The Jungle Book

Our School Production Team produced an incredible show for us all! The school has been a hive of activity and we have been blown away by the talent and teamwork from the cast and production team.  There’s been such an array of skills from the children! Acting, dancing, singing, narrating, selling popcorn, creating artwork for the programme and set design, logistics from the back stage crew, lighting and microphone technicians, fundraising and front of house.  Shining examples of creativity, co-operation and ambition. A big thank you to our Director Mrs Stennett and our wonderful children, staff and family audiences.

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to everyone who attended our School Production of “The Jungle Book” this week.  We are so proud of every child involved, from the actors to the dancers and back stage crew.  A huge thank you, of course, goes to Mrs Stennett, Mrs Morgan, Miss Heap, Miss Cox and all of the other staff involved for their hard work and dedication.  What a way to end a fantastic term here at Coleham!

Today, we have said farewell to Mr Venn, who is relocating to Devon with his family and Miss Talbot who is leaving EYFS for a new school closer to home.  We wish them the best of luck.  It was lovely to see so many Coleham families at the Park Run on Sunday.  The run itself was dedicated to Mr Venn and was the busiest park run in the country on Sunday with 194 children running  – a huge thank you to all who attended.  Mr Venn has inspired so many children and staff at Coleham school to be fit and active.  He has gone above and beyond in every aspect and will be greatly missed by us all.  Of course, we wish him well and hope that he will pop and see us when he is next in Shropshire!

Term starts again on April 17th and we have a busy Summer term planned with house events, trips and sports days.  We are also looking forward to inviting you all into classrooms and, of course, we have some social events planned too.  I hope that you all have a lovely, relaxing break and look forward to seeing you after the break.

Kind regards,

Claire Jones

Cross Country @Attingham Park

Well done to 70 Coleham children who participated in a cross country event at Attingham Park with other schools. What a lovely countryside course and a great opportunity for parents to watch the runners.

Parent Survey 2023 letter and results

Dear Parents/Carers,

Many thanks to those parents who completed our Parent Questionnaire earlier this term.  We have looked closely at the questionnaires and comments which we received (110 replies were received) and we have considered our response.  Overall, we were delighted with the very positive response we received from parents, with 99% of parents saying that they would recommend our school to others.

In considering our reaction, we have added up the responses that were either “strongly agree” or “agree” and presented the information accordingly at the end of the letter.   We are very pleased where results are over 90%,  but where results are below 90% (as they are for 2 questions), we are keen to review our processes and see where iprovements can be made.  We have also considered the comments we received from you all regarding how we can further improve and, of course, the many positive comments we received, which were a delight to read.  Thank you to those parents who put their names to comments shared: this enables us to follow up any concerns personally if we feel this is appropriate.

I have taken each question in turn, where the % of parents agreeing to the statement was lower than 90%, and I have hopefully provided you with a satisfactory response, explanation and/or reassurance of our determination to improve:

  1. My child has been bullied and it was dealt with effectively

The % of parents agreeing to this comment was 74%: a signficant improvement on last year’s data, but still not as strong as we would like.  A total of 84% of you stated that your children have not experienced bullying.

It is important to know that incidences of bullying are rare but they do occasionally occur at Coleham.  When they do occur, they are always taken very seriously and dealt with in line with our anti-bullying procedure.  We constantly teach our children to treat others with kindness and respect, in line with our 3 school rules.  Sometimes, however, children can make mistakes.  This is part of growing up and school is a safe environment in which they can occasionally make mistakes.  When children make the wrong choice, there is a consequence and we support all parties, where necessary, to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.  Incidents of unkindness, whilst dealt with robustly, are usually not defined as bullying and sometimes the word “bullying,” which is clearly very emotive, can be used incorrectly to describe a particular behaviour by parents and children.  Bullying is when the unkind behaviours do not stop and often involve groups and/or power imbalances.

If you are concerned about how your child is being treated by others, e would urge you to come and talk to your child’s class teacher in the first instance.  We will then be able to investigate situations and provide consequences and support, where necessary.  It is not always appropriate to inform parents of the exact actions that we have taken in relation to sanctions given to other children, however, please trust that we do deal with behavioural and bullying incidents in a consistent and robust manner.

  1. When I have raised concerns with the school they have been dealt with properly.

15% of respondants to the survey disagreed with the above statement.

If you have any concerns with school, we would urge you to come and talk to your child’s class teacher in the first instance: many issues can be easily resolved quickly.  If you feel that this needs to be escalated to a member of the Senior Leadership Team, then your child’s class teacher will immediately refer the issue onto the phase leader and/or Mr Larkham or me.  We take all concerns very seriously and always take time to investigate situations carefully before taking appropriate and robust action

If you do not feel that a concern has been dealt with appropriately, please do get in touch with the school office as soon as possible and a member of the Senior Leadership Team will contact you regarding your concern.

Within the comments section, a number of parents/carers commented on our communication systems, both positively and with some suggestions.  We know there is so much to remember as a parent about events in school and so we want to provide useful information to you in a more streamlined approach.  We have therefore started to produce a weekly newsletter, which links directly to our school website and provides all of the important information regarding dates/reminders for the week ahead, and also some information about what your children have been doing at school this week.  Individual teachers will also continue to post information on DoJo regarding your children’s learning.

There were also a small number of comments raised regarding after school EXTRA-CURRICULAR clubs.  We always aim to run an array of after school clubs because it is really important that the children all have the chance to pursue their interests and talents, thus developing the whole child.  As you know, we have improved the booking system so more spaces are available, but some parents commented that the release time of clubs is difficult for working parents to book spaces.  Moving forward, we will therefore be releasing club spaces at 6pm and hope that this will address these concerns.

Finally, there were some interesting comments regarding our rewards system at Coleham.  It is difficult to please all parents and children with regard to rewards, and it is the inherent nature of reward systems that they need refreshing from time to time so that they remain both appealing to the children, and fair.  With this in mind, we will be seeking the views of the children next term and looking to further develop our reward system for September.

Overall, the feedback that you have provided to us was overwhelmingly positive with many, many comments about the strong community ethos of the school.  Our aim has always been to educate the whole child providing them with a broad and rich curriculum and it is wonderful to read that so many of you feel we are doing a good job!  The many positive comments and praise for our dedicated and hard working staff team were also much appreciated.  We have, of course, shared your comments with the whole team.   Thank you, once again, for your valuable feedback on our Parent Survey.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Jones

Coleham School Junior Parkrun Takeover

Wow, what a Coleham Community we are!  Thank you to so many families for turning out to celebrate Mr Venn’s last Shrewsbury Parkrun.  Thanks to everyone’s participation, Shrewsbury Junior Parkrun was the largest Junior Parkrun in the country with 194 runners crossing the finish line!  What a great way for us all to come together, keep active as a family and raise the profile of Junior Parkrun.  It was also the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Michael Venn family and everything our Sports Coach has achieved for sport at Coleham over the last 8 years.  Well done to all the runners, you were fantastic!  What a great way to start a Sunday morning.

We’re in the news.  Read the news article below:

Year 5 ended Science week with some outdoor learning.  Their science lessons took place outside with pupils investigating air resistance, levers and pulleys as part of their science work around forces.

Science Week 2023

Miss Harris our Science Leader organised an action-packed Science Week for us all.  We’ve had an incredible array of visitors and fluffy friends join us and a real insight into KS3 Science at secondary schools and beyond for future careers.

Watch our Science Week video below:

Belvidere Tag Rugby

On Friday 24th March, Mr Venn took a team of 10 children to participate in a Tag Rugby competition at Belvidere Secondary school. The children competed really well, and managed to go unbeaten, only missing out on the trophy on the total amount of tries scores.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION WEEK

It’s School Production Week!

The children and residents from Hazledine Court will be watching the dress rehearsals for Jungle Book this week in school and our shows are on Wednesday 29th March and Thursday 30th March evening at 6.30pm.

Calling all home bakers! We would be really grateful for CAKE DONATIONS for our performance intervals.  These can be dropped at the school office.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION ART COMPETITION

We have had some fantastic entries for our School Production Programme Competition.  Thank you to each and every child for your wonderful artwork.  We love all of the designs.  We will use as many as we can for our Jungle Book Programme and welcome display.

Lascells Visit

We were really lucky to have Rory Whitehead and Dr Nichola Swann join us from Lascells Ltd.  Lascells manufacture science equipment and we are partnering with them on some education pilot projects. Rory and Nichola came to teach Year 6 staff and pupils some exciting, practical experiments for KS2 and KS3 science.  This is great transition for the children as they prepare for further science laboratory work at secondary school.  Dr Nichola also talked about science as a career and her PHD.

The children all made a loud speaker and then listened to their favourite song ( Rick Astley in case you are wondering!) We saw an Alcohol Cannon fire and a Sugar Bomb explode whilst learning about the explosivity of alcohol vapour and combustion of fine powders.  It was a brilliant science lesson inspiring us for future physics and chemistry work.

Beekeeping Workshop

Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Association joined us in the classroom. Year 10 students delivered a fantastic Beekeeping workshop for our Year 3 pupils.  Children explored the hive, tasted different honey and guessed which was the most expensive, learnt about the Beekeepers protective clothing and made a beeswax candle. Thank you so much to Shrewsbury School pupils!

The first chick has hatched!

A lot of cheeping can be heard behind the curtain in Rabbits classroom.  That’s right our first chick has hatched!

How egg-citing!

Yr 1 @ Blists Hill

Year 1 headed off for a Victorian day out in Ironbridge, they explored the Victorian town and got involved in a candle dipping workshop.  They walked miles and enjoyed their historic day.

Yr 5 @ The Space Centre

Year 5 had a supernova time at the Leicester Space Centre. Year 5 are our resident space experts in school after learning about the Space Race. They were in awe when they visited the planetarium!

Quarry Run Champions

Mr Venn took a team of runners from year 2 up to year 6 to Shrewsbury High School to compete in their annual Quarry Run.  U9’s completed a 1.5km race whilst the U11s completed a 2km race, both with a gruelling hill halfway.

The children were amazing, each and everyone of them gave it their all, and most importantly cheered for everyone, including those from other schools.

We finished 1st overall in all four categories, taking a clean sweep of the shields – amazing work.

Mr Venn’s Farewell Event

Join us to say farewell and Good Luck to Mr Venn at his last Shrewsbury Junior Parkrun.

It’s a 2km lap starting near the tennis courts and children aged 4-14 can take part for free and parents often run with their youngest children or cheer along the route.  We have arranged it with the organisers so that on the 26th March 2023 there will be a Coleham School Takeover event.

MEET AT THE BANDSTAND AFTERWARDS FOR A PICNIC BREAKFAST IF YOU WOULD LIKE TOO

We would LOVE it if we could boost the profile of Junior Park Run within our Coleham School community, whilst at the same time celebrating everything Mr Venn has done for our school, children and their families.

Lost Property

Look out for the Lost Property tables outside over the next few weeks before Easter Holidays.  We’ll put tables outside morning and evening on fine weather days
