Year 4 travelled back in time during their Roman trip to Chester

Year 4 had an incredible experience during their Roman trip to Chester’s Roman Deva! The day was filled with excitement as the children marched through the streets, learning all about life as Roman legionnaires.

Under the strict command of the Roman centurion, the children became legionnaires for the day. They practiced drills, including stabbing with foam gladiuses and forming the famous tortoise formation with their scutum’s!

The adventure continued as the children “sailed” from Roma to Deva, rowing in rhythm to a drum, before exploring the market with its unusual delicacies like dormice, milk-fattened slugs, and flamingo tongues! They visited the Roman bathhouse, learning about Roman hygiene, oil, and the notorious sponges on sticks.

The day ended with a virtual gladiator battle and a visit to the real-life amphitheatre ruins. It was a day full of fun, learning, and a deeper understanding of Roman history!

Year 4 Behind the Scenes Tour @ Theatre Severn

Year 4 students had the fantastic opportunity to visit Theatre Severn as part of Careers Week. The children were given an exclusive tour, exploring both behind the scenes and the stage itself. They learned about the wide range of jobs involved in running a theatre, discovering that it’s not just about performing.

The students were particularly fascinated by the technical aspects, including how the sound systems operate, the role of lighting, and how stage equipment is delivered and assembled. A big thank you to Theatre Severn for taking the time to offer this valuable experience to our children!

Year 4 celebrate Roman Day

Year 4 spent a whole day celebrating the Ancient Romans, dressed in their Roman finery. We made legionary shields and mini mosaics. In the afternoon, we practiced stage combat at the gladiator fighting pits, attacked and defended in our legionnaire training and worked as teams to take on the aqueduct challenge. Finally, we headed to the Coleham Colosseum to sing our Roman marching song then watched brave souls fight for the chance to gain the Empress’s mercy and their freedom.

Careers Week in Year 4

During Careers Week, Whales class welcomed Olive’s mum, a baker and cake decorator, and Luca’s dad, a recruitment manager for a home help company. Dolphins class enjoyed a visit from Fern’s mum, an occupational therapist, who shared insights into her work.

We are now looking forward to next week’s theatre trip, where they’ll get a behind-the-scenes tour as part of Careers Week. Thank you to all our guest speakers for inspiring us!

Thursday Night Dinner!

What a magical project to be part of!  Take 12 pupils, a bunch of surplus food and a whole lot of love and inspiration from Chef the Hungry Guy and what do you get?  A school restaurant with a community meal for 40 families and staff!  All in 75 minutes!

This group of children didn’t quite know what they were in for when they arrived at the school hall but they soon got busy prepping, cooking, laying up, cleaning down, waiting on their guests before finally sitting down to enjoy the Mexican feast they had prepared.  What a restaurant team! You should all be so proud.  Massive thanks to Ali , founder of Shrewsbury Food Hub and Steve aka the Hungry Guy.  We are loving this collaboration!  We have never seen children grow so much as individuals and a team as we have seen in the 75 minutes of Friday Night Dinner.

Andy Bell Photography

It was a busy day for Year 5 on Tuesday as, after their fun morning at Hickory’s they had a wonderful photography workshop with local photographers Andy and Joy. They taught the children about the history of cameras and allowed them to use their photography equipment to take spooky portraits of each other. We are so thankful for this amazing experience!

Year 4 Residential Trip to PGL Boreatton Park, Baschurch: 27th – 28th March 2025

Dear Parents/Carers,

At Coleham we are always looking for ways that we can make children’s education more exciting and interesting and also to provide a broad range of experiences for our children.  We have run a residential trip for year 4 pupils for a number of years now and it has always proved to be very successful.

The positive effect that a residential visit has on children is huge – children become more confident and independent; develop stronger, more cooperative and understanding relationships with their peers; and they learn to organise themselves away from. It also enhances the children’s experiences and the school curriculum.

This year we have chosen to take the children to PGL Boreatton Park. We will be leaving school at 8.20am on the morning of Thursday 27th March (children to be at school for 7:50am prompt please) and will return around 4.30 to 4.45pm on Friday 28th March.  Whilst there, they will take part in a variety of exciting team-building/ problem-solving activities appropriate for their age group/abilities.

The cost of the trip is £200.00 per child, including transport, accommodation, food, supervised activities, equipment and insurance. We recognise that this is a significant sum of money so have broken it down into four instalments of £50.00. We would be grateful if you could pay the first instalment by 30th November and the remainder of the trip balance by Friday 14th March 2025. The payments have been set up on Arbor and can be paid at your convenience any time from today’s date.

If you are worried about making full payment by the given deadline, please do come and talk to me or contact the office: we can extend the payment schedule to give you more time to cover the cost.

If your child is worried about any aspect of the residential trip, please do not worry as class teachers have plenty of time to prepare the children.

We will contact you again nearer the date of the trip to go over the finer details and address any outstanding queries you or your child may have.

This trip will be an amazing experience and we hope very much that all our Year 4 pupils will attend. If, however, your child WILL NOT be attending the trip, please do let the class teacher know as soon as possible.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Hilbert

KS2 House Singing Competition!

Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a singing competition today in their houses. After practising for the past few weeks, each house sang a verse of ‘Something just like this’, by Coldplay.

The competition was judged by Dr Brown from Shropshire Music Service. Dr Brown was really impressed with the enthusiasm, timing and musicality of all houses. It was a tricky decision but lifting the cup this time was Greyfriars! Congratulations!

Reception and years 1, 2 and 3 will compete after half term.

Year 4 Roman Day

As part of their topic on the Ancient Romans, each Year 4 class will be having an Ancient Roman Day on Tuesday 15th October.

The day will include lots of exciting activities linked to this theme. Please can your child bring an empty cereal box in too, as we will be doing some Roman-themed crafting on the day.
If possible, we would like the children to come to school dressed as a Roman: a centurion, an emperor, a ‘citizen of Rome’, a slave or a Roman god/goddess! Please do not feel you need to purchase dressing-up items for this event – a flat bed sheet can easily be turned into a toga; a large scrap of fabric or plain clothes and scarf as a slave tunic, a cardboard box and some tin foil into a centurion’s breastplate or shield.  Please see some inspiration below.
We will be going outside during the day so please ensure your child brings outdoor shoes and a coat.
We are really looking forward to being Romans for the day!
Yours sincerely,
Miss Armstrong & Miss Lewis

Year 4 Trip to Deva Roman Discovery Centre, Chester

To complement this term’s history curriculum work we have arranged for Year 4 to visit the Deva Roman Discovery Centre in Chester. Whilst there, they will attend a workshop on the Romans, learning all about their way of life, and be given a tour of Chester city by a “real-life” Roman soldier.

The visit will take place on Tuesday 22nd October, departing school at 8.30am and returning at 3.15pm, in time for normal collection. If we encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

Year 4’s DT pop-up book reading with EYFS

Year 4 enjoyed reading the pop-up books they made in DT to the EYFS children. The reception children were super respectful, and the Year 4s read their books brilliantly, allowing the younger children to explore the mechanisms. It was a wonderful experience for both groups!

Year 4’s Persuasive Letters to Save the Severn!

Year 4 are sick of the sewage dumping in the River Severn and decided to write persuasive letters to our new Shrewsbury MP, Julia Buckley. Athlete Adrian Patrick leads Coleham Circuit Training

As a finale to our Olympics Week we were visited by a third medal winner!  Sprinter Adrian Patrick, a Commonwealth Games Gold winner for 4 x 400m relay led the whole school in circuit training.  These intensive 8 minute sessions saw the children do sit ups, press ups, squats and jumps which we all loved.  The perfect Friday morning work out! He talked to us in assembly about always remembering our vision and dream and not being distracted by behaviours that won’t lead us to our end goal.

What a week of incredible experiences.  Thank you to Miss Lewis for all her hard work and meticulous organisation.

Coleham shines with 2nd place finish at Shrewsbury Area Athletics 2024

An incredibly huge well done to every single child who took part in Area Athletics this evening. It was a huge success to watch you all compete and give it your all. I am so proud of you all for your dedication and team effort—you are truly incredible.
It was amazing to see so many of you take home medals and secure an outstanding 2nd place overall, competing against 12 other schools. Well done, Coleham! You should feel extremely proud of yourselves.
Congratulations once again on your remarkable achievement!

Olympics Showcase Song

Our Olympics Festival Day was fantastic and we finished with a showcase song to parents.  Mrs Porrett led the children with ‘We are Shropshire’ and ‘Wavin Flag’.  There is nothing more powerful than when we come together to sing on mass.  Our Coleham Community all together! A lovely end to the day.

Beth Tweddle visits

Olympic Gymnast Beth Tweddle visited us for our Olympics Week!  What a fantastic day! In a whole school assembly she talked about her gymnastics journey from age 7 to winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in London 2012.  She told us about the importance of fitness and healthy eating and the amazing team around her that contributed to British Gymnastics success.  Year 3 and 4 were lucky enough to have a gymnastics session with Beth before every pupil in school went to collect a signed photograph to take home! An incredible day of memories and all to inspire the children ready for the Paris 2024 Olympics! Beth is flying out to Paris in a few weeks to cover the gymnastics events.

Olympics Festival

What a day!  Miss Lewis organised a day off curriculum for our own Olympics Festival.  It started with a whole school run to Paris, the equivalent of 435 miles.  For 20 minutes all the children and staff ran around the schools grounds and it was such fun!  500 happy faces walking, jogging, running to Paris with the music motivating us.

Out Festival contained sports stations entirely run by our year 6 cohort of Sports Leaders who were fantastic at explaining, demonstrating and encouraging the children.  The younger classes were buddied up with older classes working together which was really lovely to see. The children participated in long jump, high jump, relay hurdles, triple jump, an Olympics quiz, shot put before stopping for an outdoor picnic lunch.  In the afternoon the children played badminton, handball, discus, javelin, relay and we finally finished with a  showcase song to parents.  Phew!! What an action-packed day!  Now we are all ready to watch the Olympics starting on 26th July.

Yr 4 Green Screen History Videos

As part of their English learning on playscripts and History learning on the Tudors, Year 4 wrote, directed and performed their own Horrible Histories sitcoms to inform and entertain, with a live audience, using green screen. The idea was that a modern child swaps lives with a Tudor family, creating some comedy moments. What an achievement!

Year 3/4 Sports Day

Year 3/4 Sports Day was a FANTASTIC EVENT! We had the perfect weather, great House Spirit and most importantly everybody enjoyed it!  Thank you to our families for your support.

This year’s winning place was tied between Severn and Darwin with 196 points.  Quarry came 2nd with 206 points and Greyfriars third with 233 points.

Well done to Miss Lewis and Mr Halford for all their hard work.
