Dear Parents/Carers,

Please find a list of events that your child will be participating in with Mrs Porrett and Coleham Voices Choir.

Tuesday 2nd December – Hickory’s Smokehouse Restaurant

We will rehearse after school and then walk to Hickory’s restaurant. We will sing from 5pm in the bar area. Our singing slot will be approx. 25mins.   You are most welcome to come along and support us if you can.  (Families have previously had a drink in the bar or stayed behind afterwards for a meal) We will hand over your child to you or another adult collecting at around 5.30pm. Children should wear school uniform but Christmas hats/accessories are fine!  We will assume that all children not collected from school on that day will be coming along to Hickory’s with Mrs Porrett and school staff.

Wednesday 3^rd December – Community Carol Singing in the school hall 

This will be straight after the school day at 3.30pm in the school hall and parents, families and staff are invited to join us to sing Christmas songs together.  Refreshments will be on sale (cash)

We will sing three sets of Christmas carols and songs until about 4.30 pm.

Thursday 11th December – Drama Performance Dress Rehearsal @ The Flaxmill

Coleham Voices choir club will be singing in Miss Armstrong’s Drama Club performance.  On Thursday 11^th December, we will be travelling via coach at 3:45pm to Shrewsbury Flaxmill for the dress rehearsal of our production The Flaxmill. To cover the cost of transportation, we are asking for a donation of £3.00 per child, to be paid via your child’s Arbor account. Your child is welcome to bring a snack. After the rehearsal, your child needs to be collected from Shrewsbury Flaxmill at 5:30pm.

We will be rehearsing and performing in the Dye House, an out-building with no central heating. Therefore, your child must wrap up warmly with a coat, additional layers under their clothes and with a hat and gloves.

Friday 12th December – Performance at St. Alkmund’s Church

We have been invited to take part in a prestigious Christmas concert at St. Alkmund’s in town with Shrewsbury’s Phoenix Singers.  This is always a very special concert and this year; as well as having our own slot, we will be singing two songs with the brilliant Phoenix Singers! Your child will need to be dropped off at St Alkmunds Church at 4.50pm for a rehearsal with the choir. The concert starts at 6pm and will last about an hour. The children need to be in smart school uniform.

You are welcome to stay for the concert or collect afterwards. Phoenix Singers are generously inviting all families to attend for free! (Donations appreciated towards venue hire).

Thursday 18th December – Drama Performance Live Show @ The Flaxmill

Coleham Voices choir club will be participating in Miss Armstrong’s Drama club performance. This live performance will take place in the Dye House of Shrewsbury Flaxmill. Please drop off your child at 5pm, ready for the start time of 5:30pm. The show’s duration is approx. 1 hour and will finish at 6:30pm.

Tickets to the performance are limited to x2 tickets per pupil.  (See separate Flaxmill letter)

What to wear?

• Choir Club pupils should arrive wearing their uniform and their school shoes.
• All pupils should also wear warm layers underneath and a coat to keep them warm.

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are writing to ask for nominations for the role of parent local governor on our Local Governing Body (LGB).

The role of the LGB

The school’s LGB is responsible for providing confident and strategic leadership, and creating robust accountability, oversight and assurance for the school’s educational and financial performance. The LGB is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

The role of a parent local governor

As a parent local governor, you’ll work with the LGB to ensure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in ensuring that the LGB is connected with, and is aware of the views of, parents and the local community.

To be a parent local governor you should have:

• A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children.
• Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
• The specific skills required to ensure the governing board delivers effective governance.

Being a parent local governor can be demanding but very rewarding.  All local governors serve a three-year term of office and under usual circumstances, can expect to spend between 10 and 20 days a year on governance duties.  These include:

• attending meetings of the LGB, usually outside of school hours and contributing to LGB business;
• reading reports and papers and keeping up to date on the progress that the school is making; and
• visiting the school from time to time during the school day.

You will have to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and sign the local governors’ Code of Conduct.  A copy of the Code of Conduct, Role Description can be found on LGB’s pages of the school’s website.

We have a supportive induction process which will enable a period of settling into the role.

How to apply

If you’re interested in applying for the role, please email the School Business Manager, Tracy Othen by email by 10am Monday 24th November (tracy.othen@col.318education.co.uk).

You should also include a personal statement (approximate 250 words) to support your application.  We encourage candidates to be succinct when setting out the skills, experience and attributes that they can bring to the LGB to support their application. Nominations of other parents will be accepted, but please seek their prior consent.

Applications/nominations can only be accepted from parents or carers who have children registered at the school on the day that nominations close. If we receive more applications/nominations than there are vacancies, an election will be carried out. We will inform you after the nomination deadline if we have to do this.
