House Captains 2023-24

Please meet our new House Captains!

House Captain Elections

This week all the children in school met for their first House Meeting of the year to elect their House Captains for 2023-24.

Year 6 pupils wrote speeches in class and those that wanted too put themselves forward as candidates.  We are so proud of our new Year 6 pupils, their speeches were fantastic and it is a massive achievement to have the courage to speak in front of lots of people.

Well done to all our candidates!

Street Allotment Project Report

Thank you to the Street Allotment Project for Sunday’s session.  You guys are Amazing! A glorious morning strimming, discovering raspberry canes, harvesting and sharing food. Even Nico the Street Allotment dog enjoyed the morning 🌞

Staff go canoeing

Team Coleham had lots of fun canoeing for Ms Jones farewell paddle, followed by a grazing box picnic on the river bank.  It was a good workout 💪 with beautiful scenery and a toast to Ms Jones new job as Deputy CEO of 3-18 Education.  We are so glad she isn’t going far and staying in our family of schools.

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

The week started with our usual transition day, where all our children visited their new classrooms and met their new teachers.  Many of our Year 6 children also visited their new secondary schools.  Overall, the day was a huge success and we have another transition afternoon planned before the end of term to ensure that the children get to know their new teacher and feel excited about joining their new class next year.

On Tuesday night, we also hosted our annual Showcase Concert and this year the children were incredible.  The Year 5 choir wowed us with a number of songs while many of our children showcased their talents playing instruments from the violin to the drums.  A huge thank you to Mrs Porrett and Mrs Hilbert for organising this lovely event.

Sport has been high on the agenda this week at Coleham and the Year ¾ children thoroughly enjoyed their sports day on Wednesday afternoon – thank you to all of you who attended, we hope that you enjoyed the event.  I was especially impressed to see so many of you taking part in the parent race – I hope there weren’t any strained muscles!

Last night, Coleham took a team to the Area Athletics, competing in various track and field events against 12 local schools.  I am delighted to announce that Coleham came 2nd overall!  What an achievement!  A fantastic evening of athletics and I am told that the children worked hard, were wonderful role models and exhibited excellent behaviour.  A huge thank you to Miss Lewis for organising this events and accompanying the children to the event.

Next week, we have lots to look forward to including the Year 6 Leavers Assembly.  I hope that you all have a relaxing weekend.

Kind regards,

Claire Jones

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents/Carers

Another busy week has flown by here at Coleham and it has been action-packed as ever!

Thank you to all of you who attended Sports Day this week and apologies to the Year 3 and 4 parents/carers for postponing Sports Day.  We are very much hoping for better weather next week and are aiming to run the Year 3 and 4 Sports Day next Wednesday at 1:30pm.  We hope that many of you will be able to join us.  Well done to those children who competed this week.

It was lovely this week to welcome our new reception cohort into school to meet their new teachers and visit their classrooms.  The children in the rest of the school will visit their new classrooms and meet their new teachers next Monday (3rd July) during our transition day.  This will take place during the day , so there are no changes to dropping off or picking up. If you have any concerns at all regarding next year, please do contact the school office or your child’s class teacher.  We are always happy to help and have been talking to the children in classes and in assembly about change and how it is important to embrace change and be positive.   Of course, some children will find the changes afoot difficult but our well planned transition events will support the children to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.

In addition to Sports Day and Transition Day, we also have a number of trips and sporting events going on next week.  A number of our children will be competing next week in Area Sports at London Road and we have our Showcase Music concert next week too, which many children are really looking forward to. I hope to see many of you at this annual event.

In the meantime, I hope that you all have a relaxing weekend.

Kind regards,

Claire Jones

Yr 5/6 Sports Day

Well done to all our Year 5 & 6 Sports Day competitors. Our last Sports Day for Year 6! The Sports Leaders did a great job at helping organise the event.  Severn scooped the House Cup, with Darwin coming 2nd, Greyfriars 3rd and Quarry 4th.  When we thought it was all over, staff stepped up for an impromptu three legged race.

House Eco Competition

During Eco afternoon pupils designed an Eco Code poster for a House Competition.   KS1 winner was Severn and KS2 winner was Darwin winning points for their house.  Here is a selection of the top entries.  Our Eco Codes are used for our Green Flag accreditation.

EYFS & KS1 Sports Day

What an incredible Sports Day for our youngest pupils! Well done to our Year 6 Sports Leaders for their organisation in running the event.  There was some brilliant running, egg & spoon races and everyones favourite, the House Team water race.  The sense of community from children and families and team spirit shone through! Lots of happy faces everywhere! Thank you for joining us.  Congratulations to Greyfriars for winning the House Cup for Sports Day.

Community Quiz Night

What a brilliant night! Lots and lots of fun! Staff and parents joined together for another Coleham Quiz with the best quiz master in town Mr Larkham. We were all quite envious of ‘Soggy Biscuit’ for claiming the ‘loser’ mugs.  Enough trivia on Tapirs, Mr Larkham’s favourite animal from his zoo keeper days. Until next time, looking forward to 2024!

Headteacher Swap

This week Headteacher Ms Lovecy joined us for 3 days in a Headteacher Swap across the 3-18 Education Trust. Ms Lovecy is Head at St Martins School in Oswestry which is an all through school with pupils from age 3- 16. Ms Lovecy started the week off with an assembly on Aspiration and told us about her pathway to being a Headteacher and St Martins students who have gone onto fantastic jobs in really interesting sectors.

A huge thank you to all the staff and children at Coleham school, I have had a great time.  I’ve loved seeing the reception children travel to Barmouth in their bus that they created all the way up to teaching Leopards class who were so friendly and hard working. What a fabulous school! I’ve taken away lots of your good ideas and I’ll be back for more! Have a wonderful end to the summer.

Esmai Poetry Reading

Congratulations to Esmai in Year 3 who came first in the ‘Write a letter to your Hero’ exhibit at our Plant & Craft Fair. Belle Vue Arts Festival judges were so impressed that Esmai was invited to read it aloud at The Spoken Word Poetry evening at The Hive Arts Centre.  Esmai had a wonderful evening meeting lots of local writers and poets. Well done Esmai!

Forest School Outing

EYFS children have been visiting the incredible ‘Inside Out’ Learning Forest School setting in Belle Vue woodland at the Hermitage Centre.  The children and staff have thoroughly enjoyed this time and all the expertise shared by Founder Franky.

Street Allotment Project

We are very happy that the Street Allotment Project has taken over our plot and will be putting it to good use, growing food for the community.  Read all about them here:

https://www.streetallotmentproject.org/about

They held their first volunteer session on Sunday and have already managed some planting.

We’ll be advertising future dates so you can come along and make a difference.

Gallery Preview

Miss Heap and Miss Othen attended the Belle Vue Arts Festival Gallery preview on Tuesday evening.  They had a wonderful time celebrating the children’s work with local artists and the BVAF Committee #proudandhappy #pupilartists #community #colehamcreativity

Gallery Exhibition

We were thrilled to see Art from every year group in a real Art exhibition!  Coleham Art is displayed all week at the Belle Vue Arts Festival gallery at the Barnabas Centre in Coleham. The gallery features 50 local Artists plus the work of 420 Coleham School Artists in a range of media.  The children’s work was based on this years festival theme ‘Heroes’.  The whole school has visited the exhibition to view their work and were given guided tours by the Artists themselves, how special!  Even Batman turned up!  Thank you to Artists Sue Mann, Gisela Robinson, Clifford Hannah and Pete Fricker for showing us around.  It was really impressive and a lovely experience.

Bikeability Training

Year 6 have had Bikeability Training this week run by Shropshire Council. The pupils have learnt to cycle safely out in the local community.

Lets Celebrate Art

The Belle Vue Arts Festival has kicked off! It was great to see so many families at the Lets Celebrate Art event at Greyfriars Bridge on Saturday 3rd June.  This starts ‘festival fortnight’. The children’s Hero artwork is displayed along the bridge railings for all to admire.

BVAF Workshop

Thank you to Belle Vue Arts Festival artists Mike Griffiths & Jo Aspinall who delivered a ‘heroes’ workshop to Year 5 pupils. These Hero shields will be on display at the BVAF Gallery opening at the Barnabas Centre in June.

Crucial Crew

Year 6 had a great time at Crucial Crew where they were faced with scenarios relating to keeping themselves safe. #firesafety #watersafety #knifecrime #electricity #fire safety #anti-social behaviour

Belle Vue Arts Festival Exhibits

Our Plant & Craft Fair hosted Hero Exhibits to tie in with this years Belle Vue Arts Festival theme.  Featuring Hero Posters, Write a letter to your Hero, Heroic vehicle, Bake-Off, and Hero Shields.

Look at the children’s creative designs and ideas including an Ocean Warrior Hero Sheild, nature eco heroes, animal heroes, NHS heroes and sporting heroes.  Well done to Esmai who won 1st place for Letter to my Hero and has been asked to read it aloud at the BVAF Festival’s Spoken Word event at The Hive arts venue.  Every single entry was fantastic!

Budding Entrepreneurs

Our fantastic children showcased their entrepreneurial skills at our Plant & Craft Fair.  The Scrunchie Sisters were a huge success and sold out!! The Comex Boys had some fantastic illustrations on offer and Coleham sisters made their own jewellery! Footballers Lewis and Jasper ran a Keepy Ups Challenge. Fantastic effort from all involved, thank you for raising lots of money for school. You should be very proud of yourselves 👏👏👏
