Poetry Pandas

We love Reading at Coleham! This week we are introducing Poetry Pandas, a new initiative for Year 1 families.

Children will bring home ‘Poetry Panda’ bags each week so they can share a love of poems and rhymes at home with their parents.

Our Poetry Pandas can support your children with phonics, speaking and listening skills, confidence in reading aloud or simply the joy of sharing a book with their loved ones.

Year 1 Phonics Screening check

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 1 Phonics Screening check

In June, all Year 1 children in England will take part in the phonics screening check. Within the screening check the children will be asked to read 40 words, some of which will be real words and some will be pseudo words. The children may also refer to pseudo words as ‘alien’ words. This screening check will take place on a 1:1 basis with either myself or Miss Cox. There is no time limit to the phonics screening check but it should take no longer than 10 minutes. The children are taught phonics daily and so preparation for this is already in place so please don’t worry about this.

Here is a link to phonics play PhonicsPlay – Resources (www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources) where you can play Dragons Den, Buried treasure and Picnic on Pluto without subscribing. These games focus on real and pseudo words and will be a good way to practise at home too. We will be sending a copy of the flashcards home by the end of the week. Please continue to read with your child daily – even if it is just for 5-10 minutes – and then write a comment in the diary. This is a perfect way for you to help your child develop their reading skills and continue their reading journey to becoming fluent readers.

Helpful hints when reading:

Explore the text – Talk about the front cover; read the title; make predictions; read the blurb; discuss the illustrations. Who is the author?

Phonics check – Open up the book; discuss any digraphs the book aims to practise. Are there any non-decodable words? Talk about their meaning if necessary.

Pre-read – Read the book to your child then have them read it with you. Talk about what you’ve read.

Your child’s turn – Have your child read the book aloud to you. Ensure they apply reading behaviours accurately. Encourage silent blending where possible. Encourage fluency and expression when appropriate. Make your child aware of punctuation; encourage them to use it to improve pace and fluency.

Comprehension – Ask questions about the text to ensure your child has understood what they have read. What and when questions are fine, but aim for open ended questions too such as: why do you think …? How would you….?

Quizzes – Sometimes there is a quiz at the end of the book. Or you could make up your own.

Follow up – Provide follow up activities suggested by the book that link to the themes and develop your child’s understanding.

Please do get in contact with us if you have any questions as we will be happy to help.

Kind regards

Mrs Young

KS1 and Reading Leader

Yr 1 @ Blists Hill

Year 1 headed off for a Victorian day out in Ironbridge, they explored the Victorian town and got involved in a candle dipping workshop.  They walked miles and enjoyed their historic day.

Yr 1 Victorian Workshop

In history, Year 1 had a visit from the Shrewsbury Museum who delivered a workshop on Victorian toys.  The children stepped back in time along the timeline, exploring different types of toys. They then set up their own museum and became experts and visitors on the Victorian toys.

Storyteller

Today EYFS and KS1 had a storytelling visit from Sal Tonge who brought her chatterbox and guitar with her to entertain us all.

She then delivered workshops to EYFS, Yr 1 and Yr 2., lots of singing, stories and communication.

World Book Day

We love WORLD BOOK DAY at COLEHAM.  Our Reading Leader Mrs Young started the morning by talking on the radio about all our activities in school.  If you want to listen click the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0f1k4wn

We’ve all had lots of fun dressing up as characters or in our comfy reading clothes.

Every class has visited our Pop-up Book Shop to select a World Book Day book to take home and lots of classes are popping out of school to GO EVERYWHERE AND READ.

Take a look at our brilliant costumes!

YEAR 1 TRIP – BLISTS HILL VICTORIAN TOWN MUSEUM

As part of this term’s cross-curriculum work we have arranged for Year 1 to visit Blists Hill Victorian Town Museum, Coalbrookdale on Wednesday 22nd March. We will be leaving school at 9.15am and returning approximately 3.00pm, in time for normal home time.

The cost for this trip is £12.60, which includes entrance fees, transport and insurance. Payment should be made via your child’s ParentPay prior to the date of the trip please.

As Year 1 pupils are provided with free school meals as part of the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme, a packed lunch will be provided for all pupils. Please click on the link below to select from the various menu options available. All packed lunches come with a piece of fruit. If we haven’t received a completed packed lunch form for your child by close of play, Monday 20th March, we will assume they will be bringing one from home.

Children should wear their school uniform and sensible walking shoes for this trip and, as Blists Hill is an open air museum and the majority of our time will be spent outdoors, bring along a waterproof coat for possible cold/inclement weather.  No spending money is required.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Each workshop, provided by Sounds Roadshows, will include activities such as lion and ribbon dancing and music making on authentic Chinese musical instruments, and will feature two fabulously colourful 15 metre dragons. Very exciting!

To mark the Chinese New Year, there will be a Special Menu on Thursday 2nd February

Panto Collection Arrangements for Tuesday

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope the children are looking forward to attending the Pantomime at Theatre Severn this Tuesday. Please note, children will be arriving back at school later than the typical school day. Therefore, collection arrangements on this day will differ slightly. Please can we ask that on this day children are collected at 5pm. As it is likely to be much darker at this time, please may we ask that you collect your child from the following areas:

EYFS pupils: KS2 nearest to the main school building
Year 1 pupils: KS1 playground via classroom doors
Owls: KS1 playground via classroom door
Rabbits: KS1 playground via door they enter in the morning

To avoid having to return to their classroom for their belongings after the pantomime, please can EYFS pupils leave their bookbags at home on this day.

Kind regards,

Miss Harris

Our EYFS and KS1 children sparkled at their Christmas Nativity. Well done, you were all incredible and performed 3 fantastic shows.  We are so very proud of you all.  A massive THANK YOU must go to Holy Trinity Church and Rev Fi for hosting us and allowing us to take-over the church for a week.  We are so thankful for your generosity and kindness.

Below are some rehearsal pics and video:

EYFS & KS1 Sports Day

The sun shined over Early Years for their first ever sports day.  What speedy running, egg and spooning and team work for the water race.  Lovely encouragement and spirit from the children!  Well done to Greyfriars for lifting the cup this year and being House winners for the 2022 EYFS/KS1 Sports Day.

Yr 1 Ukulele Concert

Year 1 children have been learning the Ukulele this year in their music lessons.  Our Music teacher, Mrs Porritt, led a brilliant fun and inspiring ukulele concert with our Year 1 classes this morning showing us their progress.

We thoroughly enjoyed performing and hope that parents enjoyed watching too!

Squirrels at Hodnet Hall

Year 1 had a lovely trip to Hodnet Hall Gardens, the children took part in 3 different activities, a guided tour around the gardens, potting a seed and creating a clay model using natural resources from around the gardens. The sun shone for us all day!

Balance Biking

Year 1 had a great time learning some bike basics in their balance bike training.

Well done year 1!

Yr 1 Historic Trip

This weeks trip to the Black Country museum was amazing and the children really enjoyed it. They were so well behaved and represented Coleham superbly. They looked around the old village and went inside the old school. Here we were treated to a lesson and had to learn the alphabet backwards! It was hard! The children had a play with the toys and understood the differences between old and new toys. We were also told about what is was like to live back in the older days.

Author Visit-Katie May Green

Another excellent talk from an author for our book week at Coleham. This time, it’s Katie May Green who wrote ‘Hide and Seek’ and ‘See and not Heard’.  Katie is also an Illustrator and helped Year 1 illustrate victorian portraits.
