✨ Year 5 Greek Day – A Legendary Adventure! ✨

Today, Year 5 stepped back in time to the world of ancient Greece, filled with gods, goddesses, and heroic legends!

🍞 We made and cooked our own Greek flatbreads and mixed delicious tzatziki, learning how food connects us to ancient cultures.
🏛️ In art, we designed temples, discovering the beauty and symmetry of Greek architecture.
🏅 Everyone threw themselves into our Olympian challenges and mini sports events, showing true heroic spirit!
🎭 We finished the day with awards ceremony, led by the mighty Mr Hughes and the fearsome Medusa (Mrs Stennett) – thankfully no one turned to stone!

We are so proud of the creativity, effort, and enthusiasm shown by every child today. A truly mythical day to remember! ⚡

Creativity with Author & Illustrator Huw Aaron!

We had an absolutely fantastic morning when Welsh cartoonist, author and illustrator Huw Aaron and Ed from Puffin Books joined our pupils for a live draw-along session and author Q&A! This was a truly special occasion as it was the first time we have welcomed a graphic novelist to our school. Graphic novels are hugely popular with our older pupils who devour title after title!

We all drew along to discover the characters in Huw’s new books:

📘 Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob – A hilarious bedtime story picture book
📗 Unfairies – A colourful graphic novel full of silliness, mischief and not-so-cute fairies

A huge thank you to Huw Aaron for inspiring our young readers, writers and artists. We hope this is just the beginning of many creative adventures! ✨📚🎨

Clubs Release

Clubs for next half term run from Tuesday 4th November and will run up to and including Thursday 18th December.

Please have a look at the Club Schedule HERE and Booking Information and chat with your children about which clubs they might like to sign up for.

Clubs will be released for bookings on Wednesday 15th November at 6pm.

Please visit Arbor to book clubs run by our staff. ( If Arbor won’t let you progress to payment it means that the club spaces are full) We also offer clubs run by external providers, flyers to book direct with the club leaders will also be released on Wednesday 15th November.

We will also have lots of Christmas events next half term including after school movie nights.

Safeguarding Alert! Spy Dogs Books

We have been made aware that several titles in the Spy Dogs, Spy Pup, and Spy Cat series by Andrew Cope contain a weblink at the back of the book that no longer directs people to information about the books. Instead, the link has been compromised and now leads to inappropriate and unsafe material, containing pornographic content with no age restrictions.

We have removed any copies of the book from school.

Below are images of some of the front covers in the series to help you identify the books should you have any at home. We advise you remove them immediately.

Yr 1/2 and 3/4 Author Visit

Booka Bookshop has arranged a brilliant Author event for Years 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 taking place on Friday 10th October.

Huw Aaron has two books published: Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob (£7), a hilarious bedtime story picture book, perfect for KS1 pupils and Unfairies (£9), a full colour graphic novel full of silliness and not-so-cute fairies, for KS2 pupils.

If you would like your child to have a signed book on the day, please purchase one via Booka Bookshops website.

EYFS visit Holy Trinity Church

Our EYFS Foxes and Badgers enjoyed a special visit to Holy Trinity Church this week as part of their RE learning. 🕊️

They discovered the meaning of Baptism in this Christian tradition and learned how it celebrates new beginnings and belonging.

Hands-on experiences like these help bring learning to life and inspire curiosity and respect. Thank you Rev Fi for showing us around your beautiful church. 🌟

🌟 A Visit of Thanks 🌟

Our School Council visited the amazing team of Network Rail employees to thank them for all their hard work over the holidays. They gave their time and skills to repair, build, and transform our school allotment – creating a space that will benefit us all for years to come. 🌱✨

We shared an important message with our children: when someone helps us, we should always take time to say thank you. Gratitude matters, and good deeds should never go unnoticed. 💛

School Council visit The Food Bank

We were delighted to welcome Rev Fi from Holy Trinity Church to lead our Harvest Festival assembly. It was a time to reflect on gratitude, community, and the importance of sharing with others. Thank you to everyone for your generous Harvest donations! 💛

Our School Council had the privilege of delivering the donations to The Shrewsbury Food Bank, helping to support families in our community.

Our pupils in First Aid Club have enjoyed their sessions with Set 2 Save Training! 🙌 Gaining vital life-saving knowledge and hands-on skills, covering:
🦴 The skeleton and bones – and how to recognise fractures
🧠 The brain – understanding its importance and protection
⛑️ How to help someone who has fainted or become unconscious
❤️‍🩹 The basics of CPR – giving them the confidence to act in an emergency

We were thrilled to welcome picture book author Donna David to share her fantastic Would You Rather…? series with us. 📚

Donna inspired our little learners to see how exciting books can be, and reminded us that stories aren’t just for reading – they’re for exploring, imagining, and enjoying together. 💡❤️

BBC Story Competition

Our pupils always do brilliantly in competitions!

This is a great one to try over half term- submit a 500 word story to the BBC Competition.

Stories must be submitted by 9pm, Friday 7 November

In February, 50 finalists will be invited to a grand final at Windsor Castle, hosted by Her Majesty The Queen plus you could win other great prizes for school.

EYFS Little City Visit

Exciting news! For Careers Week, we have arranged for a role play village to visit us in school. Little City will be set up in the school hall for Badgers and Foxes to try their hand at a range of careers through play.

To cover the cost of the workshop, we are asking for a donation of £4.00 per child, to be paid via your child’s Arbor account. Many thanks.

New Canopy for Year 1

Dear parents and carers,

The weeks are flying by and this week has been the best so far!

Huge congratulations to our football teams in action this week! I was lucky enough to spend some time cheering on the boys against Greenfields this week. I was really impressed with the mature performance and excellent teamwork. Greenfields were excellent and I can see the old derby with them coming back this year!

It was a pleasure to celebrate our very own Mrs Morgan and Mrs Butler this week as they celebrate 30 years each of long and brilliant service to our community. Well done!

This week has also seen my office full of children desperate to share their excellent work – I’ve seen maths, geography, science but the best has been the excellent writing I have seen – so much talent on show!

Thank you all for your continued support – have a lovely weekend!

Harvest Festival Assembly donations

We are looking forward to welcoming Rev. Fi Iddon from Holy Trinity Church to lead our Harvest Festival assembly in school on Monday.

We will be supporting The Shrewsbury Food Bank.

The Shrewsbury Foodbank is based at the Barnabas Church Centre in Coleham. They would welcome any donations of food/household items (e.g. tinned fruit/meats, tinned meals, rice, pasta, tinned spaghetti, pasta sauces, cereals, biscuits, UHT milk, toothpaste/toothbrushes/shower gel/deodorant/shampoo, laundry tablets, toilet paper and nappies).

Please place any donations on the tables outside the main entrance on Monday morning when you drop your child off at school. We are going to ask our School Council to help take the food to the Food Bank and see what an important role the food bank plays in our community.

After School Club children

IF YOUR CHILD NORMALLY ATTENDS AFTER SCHOOL CLUB WRAPAROUND CARE EVERY TUESDAY-you do not need to do anything! You do not need to buy a ticket! Your child will automatically attend if they wish too and if they are not collected at 4.30pm from The Pumpkin Party they will return to After School Club for normal collection by parents at 5.00pm or 5.30pm onwards.

Celebrating Mrs Morgan & Mrs Butler ✨

✨ A Huge Congratulations ✨

This week we celebrate two incredible members of our Coleham family – Mrs Morgan and Mrs Butler – who have each dedicated 30 years to our school! 💛

Mrs Morgan hadn’t even realised she had met this impressive milestone; it’s flown by so quickly!

Back in 1995 (in the same year as the internet arrived, Radiohead’s The Bends, Blackburn winning the Premier League and Robbie leaving Take That), both joined Coleham School on the very same day, fresh from university and ready to begin their teaching journey. Since then, they have taught and inspired over 900 children each, shaping lives with their passion, kindness, and commitment to learning.

Their impact is felt every single day – in the classrooms, the corridors and in the countless memories held by generations of pupils, staff and families.

Here’s to Mrs Morgan and Mrs Butler – 30 years of making a difference and more years to come 🎉👏💐

Author Lisa Thompson visits Yr 5/6

✨ Another bookish day for our Reading School! ✨
We were thrilled to welcome children’s author Lisa Thompson into school to talk about her brand-new mystery Skeleton Puzzle. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils were completely hooked by the puzzles and riddles Lisa shared – and even created some brilliant ones of their own! 🧩🔍

It was wonderful to see so many excited faces at the book signing in the library afterwards. A huge thank you to Carrie and Sian at Booka Bookshop for organising such a fantastic visit and giving our pupils a memory to treasure. 💛📚

Dance Troupe with Miss Cox Event Letter

DANCE TROUPE CHILDREN ONLY

Dear Parent/Carers,

Your child is currently working hard and practising for the Trust Dance Event which is due to take place in October. Unfortunately, there has been a clash of dates with a Year 5 school trip.

The children will still be taking part in the dance event, but they will only perform on the date of Wednesday 15^th October.

Costumes

A costume fee has been put on Arbor as a contribution towards your child’s costume for the performance. This dance will also be performed next year as one of the two routine’s we will take to Shrewsbury’s Gotta Dance at Theatre Severn. Therefore, after the performance at William Brookes School, Miss Cox will keep the costumes safe ready for next March.

Dress Rehearsal

A dress rehearsal will be taking place on Wednesday 15^th October in the morning at William Brooke’s School. We have organised a bus to take the children there and bring them back to Coleham School. Children will come to Coleham at normal time for registration and be back in time for lunch. There will be no dance club after school on Wednesday 15^th October, to give the children enough time to get home from school, have dinner, and make their way to William Brookes School ready for the performance.

Performance

The children need to be dropped at William Brookes School – The Edge on the evening of Wednesday 15^th October at 6pm. The performance will then start at 7pm. Please arrange for your children to be picked up from William Brookes School when the performance has finished.

Stone Age shelters

In woodland work we experimented creating shelters in Stone Age style. We used materials from nature to create our shelters. Our aim was to make them as stable as possible. We had some useful group discussions and planning while we made our shelters. We hope that you will love them too.
