Tunnels

Year 6 attended Western Approaches Museum, Liverpool, following their learning around World War 2.  What a cool place to visit, its set in the restored former Second World War command centre and consists of of re-opened rooms housing artefacts from when the command centre was in active use.

The children explored a former WW2 bunker and explored how people worked during WW2. They decoded messages in Morse Code and looked at the equipment used to identify enemy planes and ships. Year 6 also learnt about different aspects of the air force, military and navy, as well as life for evacuees and civilians living during WW2.  This really has brought our learning to life!  Now we all ready and excited for our Evacuee Day in school!

Year 6 Careers Week!

For Careers Week, year 6 pupils had a visit from Korrey, who restores classic super cars for his job. Korrey talked about the different aspects of his job, the skills he needs and his path into his career. Year 6 asked lots of questions about the cars and got to look at different tools and parts of engines for Ferraris and Lamborghinis!

Elephants also had a visit from The Sugar Cart Cakes! The children loved hearing about how the business started and how it has grown over several years. Year 6 learnt about the processes to make these wonderful cakes and the time involved. Their favourite part was definitely getting to sample some delicious cup cakes!

Year 6 are very grateful for the visitors sharing their time to talk about their careers.

KS2 House Singing Competition!

Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a singing competition today in their houses. After practising for the past few weeks, each house sang a verse of ‘Something just like this’, by Coldplay.

The competition was judged by Dr Brown from Shropshire Music Service. Dr Brown was really impressed with the enthusiasm, timing and musicality of all houses. It was a tricky decision but lifting the cup this time was Greyfriars! Congratulations!

Reception and years 1, 2 and 3 will compete after half term.

Friendship Club

Some of our amazing year sixes have used their initiative to start a Friendship Club!

They have invited different KS1 children to join then in organised games and today was a roaring success as they played netball, read stories and played other games with our year 2 children.

What super role models!

Year 6 Trip to Secret War Tunnels, Liverpool War Museum

As part of this term’s curriculum work on World War II, we have arranged for Year 6 to visit the Western Approaches HQ’s secret war tunnels in Liverpool on Wednesday 16th October.   These secret tunnels were only re-discovered in recent years having been abandoned at the end of the war – a true time capsule for that significant time in our country’s history.

In order for us to arrive at the tunnels on time, we will be setting off from school earlier than usual. The coach will leave school at 8:00am prompt, so children need to arrive at school by 7.50am. We will leave Liverpool at 2:00pm, and expect to arrive back at school around 4.00pm. If we encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip – no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure. Please also ensure that they wear school uniform and have a lightweight coat with them. As the day will be packed with activities, there will be no time to visit the souvenir shop so no spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £26.60, which includes transport, workshops and insurance.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

House Captains 2024-25!

We are thrilled to announce our new House Captains!

Many children across Darwin, Greyfriars, Quarry and Severn delivered speeches, explaining why they would be a fantastic House Captain, last week. The newly appointed House Captains are already working to arrange the first competition for the school year!

Well done to our new House Captains!

Year 6: Pupil Walking Home Alone

Parents of children in Year 6 may understandably wish to encourage independence prior to their child going to Secondary School and allow their child to travel (walk or cycle) home alone, or with a friend.

Please complete this form if this is the case.

This is for our information only. It is the parent’s responsibility to talk with their child and ensure their child understands the parent’s wishes regarding the end of the school day as to how they get home.  It is the parents responsibility to put in any place any safety measures they deem necessary to check their child has arrived home.

Pupils will independently leave school at the end of the day and we expect these older children to be responsible and walk straight home or wait to be collected in accordance with their parent’s instructions.

PLEASE NOTE ALL YEAR 6 PUPILS SHOULD BE COLLECTED FROM ALL AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS and CANNOT WALK HOME ALONE

The last Goodbye from Year 6

Our Year 6 Leavers 2024 have had a fabulous last day full of happiness, emotion and excitement just as it should be!

They have one final message for you

Goodbye Mr Edwards! Enjoy your retirement

PCSO Visit

Thank you to our local Police Constable Support Officer for speaking with Year 5 & 6 about the following issues: how being present at the scene of an incident without doing anything to stop it can mean that they can also be held to account and the use of social media, particularly messaging platforms and how that whatever is put onto it is traceable.  It’s a great time to prepare our children with safety messages before the Summer Holidays start and the children head to Secondary School or move up to Year 6.

Leavers Jump In!

Jumping into the last week of Primary School! A great Leavers party for our Leavers Cohort of 2024!  Well done to Sophia and Oliver for receiving the most Dojo points this year!

Year 6 Talent Videos

Here are the Year 6 pupil talent videos that didn’t make the Leavers assembly! But they are keen to show you and celebrate their filming efforts

Year 6 Leavers Assembly

Our Year 6 2024 cohort performed their Leavers assembly to their families and really made everyone so proud.  Pupils showcased their musical and dance talents individually and together and performed a variety of Leaver Songs unique to Coleham.  #tearjerker

It has been an absolute pleasure to watch you flourish and grow, take on challenges and responsibility, be ambitious and achieve, forge your passions and become successful, independent individuals ready for the the next chapter in your future.  Always take with you the Coleham values of Kindness, Respect, Resilience and Ambition.

Amazing credit to our Millie who rewrote the lyrics to these Barbie songs, organised the arrangement and produced this incredible Mash up!

Athlete Adrian Patrick leads Coleham Circuit Training

As a finale to our Olympics Week we were visited by a third medal winner!  Sprinter Adrian Patrick, a Commonwealth Games Gold winner for 4 x 400m relay led the whole school in circuit training.  These intensive 8 minute sessions saw the children do sit ups, press ups, squats and jumps which we all loved.  The perfect Friday morning work out! He talked to us in assembly about always remembering our vision and dream and not being distracted by behaviours that won’t lead us to our end goal.

What a week of incredible experiences.  Thank you to Miss Lewis for all her hard work and meticulous organisation.

Coleham shines with 2nd place finish at Shrewsbury Area Athletics 2024

An incredibly huge well done to every single child who took part in Area Athletics this evening. It was a huge success to watch you all compete and give it your all. I am so proud of you all for your dedication and team effort—you are truly incredible.
It was amazing to see so many of you take home medals and secure an outstanding 2nd place overall, competing against 12 other schools. Well done, Coleham! You should feel extremely proud of yourselves.
Congratulations once again on your remarkable achievement!

Olympics Showcase Song

Our Olympics Festival Day was fantastic and we finished with a showcase song to parents.  Mrs Porrett led the children with ‘We are Shropshire’ and ‘Wavin Flag’.  There is nothing more powerful than when we come together to sing on mass.  Our Coleham Community all together! A lovely end to the day.

Olympics Festival

What a day!  Miss Lewis organised a day off curriculum for our own Olympics Festival.  It started with a whole school run to Paris, the equivalent of 435 miles.  For 20 minutes all the children and staff ran around the schools grounds and it was such fun!  500 happy faces walking, jogging, running to Paris with the music motivating us.

Out Festival contained sports stations entirely run by our year 6 cohort of Sports Leaders who were fantastic at explaining, demonstrating and encouraging the children.  The younger classes were buddied up with older classes working together which was really lovely to see. The children participated in long jump, high jump, relay hurdles, triple jump, an Olympics quiz, shot put before stopping for an outdoor picnic lunch.  In the afternoon the children played badminton, handball, discus, javelin, relay and we finally finished with a  showcase song to parents.  Phew!! What an action-packed day!  Now we are all ready to watch the Olympics starting on 26th July.

Year 5/6 Sports Day

Thank you to everyone for coming along to our Year 5/6 Sports Day! The last Sports Day for our Year 6 Leavers.  Lots of House spirit in the Coleham Athletics arena.  The House water race was a great chance to cool off! Darwin stormed ahead of the leader board to scoop the House Cup.  Well done to all the parents who braved the parent race.

Year 6 It’s Your Move transition session

Shrewsbury Youth For Christ Group came into school today to carry out their annual It’s Your Move transition session with our Year 6 pupils. It was a great session and the children had the opportunity to discuss how they are feeling about their move to secondary school and watch some films where Year 7 pupils share how the transition to secondary school was for them. They were  also presented with their own book packed full of information about secondary school and we would like to say a big thank you to Coleham Prayer Group for purchasing these.

Crucial Crew

Year 6 visited Shrewsbury Flaxmill for a Crucial Crew Safety Day. This included a variety of scenario workshops designed to keep teenagers safe including hazards such as fire, railways, farming, drugs and alcohol.

BVAF Barnabas Gallery

It’s been brilliant to see lots and lots of classes popping out this week and heading over to the Barnabas Centre Art Exhibition for the Belle Vue Arts Festival.  Every child has produced a  piece of art for the exhibition and Badgers and Foxes Art has been hung by the Greyfriars Bridge.  Not only do the children get to see their own work displayed but also work from other local artists.  Such a variety to see!  The Exhibition is open Saturday 10-4pm if you would like to see your child’s work.

Year 6 End of Year Party – Air Hop Trampoline Park

We have arranged a party for our Year 6 Leavers to mark the end of their time with us – a momentous milestone in their growing up and moving on. Following the success of previous years’ celebrations at the Trampoline Park in Harlescott we have arranged for this year’s Year 6 to attend the same venue.

The children will be leaving school around 12.30pm on Monday 15th July and travelling by coach to the trampoline park where they will have a one-hour session on the trampolines followed by a meal and a drink. They should be back in time for normal end of day collection time, depending on the traffic they encounter on their return journey.

The cost of the event is £17.40 per child including transport, activity (and a pair of special trampolining  socks), pizza and a soft drink.  Payment should be made via your child’s Arbor account by Wednesday 10th July please.  We hope that everyone can contribute to trips in some way. If you are concerned about making payment, please contact the office who can support with payment options.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

We very much hope the children will have an enjoyable and memorable afternoon at Air Hop Trampoline Park.

Year 6 Residential

What a great 3 days 🦒🐘 have had at the PGL Pioneer Centre. It was a whirlwind of activities, meals and finally sleep.  The children tried new things, embraced opportunities, trusted their teammates and made lasting Coleham memories. A big thank you goes to Mrs Morgan, Mr Edwards, Mrs Lord, Miss Dovey, Mrs Jeff and Mr Halford!
