Parent Carer Council Letter -parents of children with SEND

FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & DISABILITIES

Invitation to Meeting

Dear Parent/Carer,

Thank-you to those who were able to attend our previous PINS (Partnership for inclusion of Neurodiversity In Schools) meeting hosted by PACC (Parent Carer Council) and for making me feel welcome in your school. It has been great to meet so many parent carers and listen to your feedback which I have then been able to share with the school.

I have arranged a further Parent Carer Participation Group meeting for the Spring term for you to put into your diaries.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday 25th February from 2-3pm

I will send an agenda to school nearer the time.

For those who were unable to attend the previous meeting, we still encourage you to join us for the following ones. The input of parent carer experience and views are a vital element of the PINS project. Input from Parent Carers will help improve support for children with additional needs within your school, alongside the training package being offered to school staff.

The Parent Carer Participation Group is for all parent carers of children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND); no diagnosis or EHCP is required.

We will hold termly meetings in order to:

  • Work co-operatively with the school
  • Ensure that parent carers have their voices heard by the school
  • Bring parent carers together to share experiences
  • Introducing a closed Facebook Group, hosted by PACC specifically for Parent Carers at your school
  • Share information about wider support offers available to Shropshire SEND Families

Please try to join us and encourage other parent carers to come along too.

We look forward to seeing you.

If you have any further questions, please contact me at simone@paccshropshire.org.uk or info@paccshropshire.org.uk

Yours sincerely,

Simone Goward

Short Story House Competition!

The House Captains announced the latest competition in assembly today.

In the run up to World Book Day, the next House Competition is for the children to write their own short story. The story can be any fiction genre, such as adventure, sci-fi etc.

It must be 250 words or less if you are Year 2 or above and can have an image or a front cover design. For EYFS and Year 1, the children can create a story map or story mountain with their ideas and images.

Pupils can create these at home, in free time at school or in Elephants class on Thursday lunchtimes. The deadline is Friday 14th February (the last day of half term). We are hoping to get some authors to help us judge the winners!

We would like the stories to be put together and showcased in the library and as many children as possible to take part to try and win points for their House.

Entries need to be handed to Miss Featherston with the child’s full name, class and house on please.

Good luck to everyone!

Message from our PE Co-ordinator

We would like to get into good health & safety habits with the children regarding PE lessons and Sporting Fixtures.

So we’ve spoken to the children about the following:

  • No watches or Jewellery (earrings can be taped up if they cannot be removed)
  • Hair tied back with a hair bobble

Secondary schools are strict about no jewellery as part of their uniform policy so it will also help prepare our children for this transition.

French Subscription for all KS2 Children

REMINDER: We purchase a subscription to Language Nut so KS2 children can have fun practising their French at home.

Languagenut is a great website resource, to reinforce French vocabulary interactively.  It teaches vocabulary so that you can hear it being spoken. Then the learning is consolidated by language games. The games are brilliant, as the children are having so much fun, they don’t even realise how much language they are absorbing.

At Coleham School, every KS2 child has a subscription to this resource and it can be accessed from school or at home, on any type of device with internet.  Your child has already been given login details to Languagenut.   They should ask their Class Teacher if they need them re-issued.

Please support your child to spend at least 10 minutes on this each week as it will really improve their French.

Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch – comprising a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a cake/cookie and a piece of fruit – by our school meals provider before departure. Year 5 Trip to The Palace of Westminster & The Natural History Museum, London

Following on from their persuasive writing work Year 5 pupils did last academic year (where they wrote to Julia Buckley, the Labour MP for Shrewsbury, about pollution in the River Severn), the children have been invited to meet with Ms Buckley at The Palace of Westminster for a Q&A session and be given a guided tour of The Houses of Parliament (“HP”). Whilst they are in London, the children will also visit The Natural History Museum in South Kensington.

We will be leaving school at 6.15am prompt on the morning of Tuesday 11th February in order to get there for their first activity so ask that children arrive at 6.00am that morning. We will be leaving the museum at 5.15pm and expect to arrive back at school around 9.00pm – 9.30pm. Parents will be notified via email a more accurate return time during the journey home.

Your child will need to bring a breakfast bar, a packed lunch and a packed tea along with plenty of snacks and drinks – no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. They will need a rucksack to carry their food, their own personal water bottle AND a shop-bought disposable water bottle (personal water bottles are not permitted at Houses of Parliament due to security restrictions). Children should wear their school uniform and trainers/comfortable shoes for this trip and and bring with them a light coat/waterproof jacket. No spending money is required.

As they will be eating their lunch whilst at HP, please ensure there are no metal implements (knives in particular) in your child’s bag. Plastic/wooden cutlery or “sporks” are permitted, if cutlery is required to eat their food.

If your child suffers from travel sickness, please ensure they take a tablet in the morning just before coming into school, and provide one for the return journey (to be handed directly to the class teacher/Teaching Assistant in a named envelope).

The cost of the trip is £27.00 per child. Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

In case of an emergency or medical incident during the trip please can you check that your contact details are up-to-date on Arbor prior to the trip. Thank you for your assistance.

Year 2 Credit for cancelled Liverpool Trip – Update

Dear Parents/Carers,
Following today’s email regarding the forthcoming Year 2 trip to Wood Lane, we have received a number of queries from parents asking whether the cost of the trip includes the outstanding £10.00 credit for the cancelled Liverpool trip (for those that paid for the trip only) – £14.00 already having been reimbursed against the trip to Enginuity. The credit from the cancelled trip is to be part-funded by a credit note from the coach company booked to provide the transport to Liverpool, Lakeside Coaches. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide the transport for the trip to Wood Lane. We are planning another trip for later this term, to The Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, with Lakeside Coaches providing the transport, and will therefore credit parents the remaining £10.00 then. Details about the Birmingham trip will follow later in the term.
I hope this clarifies the situation regarding the financing of the trip to Wood Lane and that you are able to bear with us regarding the remaining credit owing against the trip to Leicester.

Half Marathon – Year 1 to Year 6

We are pleased to announce that Coleham School will be taking part in the Shropshire Primary Schools’ Half Marathon again this year.  This event was very popular last year with our pupils with 150 taking part, ranging from Year 1 to Year 6.

This is a cumulative Half Marathon (13.1 miles) challenge. Over the course of the Spring term (starting after the February half-term), the children will complete the first 12 miles of the total distance. We intend on running each of these miles on a weekly basis, during break time. The children will then complete their final 1.1 miles at the West Mid Showground on Saturday 12th April 2025 from 9am (A letter with the finalised details will be sent out closer to the time.) Here they will get the full event experience, including race bibs, a fully marshalled route, music and a start and finish line gantry. As they cross the finish line wearing their Half Marathon T-shirt they will be presented with their Half Marathon medal.

It is important to explain that this event is not a running race: it will not be chip-timed, nor will there be prizes for the “fastest” children. It is an inclusive personal challenge where, over a period of time, we hope they will develop a desire to exercise regularly, with no pressure to compete, whilst at the same time completing something as challenging as a Half Marathon – a wonderful achievement for everyone involved.

To compete in this event there is an entrance fee of £12.40 for each child entered and you must be able to commit to bringing your child to the event at the West Mid Showground. Please note your child has to be prepared to run twice a week during breaktime from Monday 24th February to Friday 11th April, so it is quite a commitment. This event is open to all our pupils in Year 1 to Year 6.  If you would like your child to take part then please make the payment via Arbor.

The event deadline is Friday 14th February.  BUT in order for us to finalise numbers and start running our daily mile OUR deadline for entry is FRIDAY 7th FEBRUARY. Unfortunately, we will not be able to add any late entries after the 7th February as the distance will not be covered in time.

We are looking forward to being active and completing this challenge!
