Science Week 2023

Miss Harris our Science Leader organised an action-packed Science Week for us all.  We’ve had an incredible array of visitors and fluffy friends join us and a real insight into KS3 Science at secondary schools and beyond for future careers.

Watch our Science Week video below:

Belvidere Tag Rugby

On Friday 24th March, Mr Venn took a team of 10 children to participate in a Tag Rugby competition at Belvidere Secondary school. The children competed really well, and managed to go unbeaten, only missing out on the trophy on the total amount of tries scores.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION WEEK

It’s School Production Week!

The children and residents from Hazledine Court will be watching the dress rehearsals for Jungle Book this week in school and our shows are on Wednesday 29th March and Thursday 30th March evening at 6.30pm.

Calling all home bakers! We would be really grateful for CAKE DONATIONS for our performance intervals.  These can be dropped at the school office.

Edwin will be raising money for The Rainforest Trust at the performance. Please visit his stall.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION ART COMPETITION

We have had some fantastic entries for our School Production Programme Competition.  Thank you to each and every child for your wonderful artwork.  We love all of the designs.  We will use as many as we can for our Jungle Book Programme and welcome display.

Lascells Visit

We were really lucky to have Rory Whitehead and Dr Nichola Swann join us from Lascells Ltd.  Lascells manufacture science equipment and we are partnering with them on some education pilot projects. Rory and Nichola came to teach Year 6 staff and pupils some exciting, practical experiments for KS2 and KS3 science.  This is great transition for the children as they prepare for further science laboratory work at secondary school.  Dr Nichola also talked about science as a career and her PHD.

The children all made a loud speaker and then listened to their favourite song ( Rick Astley in case you are wondering!) We saw an Alcohol Cannon fire and a Sugar Bomb explode whilst learning about the explosivity of alcohol vapour and combustion of fine powders.  It was a brilliant science lesson inspiring us for future physics and chemistry work.

Beekeeping Workshop

Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Association joined us in the classroom. Year 10 students delivered a fantastic Beekeeping workshop for our Year 3 pupils.  Children explored the hive, tasted different honey and guessed which was the most expensive, learnt about the Beekeepers protective clothing and made a beeswax candle. Thank you so much to Shrewsbury School pupils!

The first chick has hatched!

A lot of cheeping can be heard behind the curtain in Rabbits classroom.  That’s right our first chick has hatched!

How egg-citing!

Yr 1 @ Blists Hill

Year 1 headed off for a Victorian day out in Ironbridge, they explored the Victorian town and got involved in a candle dipping workshop.  They walked miles and enjoyed their historic day.

Yr 5 @ The Space Centre

Year 5 had a supernova time at the Leicester Space Centre. Year 5 are our resident space experts in school after learning about the Space Race. They were in awe when they visited the planetarium!

Quarry Run Champions

Mr Venn took a team of runners from year 2 up to year 6 to Shrewsbury High School to compete in their annual Quarry Run.  U9’s completed a 1.5km race whilst the U11s completed a 2km race, both with a gruelling hill halfway.

The children were amazing, each and everyone of them gave it their all, and most importantly cheered for everyone, including those from other schools.

We finished 1st overall in all four categories, taking a clean sweep of the shields – amazing work.

Science Week Competition

Miss Harris has launched a Science Poster Competition!

Make a Connections themed poster at home!

We’ll be joining in with British Science Week National Poster Competition.

British Science Week 2023

As an introduction to our Coleham Science Week, we invited Sue from Fun Science to deliver an exciting science assembly.  We saw lots of chemical reactions take place.

Mr Venn’s Farewell Event

Join us to say farewell and Good Luck to Mr Venn at his last Shrewsbury Junior Parkrun.

It’s a 2km lap starting near the tennis courts and children aged 4-14 can take part for free and parents often run with their youngest children or cheer along the route.  We have arranged it with the organisers so that on the 26th March 2023 there will be a Coleham School Takeover event.

MEET AT THE BANDSTAND AFTERWARDS FOR A PICNIC BREAKFAST IF YOU WOULD LIKE TOO

We would LOVE it if we could boost the profile of Junior Park Run within our Coleham School community, whilst at the same time celebrating everything Mr Venn has done for our school, children and their families.

Lost Property

Look out for the Lost Property tables outside over the next few weeks before Easter Holidays.  We’ll put tables outside morning and evening on fine weather days

School Production Tickets on Sale

Jungle Book tickets are now on sale!

Our School Production takes place on Wednesday 29th March and Thursday 30th March at 6:30pm in our School Hall.

Tickets are £5 per person and are on sale via ParentPay.  Refreshments will be available on the night.  Please note we do not issue actual tickets as payment secures your place.  We will close ticket sales when our hall capacity is full, so please purchase early to avoid disappointment.

Our fabulous Year 5/6 cast and crew of this year’s school production have been working so hard on this show so you are in for a treat.  Led by Mrs Stennett as Director, Mrs Morgan and Miss Cox Choreographers and Miss Heap on Costume Department.

Yr 5 Assemblies

Year 5 showed off their work on the Space Race to their parents.  We heard their biographies of Neil Armstrong, Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova, saw their ‘space inspired’ dance/gymnastics routines depicting stars and constellations in the galaxies and watched an impressive video which links together all of the children’s flashback narratives about the end of the world into one final story.  Well done Leopards!  Lions Class tested their parents with a multiplication challenge and an interactive Kahoot Quiz on Space!

Science Week

Science Week is back!

This year we are celebrating British Science Week, the week commencing 20th March. This year’s theme is ‘Connection’s’.

We will be launching Science Week to the children through a Science Assembly this Friday (17th) led by ‘Fun Science’ leader Sue Hayward.

Throughout Science Week we will be learning about connections through the topic of animals and living things. We will have caterpillars, butterflies, tadpoles, hatching chicks and even have lambs visit us from a local farm.

We are also very lucky to have visitors in school, including a doctor, ecologist and 3 local Secondary School teachers coming to share their passion for science through some highly engaging science lessons for pupils in KS2.

In Year 6 pupils will be exploring a range of science resources and equipment, kindly on loan by parent Mr Whitehead and his company Lascells Ltd.

We really are very excited about all the science due to take place.

Walk, scoot or cycle to school challenge

Eco Council Project

Get set… we’re taking part in Sustran’s Big Walk and Wheel 2023; the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge starts next week runs for two weeks from Monday 20th March – Friday 31st March. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child(ren) to walk, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.  The Eco Council will be logging our numbers for each day of this national challenge.

We understand that it may be more difficult for some pupils to take part than others for example those at Breakfast Club or who live further away from school.

Why we are taking part

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity and wellbeing in children’s daily routine and a active school-runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gates.  Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!

For more information about the event go to www.bigwalkandwheel.org.uk . Enjoy the challenge!

Jungle Book- Behind the scenes

It was our Saturday School for our whole day rehearsal for Jungle Book!  Costumes were prepped, scenery painted, dances choreographed and the children performed a full run through.  It’s going to be a great show!

Yr 4 Residential

Year 4 enjoyed their 1 night residential at Condover Hall, made even more memorable by the snow!  They reached new heights, played Laser Tag, enjoyed an evening quiz but most of all worked as a team, stayed away from home and made lasting memories.

All trip photos can be shown on the video link below:

FRIDAY-SCHOOL CLOSED

Dear Parents/Carers,

SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED TODAY

Kind regards,

School Office

Information for Friday

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you for supporting us today in school and being sensible about the weather conditions.  We’re used to flooding but we haven’t seen snow for a while.  The children had a lovely time exploring the snow at lunchtime.

As you know, when emergencies or weather conditions arise, our Senior Leadership Team will continually monitor and assess the situation on an ongoing basis.  As soon, as any decision is made affecting families, you are then notified immediately via email and the school website so thank you for trusting us and looking out for our communications.

Thinking ahead for tomorrow, we have the following update:

  • Breakfast Club will be operating as normal.
  • Children are welcome to wear alternative footwear appropriate for the weather conditions.
  • It may well be icy on the playgrounds tomorrow morning.  With this in mind, children are recommended to enter straight into school via any of the doors at the front of the main building.  Year 1 and EYFS can enter via their classroom doors as normal.  Therefore no one will need to access the playgrounds at the back of school.   Mr Jones works hard to ensure that main paths to the front entrances are cleared and gritted.
  • It is our intention to run after school clubs tomorrow evening.  If this changes, we will communicate with you in good time.

As weather circumstances are unpredictable, please continue to check your emails regularly.

Kind regards,

Miss Harris

Deputy Headteacher

Yr 1 Victorian Workshop

In history, Year 1 had a visit from the Shrewsbury Museum who delivered a workshop on Victorian toys.  The children stepped back in time along the timeline, exploring different types of toys. They then set up their own museum and became experts and visitors on the Victorian toys.

Yr 4 Assembly

Year 4 show cased their work to their parents this week.  They sang a French song about the weather and showed their art sculptures plus lots more.  Well done Dolphins and Whales.

Storyteller

Today EYFS and KS1 had a storytelling visit from Sal Tonge who brought her chatterbox and guitar with her to entertain us all.

She then delivered workshops to EYFS, Yr 1 and Yr 2., lots of singing, stories and communication.

Yr 5 Museum Trip

Today Lions and Leopards visited the moon exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum which was a great way to compliment their Earth, Space and Space Race topics.  We are so lucky to have such a wonderful museum on our doorstep.

Go everywhere and read!

To switch things up for World Book Week, our Drop everything and read sessions have become GO EVERYWHERE AND READ!

Look at our children outside, in the Quarry and even reading in the museum!

World Book Day

We love WORLD BOOK DAY at COLEHAM.  Our Reading Leader Mrs Young started the morning by talking on the radio about all our activities in school.  If you want to listen click the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0f1k4wn

We’ve all had lots of fun dressing up as characters or in our comfy reading clothes.

Every class has visited our Pop-up Book Shop to select a World Book Day book to take home and lots of classes are popping out of school to GO EVERYWHERE AND READ.

Take a look at our brilliant costumes!
