VE Day Celebration

Today we enjoyed celebrating the 80 year anniversary of ‘Victory in Europe’ in true Coleham style.  The children visited our air raid shelter, enjoyed a celebratory outdoor lunch and made commemorative pates and hats.  Our 2 minutes silence honoured the soldiers and people of the past who all contributed to the war effort and a reminder of why peace and kindness are so important in the world we live in.   We finished off the day with a music concert from the pupils @ Shrewsbury School.  Thank you so much for performing such beautiful music in the sunshine.  A lovely end to a lovely day.  Thanks to Mrs Stewart for rallying our troops to make the day happen.

  • Elephants: Wednesday 21st May to Thursday 22nd May

What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is the national cycle training programme supported and funded by the Department for Transport. The skills your child will learn will help boost confidence and independent thinking thus helping them to be a safer road user. Learning the rules of the road when young is a real boost to confidence and a very positive experience of true travel independence. So, whether your child cycles regularly or not, the course will prove beneficial. Shropshire’s Bikeability Scheme is delivered by Learn Cycling, a national training company who employ qualified, professional, DBS checked National Standard Instructors. Please visit www.bikeability.org.uk for more information.

To take part, pupils will need Bikeability Get Ready!
A Roadworthy Cycle and a Cycle Helmet that fits securely. A roadworthy cycle has:

·         Inflated tyres,-as hard as an apple

·         Two working brakes

·         A well-oiled chain

·         A saddle and handlebars which are fixed on tight

We train in all weather conditions! On cold or wet days make sure pupils have coats and gloves.

Please click on the link below for more information on getting ready for your course

URL: https://bikeability.org.uk/bikeability-training/get-ready/

This course develops the cycling skills and confidence of children who can already cycle.

Author Event – Patrice Lawrence

Today we had a special visitor, Children’s author and MBE for children’s literature Patrice Lawrence.

She spoke openly about growing up in an Italian -Trinidadian household and that as a young girl she saw that families like hers weren’t represented in children’s books.  She told us about her wild imagination and the ideas that came from news stories for her latest book People Like Stars. Thank you so much to Booka Bookshop for organising this brilliant visit for us.

3) Useful revision resources

In the run up to the SATs, we will be using a range of resources, which you can also access at home:

As ever, thank you for your ongoing support.

International Day

We’ve all had fun for International Day learning Spanish with Senorita Jones, singing the Fiji Rugby song with Mrs Porrett, playing an international game in PE and learning about another country in class.  Thank you to the many family guests for joining us in the classroom and telling us about places you have lived or travelled-always fascinating and providing a window to our children of a life they might choose to live one day.

In Year 4 Olive’s dad, Dominic, taught us about Laternelaufen, or ‘lantern walking’, which children do on 11th November to celebrate St. Martin’s Day and his story.  See the video below.

International Food Market

We’ve been immersing ourselves in new languages and cultures throughout the day and after school it was time to try tasters from around the world at our International Food Market!

With each Year Group supporting a stall we had foods from Spain, Greece, India, Germany, USA, Italy and Poland and other countries.

Than you so much for coming along and encouraging your children to try new foods.  It was wonderful to see the cultural dishes made at home with love and little notes to go alongside.

French Subscription for all KS2 Children

REMINDER: We purchase a subscription to Language Nut so KS2 children can have fun practising their French at home.

Languagenut is a great website resource, to reinforce French vocabulary interactively.  It teaches vocabulary so that you can hear it being spoken. Then the learning is consolidated by language games. The games are brilliant, as the children are having so much fun, they don’t even realise how much language they are absorbing.

At Coleham School, every KS2 child has a subscription to this resource and it can be accessed from school or at home, on any type of device with internet.  Your child has already been given login details to Languagenut.   They should ask their Class Teacher if they need them re-issued.

Please support your child to spend at least 10 minutes on this each week as it will really improve their French.

Yr 5/6 Author Event – Patrice Lawrence

Dear Parents/Carers,

A local book shop has arranged an Author event for Year 5 and 6 taking place on Friday 7th February.

Patrice Lawrence MBE and writer in residence for Book Trust will be joining us to talk about being an author and her brand new book being published 30th January 2025!  So, its literally hot off the press.  How lucky are we!

Patrice Lawrence MBE is a British writer and journalist.  Her writing has won awards including the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Children and The Bookseller YA Book Prize. Patrice was born in Brighton and brought up in an Italian and Trinidad household. She worked for 20 years for charities supporting equality and social justice. These themes (along with a serious amount of music) inform her stories.

There will be an opportunity for a book signing in the school library.  If you would like to purchase a signed copy of People like Stars please purchase this via Arbor School Shop £9 by 31st January.  Please find a book synopsis is below.

People like Stars

A mystery and exploration of fractured families, long-buried secrets and the power of friendship, told with warmth and compassion.

12 year old Ayrton and his mum have recently moved back to the area they lived in when he was a baby – the area they fled after a local woman stole him away from Mum when she was out shopping, thankfully returning him after only a short time had passed.

Mum is suffocatingly over-protective of Ayrton, who just wants to be a normal boy. At his new school, he discovers that his new friend Stanley is linked to him in an astonishing way:
Stanley’s grandma was the woman who took Ayrton while his mum’s back was turned. She became estranged from her own family because of her actions and Stanley has never known her.

Together the boys decide to track down the grandma – now a famous artist with the Banksy-style pseudonym Vixen – but will Ayrton’s mother can get answers to the questions that torment her, and will Ayrton be able to live a more free life?

This promises to be a brilliant visit.

Kind regards,

Miss Othen

Sci-Fi Author Adventure – Jamie Russell

We had a real adventure this morning, Shropshire Author Jamie Russell talked to us about his Sci-Fi trilogy of books and how his love of video games as a boy inspired his reading.

Year 5 were looking for an exciting reason to write suspense stories and George came up with the goods!  Turning to Mrs Stennett he said I’m reading this great book and I know the author so lets send them to him to read! so they did! Today Jamie visited to deliver his personal feedback.  Thank you Jamie for reading them over the weekend and giving up your time for us.  #writingwithapurposeispowerful

We also had a fascinating morning at the author talk Jamie gave to Yr 5 & 6 looking at the connection between video games and reading!  We had never thought of the similarities before of immersing yourself in an imaginary world and progressing through the levels/chapters.

“Just like navigating a complex video game, reading requires you to actively engage with the world on the page, decoding details, following storylines, and making mental leaps to fully understand the narrative.”

Jamie showed us the 1980’s Space Invader and The Hobbit computer games and how reading the book finally gave him the clue to defeat the trolls in the game with the power of the sun.

Fun Fact: The main character in Jamie’s novels Casey Henderson was inspired by his daughter who was tired of boy characters getting all all the limelight.

When the aliens gatecrash an eSports tournament in a London shopping centre, everyone thinks they’ve come to take over Earth.

Only Casey realises the truth: the Red Eyes are abducting the world’s best gamers to fight in a distant, intergalactic war… whether they want to go or not!

Christmas Lunch

We all enjoyed our Christmas Lunch together!! Thank you to our Catering Team for all their hard work on this day and every day this year 🌟  They arrived in school this morning at 6.30am to start cooking and managed to serve a whopping 462 Christmas dinners to our staff and pupils here and also at Bowbrook Primary.  Well done, it was lovely!

KS2 Christmas Performance

What a lovely Christmas performance from ALL the KS2 Children.  It’s not easy to perform in 4 shows, to 4 different audiences across 3 days so well done to all the children for being at their best and bringing this lovely gift to their families.  It was a wonderful celebration of narrating, acting, dancing and singing.  A special mention to Year 6 as it is their last Coleham Christmas Performance.  Well done again to all the children and thank you to our families for supporting us.  It’s tiring performing in a run of sell out shows so the children deserve an extra special treat this weekend! Below is a short video of highlights!

Our Picture Book Wish List

Our writing and reading leads Mrs Stennett and Miss Harris have been working with a consultant and plan to introduce Picture Book Studies next year.  This will feature incredible books that help us become kind, empathetic, make us laugh, make us gasp and make us curious in the world in which we live.

We are on the look out for the following books and have set up an Amazon Wish List for these.  If you might like to purchase a Christmas gift for our classes then we would be incredibly grateful for your donations.

Books can be purchased via the link below which will be delivered direct to school.

Amazon Wish List

But don’t forget if you are kind enough to make a purchase, please leave us an Amazon note, so we know who the parcel is from! This way we can thank you and your children!

Year 6 Christingle Service at The Abbey

On Monday, year 6 made their own Christingles in school. Wendy, from Shrewsbury Abbey, kindly gave up her time to come in and explain the symbolism of the Christingle and also helped with the making of each one.

We later attended the Christingle service in The Abbey. It was a truly magical experience with children singing, saying prayers and finally lighting our Christingles.  It was a serene moment for us to come together with feelings of hope and joy.  Thank you Shrewsbury Abbey for lighting up our morning!

Thank you year 6 parents for your donations which will go to The Children’s Society.

Mr Larkham the Scientist

There is nothing Mr Larkham likes more than exploring animal bones and skulls but today it was organs! He dissected a sheep’s heart and lungs with Year 6 and it was great for them to see all of the vocabulary terms they have been learning in the flesh!  They pumped air into the lungs to show how they would work and connected straws through from the vena cava vein to the right atrium and ventricle, and then from the left ventricle to the aorta.  It was a fascinating science lesson that led to some excellent questions about looking after their heart and lung health.

Author Piers Torday visits us

Bestselling Children’s Author Piers Torday visited us today!  Piers wrote The Last Wild Collection and has won many literature awards.  Piers talked to Year 4, 5 and 6 about his new fantasy book Midnight Treasure. Set in a fantasy version of Transylvania and a kingdom of vampirs, an orphaned werwolf searches for a mysterious treasure.

Piers’ Dad left him the inspiration for Midnight Treasure.  During Lockdown Piers found a mysterious map of a fantasy land drawn by his dad —a wonderful world of knights, bears, forests, and lakes.  He had no idea what it was or when he drew it but it was the seed of a story which grew when Piers researched his family history in Transylvania (modern day Romania).

The story was also inspired by The Hobbit, the first book his Dad read to him and his brother and the book they took turns in reading to each other during his Dad’s final days.  This is such a great reminder of how special reading can be between families, stories can be timeless spanning generations and providing us with memories that we treasure!!

Thank you so much to Piers for inspiring Year 4, 5 and 6 and meeting the children for our book signing.
