All things SATS after school drop-in session

We are inviting parents to attend an informal drop-in session where we will be looking at a variety of SAT materials. The drop-in session will be on Thursday 26th February and we will be available from 3:20 pm until 5:00 pm to answer any questions you may have regarding the SATs. We are doing this prior to parents evening so that your appointment will be about your child’s learning rather than SATs information.

Year 6 SATs revision books

In response to the large number of requests from parents for SATs revision materials, the school has purchased a math, reading and GPS revision book for each child. Your child will be given these after half term and will have a schedule to complete the questions.  The schedule will be published on Dojo for reference each week and will run Friday to Friday. We would like you to support your child with the completion of this each week, along with daily reading and times table practise.

Useful revision resources

In the run up to the SATs, we will be using a range of resources, which you can also access at home:

Design Competition

The Living Streets company are holding a badge design competition that could see us winning a years’ worth of walk to school resources.

This year’s theme is Walk the Senses – they want the children to tell them what they see, hear, smell, taste or feel as they walk or wheel to school. That might be the sound of birds singing, the smell of flowers or a tasty snack eaten on the way to school. Or it could be the feel of raindrops or snow on their skin – or spotting a rainbow in the sky!

Your child may complete this in class or may come home with the template to have a go at home. (or a plain piece of paper will be fine too)

Entries to be with Class Teacher or Miss Melville by Friday 13th February.

Will we have some Coleham winners?

A Heartfelt Farewell to Mrs Caldwell

This evening, our staff room was filled with warmth, laughter, and more than a few happy tears as we gathered for a special afternoon tea in honour of a much‑loved member of our team, Mrs Caldwell who sadly leaves us today as she heads down south to join her family.

As we enjoyed tea, cake, and plenty of reminiscing, it quickly became clear just how much Mrs Caldwell means to all of us. Her dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to our pupils and wider school community makes her truly exceptional.

Although we are sad to see her go, we are incredibly grateful for everything she has contributed to our school. Her influence will be felt for years to come, not only in the progress the children have made but in the warmth and companionship among staff.

We wish Mrs Caldwell every success in the next chapter of her journey and hope she leaves knowing just how appreciated she is.

Year 4 Trip to Enginuity Centre, Coalbrookdale

As part of this term’s science curriculum work on electricity and DT work on mechanisms, we have arranged for Year 4 to visit the Enginuity Centre in Coalbrookdale on Tuesday 10th February. Whilst there, the children will take part in their Downhill Buggies and Jitterbugs workshops.

We will be setting off from school around 9.15am, and expect to arrive back at school around 3.00pm, in time for normal end-of-school-day collection.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip – no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure. Please also ensure that they wear school uniform and have a lightweight coat with them. As we have a packed itinery planned we will not be visiting the souvenir shop, so no additional spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £18.60, which includes entrance fees, workshops, transport and insurance.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip.

In case of an emergency or medical incident during the trip please can you check that your contact details are up-to-date on Arbor prior to the trip. Thank you for your assistance.

International Day – Tuesday 3rd February

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Tuesday 3rd February, we will be hosting our 2026 International Day and celebrating different countries and cultures around the world and diversity within our school community.

What will the day involve?

NON UNIFORM – It will be a non-uniform day. Your child is invited to come dressed in non uniform in the colours of any flag or cultural dress of their choice.  We do not expect you to buy a costume, you could wear a flag as a cape or get creative using face paints, decorate a plain t-shirt with felt tips or wear an international sports kit.

INTERNATIONAL DANCE WORKSHOPS – During the course of the day, KS2 pupils will be participating in workshops ranging from Aboriginal dance through to Russian and Brazilian dance.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES – In the afternoon the class teacher will have chosen a country for their pupils to learn about.  Your child might listen to music, speak the language, do some map work, learn some history or look at the day in the life of a child from that country.

LUNCHTIME – We will have a special theme menu on this day.

KS2 GERMAN LESSONS – I will be turning into Bavarian Bertha this week so instead of teaching French, I will be giving Years 3 to 6 a German taster session!

PARENT GUESTS – We would love to host parent visitors in the classroom so you and your child can share your experiences from a different culture, country or travels.  You might like to bring some photos, traditional clothes or objects to talk about.  Please chat to your child’s teacher at the end of the day or contact Mrs Jasper in the school office to arrange a visit.

Email: helen.jasper@col.318education.co.uk

INTERNATIONAL FOOD MARKET– We invite children to bring food from another country into school to share at our after school event. (Children can bring this into class in the morning or parents can bring to the event) We will set up tasting tables with each year group’s contributions and we invite you and your children to pop into the school hall after school once you have collected your children to sample some tasters.

This year we have invited some local restaurants to join us, to provide some menu tasters.  It is a hard time for the hospitality business and local independent restaurant owners so we hope to promote their businesses to you.

Please enter from the OUTSIDE HALL DOORS at the back of school from 3.15pm.  This was a really popular event last year with lots of children trying new foods!

Some guidance for the food event:

So we can easily display the food for the event we have allocated each Year Group the following countries:

EYFS-ITALY

Yr 1-GREECE

Yr 2 -NORTH OR SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES

Yr 3 -INDIA

Yr 4-SPAIN

Yr 5-POLAND

Yr 6-GERMANY

-We have allocated countries to keep things simple for purchasing/displaying food, of course if there is a cultural dish closer to your heart then your child is very welcome to bring that in too.  We encourage this, there were some really thoughtful dishes last year from family recipes that the children had made.

-Homemade and shop bought foods are welcome.  We would be very grateful if you can cut up your offering into small pieces for tasters to save us time.  Please label any special containers with your child’s name and class that you would like returned.

-At the event, please remember food is kindly donated by families so we are not able to confirm ingredients or allergens.  As it is an after school event, parents/carers are responsible for their children and what they are eating.  (If Year 6 children usually walk home alone then they are able to go to the hall without parents)

We will arrange some tasting platters for After School Club to sample.

-Staff will display the food, on year group tables and be on hand to help you with tasters. Pop in and have a mingle and a bite to eat.

Thank you for your support with this day-we hope it will be memorable for the children.

Love Spoon Bakery Competition

❤️ WRITE A LOVE LETTER ❤️

The Love Spoon Bakery is doing a community project at the bakery and we’ll be taking part as a House Competition.

The Bakery is collecting love letters – notes about who or what you love.
It can be anything: a person, a pet, a moment, a memory, or something tiny like the way the light hits the fields on a frosty morning.
It can be a single sentence, a full letter, or even a poem.

The letters will be turned into a growing installation in the bakery window for everyone walking past.

Winners will receive a box of cakes on Valentine’s Day and House points.

The deadline for entries is next Friday so we would like to encourage children to create their entry at home! Please submit these to Mr Hughes in Leopards who will choose a House winner before dropping them at the bakery.

Online Safety – Social Media, Screen time and AI advice

SOCIAL MEDIA & SMARTPHONES

We have held a couple of parent evenings to discuss smartphones and children this term for parents navigating the world of smartphones and social media use.  We recommend delaying access to smartphones for primary-aged children for many reasons around access to damaging online material from explicit material to violence and psychologically damaging content.  Below is a link from the Children’s Commissioner called “What I Wish My Parents or Carers Knew” which has been written with children who have grown up using smartphones:

What I Wish My Parents Knew – A Guide For Parents & Carers on Managing Children’s Online Lives

AI USE & DEEPFAKE IMAGES

A worrying trend developing nationally is the use of AI by young people to manipulate or create explicit images of staff, each other, or anyone else.  It is important that all families are aware that not only do these images create significant emotional harm to others, but is a serious criminal offence and can result in serious criminal consequences according to The Protection of Children Act 1978 and the Online Safety Act 2023.  Please speak to your children about the use of AI if they have access.  Again, we recommend that primary-aged children do not have access to these tools without direct supervision.

SCREENTIME ADVICE

Something for us all to think about for ourselves and our children, concerns are growing about the amount of screen time young children are receiving.

Digital devices are part of everyday life for many young people 📱 but how do they really impact wellbeing? The guide below explores how screen use can affect sleep, emotional regulation, physical health, and online experiences, and why concerns about wellbeing are growing.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any queries or concerns around your children’s use of digital technology, or are not sure what to do for the best.
