Festival Art Gallery

We don’t just love visiting Art Galleries but exhibiting in them too!  Every child has produced work for the Belle Vue Arts Festival Art Exhibition at the Barnabas Centre and they all visited this week to proudly view their art on display interspersed with other local artists work.  We really are All Artists at Coleham School!  The gallery is open to the public all day Saturday 10-4pm and I’m sure the children would love to take their grown ups for a tour.

Year 4 Tudor Day

Dear Parents/ Carers

We are writing to inform you that Year 4 will be having a Tudor Day on Tuesday 10th June as part of the History curriculum on the Tudors. The day will include lots of exciting activities linked to this theme. Children should be dropped off and collected at the usual time and will also have lunch in school as normal. We would like the children to come to school dressed as Tudors: kings, queens, townspeople, servants, knights or famous figures like Shakespeare/ Christopher Columbus etc. We have attached some images to provide you with some costume examples – please don’t feel any pressure to buy anything new.

Kind Regards,

Miss Armstrong and Miss Lewis

Year 6 Bikeability Cycle Training May 2025

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our school is to receive Free Bikeability Level 1 & 2 Cycle Training which takes place on the following dates:

  • Giraffes: Monday 19th May to Tuesday 20th May
  • Elephants: Wednesday 21st May to Thursday 22nd May

What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is the national cycle training programme supported and funded by the Department for Transport. The skills your child will learn will help boost confidence and independent thinking thus helping them to be a safer road user. Learning the rules of the road when young is a real boost to confidence and a very positive experience of true travel independence. So, whether your child cycles regularly or not, the course will prove beneficial. Shropshire’s Bikeability Scheme is delivered by Learn Cycling, a national training company who employ qualified, professional, DBS checked National Standard Instructors. Please visit www.bikeability.org.uk for more information.

To take part, pupils will need Bikeability Get Ready!
A Roadworthy Cycle and a Cycle Helmet that fits securely. A roadworthy cycle has:

·         Inflated tyres,-as hard as an apple

·         Two working brakes

·         A well-oiled chain

·         A saddle and handlebars which are fixed on tight

We train in all weather conditions! On cold or wet days make sure pupils have coats and gloves.

Please click on the link below for more information on getting ready for your course

URL: https://bikeability.org.uk/bikeability-training/get-ready/

This course develops the cycling skills and confidence of children who can already cycle.

To sign up for the Bikeability training taking place at Coleham School please click HERE below by no later than Monday 12th May:

We will email you to confirm your child’s place by close of play on Wednesday 14th May.

Kind regards,

The School Office

Year 4 Residential Trip to Boreatton Park: 27-28 March

In preparation for the impending trip to PGL Boreatton Park, we will be spending some time over the next week or so going through PGL arrangements with the children.  We thought that you also would appreciate a bit of additional information and clarification to help you prepare your child.

Packing & Preparation

  • CLEARLY NAME ALL CLOTHING AND PROPERTY!
  • If possible, choose a soft hold-all rather than a rigid case as this makes storage in the dorms easier and gives the children more space. Please DO NOT WORRY if this is not possible!
  • Please allow your children to be as involved in the packing of their bag as possible, this will help them to be more aware of what they have and where it is – it will also help them when packing for the return home.
  • Ensure your child has plenty of layers as it gets cold on site.

Please see next post for the Kit List.

Medication

We will not be taking medications from school, so please send in any meds your child needs, including inhalers, in a container with their name written clearly on the front along with clear instructions and dosage. Please let us know some time prior to our visit if your child will be bringing medication so that we can ensure we have all the necessary information on the day of departure.

Thursday morning departure arrangements

The coach will be leaving school at 8.20am prompt to ensure we arrive at the venue for 9.00am. Children will therefore need to be at school for 8.00am please.

Friday afternoon return arrangements

  • We will be leaving PGL Boreatton Park at 4.00pm and expect to arrive back at school around 4.30pm, depending on the Friday afternoon traffic. We will phone ahead if delayed for any reason.
  • PLEASE WAIT OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL GATES UNTIL ALL BAGS HAVE BEEN UNLOADED – you will be able to greet your children before collecting bags.
  • Be aware that your child’s wellies/wet clothes bag may have become separated from their main bag – please ensure you collect ALL your child’s belongings.

Finally, a reminder that any outstanding payments for this trip should be settled by Friday 14th March (unless you have already contacted the school to arrange an extension to the payment schedule).

Hopefully, this information will help avoid any last minute worries or queries.  Your cooperation in these matters will be greatly appreciated and will contribute to the smooth running of the trip.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Miss Armstrong & Miss Lewis

Pupils will be leaving school at 8.50am for a prompt 9.00am start and will return around 10:30am.

Year 4 Event- Pentabus Theatre Company Production of Gwendol: A Giant Problem

Our Year 4 pupils have been selected to take part in an exciting opportunity to work with a number of schools to put on a theatre production with Pentabus Theatre Company. Pentabus is a rural touring theatre.  Drawing on 50 years’ experience of producing new theatre and working creatively with schools, Pentabus is running a story-telling and performing arts project for KS2 pupils in the county that explores and celebrates local folk tales and Shropshire’s natural environment.

During February and March 2025, pupils are taking part in four drama, music or dance workshops, facilitated by professional artists, to create their own original performance based on the Shropshire folktale of Gwendol, the Wrekin giant.  Pupils will then perform their work on stage at Ludlow Assembly Rooms on Tuesday 18th March 2025. This performance will feature narration and storytelling by award-winning poet and performer Henry Maddicott and professional actor Jacoba Williams.

HOW PARENTS/CARERS CAN BOOK TICKETS

On Tuesday 18th March, children involved will perform twice at Ludlow Assembly Rooms to ensure as many parents/carers and friends can attend as possible. Performances are at 4.30pm and 6.00pm, with an approximate running time of 45 – 50 minutes. Tickets are available to book online at the cost of £6 (adults) and £4 (under 12s).

Book tickets HERE:

We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment as there is limited capacity at Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE REHEARSAL

On Tuesday 18th March, children will be transported by coach and will arrive at Ludlow Assembly Rooms at 10.30am. After the final performance, the children will return to school via the coach provided, arriving back around 8.00pm. To avoid any confusion at the end of the event, parents should collect their children from school and NOT from the Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Food and drinks:

Please ensure that your child has a bottle of water, a healthy packed lunch and an afternoon snack box to sustain them throughout the day, from 10.30am – 7.00pm. It is worth packing large/hearty portions as the children will be using up a lot of energy during rehearsals and the shows, and refreshments will not be provided by Pentabus. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch (sandwich, packet of crisps, piece of fruit and a flapjack/shortbread) by our school meals provider before departure, but we are unable to provide any supplementary snacks. If your child would prefer a packed lunch from home, please let the teacher know so that our caterers will provide only the meals required.

ATTENDING A SHOW

The venue address is:

Ludlow Assembly Rooms,  Market Square, Ludlow, SY8 1AZ

For travel and car parking guidance, visit: www.letsgoludlow.com/parking-in-ludlow

PHOTOGRAPHS & FILMING

We politely ask that audience members do not take photographs or film during the performance, as there are children involved who have not consented to photography or filming.

Pentabus are working with a professional film-maker to capture the children’s experience during the project, and this film will be circulated to all schools after the performance.

The cost of the trip is free as the transport costs are very generously being covered by the theatre company.

Please ensure your contact details are up-to-date on Arbor in case we need to contact you during the trip. Many thanks.

Year 2 Credit for cancelled Liverpool Trip – Update

Dear Parents/Carers,
Following today’s email regarding the forthcoming Year 2 trip to Wood Lane, we have received a number of queries from parents asking whether the cost of the trip includes the outstanding £10.00 credit for the cancelled Liverpool trip (for those that paid for the trip only) – £14.00 already having been reimbursed against the trip to Enginuity. The credit from the cancelled trip is to be part-funded by a credit note from the coach company booked to provide the transport to Liverpool, Lakeside Coaches. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide the transport for the trip to Wood Lane. We are planning another trip for later this term, to The Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, with Lakeside Coaches providing the transport, and will therefore credit parents the remaining £10.00 then. Details about the Birmingham trip will follow later in the term.
I hope this clarifies the situation regarding the financing of the trip to Wood Lane and that you are able to bear with us regarding the remaining credit owing against the trip to Leicester.

Chinese New Year Workshops for EYFS, Year 2 & Year 4

As part of our religious studies, we have arranged for our EYFS, Year 2 and Year 4 pupils to take part in a Chinese New Year Workshop at school on Wednesday 29th January. Each workshop, provided by Sounds Roadshows, will involve two 15 metre dragons, dragon and lion dancing and music-making on authentic Chinese musical instruments, immersing children in the colourful Chinese culture.

As we have no other way of funding this workshop we would be extremely grateful if parents could contribute £3.90 per child towards their cost. Payment is to be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the workshops please.

Leopards Theatre Trip to Prestfelde School – 22nd January

Leopards class have been invited to attend a performance by the Year 7 Theatre Company at Prestfelde School revolving around the theme of Bullying, which fits within the KS2 PHSE framework.

The cost of the trip is £3.30, payment for which should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip.

Year 4 Choral Experience Day at Moreton Hall -7th March

Our Year 4 pupils will be visiting Moreton Hall to take part in a Choral Experience Day on FRIDAY 7TH MARCH (this date has changed again from Tuesday 3rd to Friday 7th March))  It will be an amazing experience for all those taking part – an opportunity for budding choristers to develop their technique under the expert guidance of one of the UK’s renowned choral directors and Moreton Hall’s experienced Music Department.

Pupils will be leaving school at 8.45am prompt to ensure they arrive in time for the start of the event so we ask that children arrive at school for 8.30am that morning. We expect them to arrive back at school around 4.45pm. If they encounter any significant delay on our journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

A hot lunch and refreshments will be provided by Moreton Hall. Pupils should wear their normal school uniform for this event and bring their water bottle with them.

Parents are invited to attend Moreton Hall, Weston Rhyn, Oswestry for the end of day performance if you would like too. This will start around 3pm (aim to arrive around 2.45pm). The performance will take place in the Holroyd Theatre. SAT NAV: SY10 7SZ for where we will be registering, park and doing most of the Experience Day.  If you are doing this and wish to take your child home , seek out school staff after the performance.

The cost of the trip is £4.25, payment for which should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip.

Please ensure your contact details are up-to-date on Arbor in case we need to contact you during the trip.

Year 4 Trip to Hindu Temple, West Bromwich

Dear Parents/Carers,

As part of the school’s programme of teaching pupils about different places of worship, we have arranged for Year 4 to visit the Shree Krishna Mandir, a Hindu Temple in West Bromwich, to learn about the Hindu faith.   Whales will be visiting the temple on Tuesday 4th June and Dolphins on Thursday 6th June. In order for us to arrive at the venue for 9.30am both classes will need to come in to school by 7.45am on the day of their trip. The coach will depart at 8.00am sharp.

As we will not be returning until the latter end of the school’s lunch break it is likely the school’s lunchtime servery will have ended. Children should therefore bring in a packed lunch for this trip. No glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Pupils eligible for Free School Meals will be given a packed lunch on their return to school.

The cost for this trip is £15.30, which includes transport, insurance and a donation to Shree Krisha Mandir to cover their costs. Payment should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Year 6 Pioneer Trip – Final Reminders

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The SATs are now over and we just wanted to let you know that the children have worked incredibly hard to do their absolute best in each of the tests completed. We are very proud of the resilience and effort shown by everyone throughout the week.

As you know, the first week back after half term, we head to Pioneer for our two-night residential; everybody is excited and it feels perfectly timed after SATs.

Here is some final information so that you and your child can feel prepared on the morning of Monday 3rd June:

Packing

Please use the kit list to help with packing. Do aim to let your child be as involved as possible in this process; it is important for your child to know what is in their bag as this will allow them to be as independent as possible during the stay.

Don’t forget to pack a water bottle and reading book – these may be useful to have in a smaller bag which can be kept with your child on the bus.

Remember not to pack mobile phones, electronic devices and extra snacks or sweets.

Medication

It is vital that we have the correct information about any medication that your child will require while we are away. With this in mind, we would like any medication to be given to an adult (Mrs Morgan, Mr Edwards or Mrs Jeff) on Monday morning. Please put any medication in a container with your child’s name written clearly on the front along with clear instructions and dosage.

If your child has any specific allergies please make sure we know about them.

If your child requires travel sickness tablets, please give them their tablet at home or send it into school for us to give before we head off. Remember to also include another tablet for the return journey so we can make sure they take it before we set off on Wednesday.

Other bits to remember

You will need to send your child to school with a packed lunch on Monday 3rd as our evening meal will be the first meal provided by Pioneer.

Please encourage your child to practise putting on a duvet cover and pillow case as that will be the first challenge set when we arrive.

The coach will leave school at approximately 10:15am on Monday morning.

We will return at approximately 3:30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

As ever, thank you for your ongoing support in preparing your child for the trip.

Best wishes,

Mrs Morgan, Mr Edwards and the year 6 team 😊

Class Mixing – Year R/Year 2/Year 4

Dear Parents/Carers,

At Coleham, we mix our classes at the end of EYFS, Year 2 and Year 4.  Soon, our staff will begin the process of organising the new classes for the next academic year and we want to let you know about the process and its benefits so that you are more informed and better able to support your child if they have any anxieties about the process.

Mixing the 2 classes widens our children’s social horizons, allowing them to make new realtionships with children they perhaps don’t know so well.  Eventually, all the children will be forced to make new relationships when they transition to secondary school, and we find that children from Coleham, and other schools that mix, fare better than others when this time comes.

Our experience tells us that many children have made new friendships after a class mix, whilst retaining and strengthening existing friendships.  Making these new relationships (including those between children’s families) helps to further grow and strengthen our school community.  In addition, there may be negative relationships between some children in-class that can be broken.

It is natural for your children to be wary about being in a ‘new’ class, however, please remember that your children already know all (or most) of the children in their year group.  For some, it can feel as if they are moving to a completely new class in a completely new school with new, unknown children, but this is not the case.  Any children in their current class who are mixed into a different class will still be there at playtimes, and they will remain with many of the children they are currently with, whatever the mix.

The process of mixing is not a light undertaking.  We know the children really well here at Coleham, and we have a good understanding of the relationships in and out of class.  When mixing classes, we do not rely on any one source of information, but instead use a combination of soures to ensure that the best mixes are arrived at.  To find the best mixes:

  • we consult the children in a child-friendly way over their preferences;
  • we make use of ‘sociograms’, where relationships are mapped out through survey data;
  • we work as a team to use our professional knowledge of relationships, both social and work-wise;
  • we will also consult parents.

I attach a link to an optional form where you can, confidentially, share any strong feelings you may have about the makeup of the mixed classes; the form is not compulsory.  Please be assured that we will seriously consider any parental recommendations or feelings, but cannot guarantee anything at this point.  We are most likely already fully aware of positive and negative relationships that your children have, but if you are concerned, I recommend you fill the form out.  If you choose to use the forms, please fill out one form per child.

EYFS Class Mixing Form

 YEAR 2 Mixing Form

 YEAR 4 Class Mixing Form

These forms will automatically close at 11:59 pm on Sunday 21st April.

Year 4 Ancient Rome Day

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of their topic on the Ancient Romans, Year 4 class will be having an Ancient Rome Day on Thursday 26th October.

The day will include lots of exciting activities linked to this theme. Please can your child bring an empty cereal box in too, as we will be doing some Roman-themed crafting on the day.

If possible, we would like the children to come to school dressed as a Roman, be it a Centurion, an Emperor, a “citizen of Rome”, a slave or a Roman God/Goddess! Please do not feel you need to purchase dressing-up items for this event: a flat bed sheet can easily be turned into a Toga; a large scrap of fabric or plain clothes and scarf as a slave tunic, a cardboard box and some tin foil into a Centurion’s Breastplate or shield.  Please see some inspiration below.

We will be going outside during the day so please ensure your child brings outdoor shoes and a coat.

We are really looking forward to being Romans for the day!

Yours sincerely,

Miss Armstrong & Miss Lewis

Yr 2 Museum Trip

Dear Parent/Carer,

Year 2 trip to Shrewsbury Museum

We have arranged for Year 2 to visit Shrewsbury Museum on Thursday 13th July to take part in a history/art workshop and to look at some of the museum’s many artefacts. We will leave school at 9.30am and return around 3.00pm.

As the children will be walking to and from the Museum, please ensure they wear comfortable footwear on the day of the trip and that they bring a coat and a bottle of water with them.

Pupils will also require a packed lunch for this trip. As Year 2 pupils are provided with free school meals as part of the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme, a packed lunch will be provided for all pupils. Please click on the link below to select from the various menu options available. All packed lunches come with a piece of fruit, cake and a packet of crisps. If we haven’t received a completed packed lunch form for your child by close of play, Wednesday 12th July, we will assume they will be bringing one from home.

Packed Lunch Order Form

The cost of the workshop is £3.80 per child, payment of which should be paid by your child’s ParentPay account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope everyone will contribute in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/Visits and Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information, or if you do not wish your son/daughter to participate in this trip or any of the stated activities so we can make alternative arrangements for them.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Hilbert

Mr Venn’s Farewell Event

Dear Parents/Carers,

Farewell Event for Mr Venn

As you all know Mr Venn will be leaving us at Easter to relocate to Devon.

We hope you can join us in a farewell run as Coleham School ‘Takes over’ Shrewsbury Junior Parkrun.

There is a Shrewsbury Junior Parkrun every Sunday morning at 9am in the quarry and Mr Venn and I often volunteer with our families.  It’s a 2km lap starting near the tennis courts and children aged 4-14 can take part for free and parents often run with their youngest children or cheer along the route.  We have arranged it with the organisers so that on the 26th March 2023 there will be a Coleham School Takeover event.

We would LOVE it if we could boost the profile of Junior Park Run within our Coleham School community, whilst at the same time celebrating everything Mr Venn has done for our school, children and their families.

We know lots of Coleham children already take part but wouldn’t it be AMAZINNG if we could all come together for Mr Venn’s last Shrewsbury Parkrun and smash the attendance figures for our local Parkrun.  It’s a fun way for the whole family to be active together.

If you can spare an hour of your Sunday morning on 26th MARCH at 9:00am to either volunteer as a marshall or just come along to cheer the children on, that would be fantastic!

Any child is able to run the course but it’s much better if you are able to register FOR FREE with Shrewsbury Junior Park Run via their website www.parkrun.org.uk/register.  This way your child will have a barcode which they hand in at the end which registers their run time on the Parkrun website and also tracks attendance numbers for Parkrun.

To volunteer you just need to sign up FOR FREE at www.parkrun.org.uk/register and email shrewsburyjuniors@parkrun.com with your barcode number to say you’d like to volunteer on the 26th  March (if you are already involved in Parkrun, this is your normal barcode). Volunteering just means standing in a high vis along the course and cheering the children on.

We hope to see lots of you there!

Kind regards,

M Stennett

Class Teacher

Headteacher’s Letter: 10th January

Dear Parents/Carers,

It was lovely to welcome the children back to school last week after the Christmas holiday.  Everyone is looking refreshed and ready for the term ahead.

We have a busy half term ahead with lots of activities planned.  On Friday, we will be hosting our first school disco since before Covid; we are really looking forward to this and hope that lots of children will be attending.  In addition, we are also organising a parents quiz night this half term (details to follow), which we hope you will support.

From a curriculum point of view, we have a number of trips planned including a Year 1 trip to Blists Hill, a Year 3 trip to Birmingham Sea Life Centre and a Year 4 trip to Engenuity as part of their Science topic.  Year 4 will also be going to Condover for a 1 night residential trip and Year 5 will be visiting the National Space Centre in Leicester as part of their Science and History work.  More details about all trips will follow in due course.

In addition, this term Mrs Stennett will be leading the School Production of Jungle Book.  Auditions for Years 5 & 6 have started this week (during lunch breaks) and the production itself will be just before Easter.  The whole school is also gearing up for our Francophone Day later this half term, organised by Madame Jones.  During our Francophone Day, the children will learn about the different countries where French is spoken.  We will also be celebrating the Chinese New Year at the beginning of February and we look forward to being able to share some images via Class Do Jo with you.

Staffing Update

This term, we have welcomed Miss Jones to teach in Whales class and we have also welcomed Mrs Mukhopadyhay to our support staff team, working across both Year 4 classes.

Attendance

We are working really hard to ensure that attendance and punctuality remains high across school.  Please remember that good attendance is crucial and that most minor aliments (e.g. a cold, tiredness) can be dealt with at school.  We regularly speak to the children about the importance of punctuality and good attendance even if we are not feeling 100%.  Please can I ask you to deliver the same message at home to your children and, if in doubt, please send your child to school and be assured that if they are unwell while at school, we will call you to collect them.  Please remember that your child must arrive in good time to enter school at 8:50 am for registration and the school gates will close at 8:55 am.  Thank you for your ongoing support.

Term Dates

The spring term is often a time when people look to book their annual holidays. If you are planning a trip this year, please do check our school’s website for our term dates to ensure that you are referencing the correct term dates: We set our own term dates and so Shropshire Council’s term dates do not always correspond with ours, particularly when it comes to PD Days. Also, please be aware that unless there are exceptional circumstances, holidays during term time cannot be authorised.

Class Assemblies

This term, we would like to invite all parents/carers into school to watch their child’s class assembly.  These assemblies will be a chance for your children to share with you the work they have been doing here at school.  They will last for approximately 20 minutes and will begin at 9:10am on your allocated day.  Please head into the hall via the front door straight after drop off on your allocated day:

Class Date of assembly
Year 1: Hedgehogs 31st January
Year 1: Squirrels 1st February
Year 2: Owls 7th February
Year 2: Rabbits 8th February
Year 3: Turtles 14th February
Year 3: Starfish 15th February
Year 4: Dolphins 7th March
Year 4: Whales 8th March
Year 5: Lions 14th March
Year 5: Leopards 15th March

We hope that you will be able to join us for these assemblies.

Finally, please remember that if you have any concerns or queries at all as the term progresses, do contact the school office.  Your child’s class teacher will usually be your first port of call but me or Mr Larkham are out on the playground most days, and are very happy to deal with any concerns you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Jones
