Football Mania

To celebrate the World Cup, After School Club children have made a fantastic display with Mrs Bodnarova for the tournament🏆  It is brilliant! The giant footballer is Mr Halford shaped as they drew around him.  Miss Lewis has delivered flags to all in the classes for our Coleham sweepstake with a prize for the winning class. Let the games begin! ⚽️

Yr 2 @ The Botanical Gardens

Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic day out at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham 🌿, where they explored a wide variety of tropical plants 🌴 from around the world. The visit provided the perfect opportunity to bring their learning about Charles Darwin to life, helping them to deepen their understanding of how different plants adapt to their environments 🌱

Bikeability for Year 6

Cycling Safety was the priority for our leavers this week! They are now ready for cycling to secondary school and venturing out in the summer holidays.

Headteacher Message

It has been another busy and positive week here at Coleham, with lots to celebrate across the school.
There is definitely a sense of excitement in the air at the moment, not just because we are heading into the weekend, but also because the World Cup has now begun, having kicked off on 11 June. As always, it is a great opportunity for children (and adults!) to follow a global event, learn about different countries and, of course, enjoy a bit of football along the way. I have been assigned Mexico and Sweden so I’m already off the a great start! I am sure many of you will have your own teams to cheer on at home.
Our Year 2 pupils had a fantastic trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens, where they were able to bring their learning to life. The children represented Coleham brilliantly throughout the visit and engaged wonderfully with everything on offer. Trips like this make such a difference, and it is always a pleasure to hear the enthusiasm when they return.
A particular highlight this week was our group of children who performed at “Shropshire Sings” at the West Midlands Showground. This is an annual event which brings together schools from across the county to celebrate music and singing. Our pupils were absolutely fantastic—confident, joyful and a real credit to the school. Events like this take a lot of courage, and we are incredibly proud of how well they represented Coleham.
Alongside these big events, there has been plenty of great learning happening in classrooms throughout the week. It is always a privilege to walk around school and see the children so engaged, whether they are writing, investigating, creating or collaborating with one another.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support: it really does make a difference.
I hope you all have a great weekend, hopefully with a bit of sunshine, and enjoy watching the football if you are following along!

Dear Families,

Welcome back to the final half-term of the year!  This week has been as busy as ever…  I had the absolute pleasure to join Year 6 on their residential to Pioneer for the first 3 days of this week and what an incredible experience for everyone it was!  The children had a great time; the staff had a great time and the activities were amazing.  I have NEVER been on a residential trip that ran so smoothly with children that were so resilient; so brave; so supportive of each other; so sensible and so quick to get to sleep!  No one needed speaking with about anything silly – what a brilliant three days!  They can be very proud of how they have represented themselves, their school and their families!

The Belle Vue Arts Festival is in full swing and it’s been wonderful to see our children contributing the brilliant art on the shop windows around Coleham: go and take a look!  We’ll be going to see the various exhibitions soon with all the children too.

We’ve also had some theatre trips this week to see the Enormous Crocodile; designed sandwiches with ASDA; shared lunch with our Year 2 families; and had a great afternoon in Year 1 talking about the past with family members.  Thank you to everyone who came in to share their stories with the children: being part of their learning is so important and is much appreciated.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Art in the Community

You may have seen lots of window art popping up for the Belle Vue Arts Festival cheering everyone who walks past.

Esme has decorated benches on Upper Road to jolly up the pavements.

Look out for Connie’s butterflies, Fern’s flowers, Laurie’s toadstools and Autumn’s fairies brought together in a display of fairytale fantasy at The Allotment in Coleham.

Year 3 Get Creative with Sandwich Design! 🥪✨

Year 3 have been busy, budding chefs and designers in their latest Design & Technology project! The children have been designing their very own sandwich flavours, thinking carefully about combinations of fillings, textures, and tastes.

To support their learning, they had the opportunity to sample a variety of delicious sandwiches, kindly donated by Asda—thank you for your generous contribution! This tasting session helped the children to think critically about what works well together and what makes a sandwich truly tasty.

Next, the pupils will be making their own sandwiches, as well as designing eye-catching packaging to showcase their creations. We can’t wait to see their fantastic results!

Year 6 Attend Crucial Crew 🚨

Year 6 had a fantastic opportunity to take part in Crucial Crew, where they learned essential life skills to help keep themselves safe. The children explored important topics such as online safety, stranger awareness, and the dangers of drugs, alongside wider safety issues including water, fire, and road safety.

They were taught by experienced professionals, including the Police and Fire Service, making the day both engaging and memorable. Well done, Year 6, for your excellent participation and maturity! 🌟

Year 1 & 2 Enjoy a Trip to the Theatre! 🎭📚

Year 1 and Year 2 had a wonderful trip to Theatre Severn to watch The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl.

The children were captivated from start to finish, joining in with the fun and excitement as the mischievous crocodile’s story unfolded on stage.

This trip was a brilliant way to inspire a love of reading while also giving pupils the chance to experience live musical theatre.

Well done to all our brilliant pupils for representing the school so beautifully🌟

Belle Vue Arts Weekend Events

The traditional start to our festival!

Join us for a laid back family event where we celebrate all things relating to ‘fantasy’.

Location: This event is held on the town centre side of Greyfriars bridge, using both the green open space and St Julian’s Friars cul-de-sac will be closed to traffic.

The outdoor event is free to attend and includes themed stalls and activities (on the green and alongside the bridge approach). We also have stalls and activities on the closed off road; with live music performances by local musicians.

Activities:

  • A live rolling music programme.

  • Informal drop in activities for kids/adults including: Lego/Duplo, Colouring Sheets, Fantasy Character Art, Spot the fantasy creatures competition and, back by popular demand, our Community Art Board painting, this time it’s Mark Chagall’s, Julnar the Sea-Born

  • Archery – dragon target with Shrewsbury Bowmen

  • Fantastical Face Painting – Guide leaders fundraiser

  • Ogre cut out photo-board where you can take your own fantasy photo selfie

Themed stalls run by local organisations:

Step into a world of magic as storyteller Danielle Free tells the story of ‘Prince Loaf’ – a tale full of giants, magic, kings and princesses, and a magical loaf of bread!

Once the tale has worked its spell, children get to create their very own story map complete with a treasure‑trail of characters, paths and magical places, wherever their imagination takes them.

This relaxed, friendly session is ideal for younger children and their grown‑ups, offering a lovely blend of listening, imagining and creating together.

This event is FREE but spaces are limited, so you will still need to book here. (Parents and carers do not need to book).

Mental Health Week

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week.  We’ve been talking about activities that make us feel good and have practised some yoga with Yoga Teacher Dionne.  Year 6 made some positive affirmation bunting.  Mrs Stewart ran her biggest Zumba class to date which we loved!  The best way to finish the half term, all together with mood boosting music, happy faces and feel good exercise.  The staff even enjoyed some relaxation at Miss Salter’s art class after school.  We’re all ready to continue the rest, relaxation and connection with families and friends over half term.

Yr 3 Liverpool Trip

Year 3 took a trip to Ancient Egypt during their visit to Liverpool World Museum. It was fantastic! They were able to view genuine artefacts and real mummies in the Egyptian Gallery which were 4,000 years old! Wow! Then they got some hands on experience, working together to mummify a ‘person’ in an interactive and gruesome workshop.

They explored the Wild World Collection : Dinosaurs and natural history and then rounded off the day with a wonder around the Walker Art Gallery..

History, Science and Art all under one roof!

Yr 3 Egyptian Day

Year 3 became Egyptians for the day to ‘wrap up’ their history topic.  We’ve been stepping back in time to write hieroglyphs on papyrus, make Egyptian Gods & Goddesses Top Trumps and wrap up some mummies!  We’ve now completed our history topic and are experts in Egyptology!  What a lovely way to end the term.

Headteacher Message

Dear families,

We’ve made it to another half-term break and this one feels earned.  This has been a very busy half-term, but has been one of the most positive, calm and productive half-terms in recent history!

So much to mention this week: first of all, a huge well done to our U9s and U10s boys’ football teams, who both reached their respective County finals at the weekend. These are fantastic achievements in themselves and reflect a lot of hard work, determination and teamwork across the season. Commiserations to our U9s, who gave it absolutely everything and were just pipped at the end – a tough way to finish, but they should feel very proud of their efforts. Meanwhile, a huge congratulations to our U10s, who retained their title and brought the trophy home for the second year running – a brilliant accomplishment. Thank you to Miss Lewis, Mr Halford and Mr Hughes for their time, energy and commitment in guiding the teams throughout the year.  As well as the football, our athletics and netball teams represented the school (and all of Shrewsbury!) brilliantly in recent indoor athletics and netball finals. A fantastic second place finish for Coleham – well done!  Our sporting teams can be very proud of their achievement hits term!

Years 3 & 5 had a fantastic time during their Egyptian Day in Year 3, and their Viking Day in Year 5 this week. The classrooms echoed with energy as pupils fully embraced their themes: Viking battle cries were heard and mummies were made (not mummies of children…).

We also celebrated an excellent individual achievement this week. George was crowned our school chess champion after an impressive series of matches. Not only that, but he also managed to beat me in what started as a very tight game before falling apart rather quickly once my attack was thwarted. Must try harder, Mr L – well played, George!  The picture above captures the moment well: I was 2 moves away from a check-mate before it unraveled spectacularly, and if you look carefully, you can see a man in the exact breaking moment of realisation.

For me, the highlight of the week had to be the Year 1 ukulele concert. It was a joyful event, full of confidence and smiles. Music is so important and and it was wonderful to see them performing so proudly. A big thank you to Mrs Porrett for all of her work in bringing music to life for our pupils.

See the newsletter section about our new Family Forum to see how you can help shape our school better for the future.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I hope you all have a restful half term break.

See you all in June!

♟️Mr Larkham’s defeat

George had already triumphed in Mr Williams’ Chess Tournament to claim the title of Coleham Champion but one challenge remained. One very important challenge.

The Headteacher.

What followed was a tense, tactical showdown. Pawns marched. Bishops sliced across the board. George played with the calm focus of a grandmaster. Mr Larkham remained confident.

Then came the moment.

Mr Larkham spotted what he thought was a brilliant checkmate. He leaned in. He smiled. He prepared to celebrate.

And George… quietly scuppered it.

One move. One twist. One headteacher suddenly out of luck.

George triumphed again.  Mr Larkham has mysteriously not been seen in school since — though rumours suggest he is somewhere practising openings, muttering “Sicilian Defence” under his breath, and vowing a rematch.

Until then, George stands undefeated. Coleham’s champion. The student who toppled the Head.

Yr 1 Ukulele Concert

Mrs Porrett has been teaching Year 1 how to play the ukulele, and they showed off their skills by performing to parents. Learning to play an instrument takes patience, focus, and a lot of practice.  Their confidence has grown week by week, and it was wonderful to see them proudly strumming along and sharing what they’ve learned.

Year 5 Viking Day

Year 5 didn’t just learn about Vikings — they became Vikings.

With fierce face paint, braided hair, and costumes worthy of a Norse saga, our pupils stormed into school ready for adventure. They painted shields, crafted their own Viking‑style jewellery, performed their battle cries on green screen and mastered the strategic Viking game of Kubb.

But the moment that will be remembered for years to come happened on the hill. Standing tall against the wind, the children re enacted their Viking battle cries — this topic inspired incredible writing- and some of their strongest work this year.

Viking Day brought history roaring to life!

Last week we tested our Viking longboats and you can see how we got on here:

Staff Art Club

For Mental Health Awareness week we’ve been doing lots of activities that are good for the soul. Miss Salter ran a watercolours art class after school so staff could relax and connect. Keeeping with the Belle Vue Arts Festival fantasy theme.  We’re all artists here…

Yr 5 Art Workshop with @ BVAF

Fifteen Year 5 creatives unleashed their inner artists at a brilliant Belle Vue Arts Festival workshop. We always love Art Teacher Mr Griffiths’ workshops… and here’s a fun fact: he was Miss Heap’s Art Teacher when she was at school!

With 2026’s festival embracing a fantasy theme, our young artists rose to the challenge, painting a sky full of soaring dragons. Their magical masterpieces are set to be proudly displayed at the festival gallery in June🐉🎨
