Year One stepped back in time to 1901 as they became Victorians to complement their history learning. The children thoroughly enjoyed experiencing what a Victorian school day would have been like.

In English, the children wrote on traditional slates, while in arithmetic they practised rote learning and chanting their number work just as Victorian children would have done. We had  a drill lesson in the hall, giving the children a taste of Victorian physical education.

During the afternoon, the children took part in a Victorian-style playtime, while some had a go at domestic chores from the era.  Inside the classroom, the children made peg dolls to take home—a traditional Victorian toy—and used real slates to draw and colour pictures of Queen Victoria.

The children looked fantastic in their Victorian costumes and had a truly memorable and enjoyable day of learning.

Hedgehogs and Squirrels have been learning about life in Victorian times this term and to bring this to life they visited Blists Hill Victorian town. It really was like travelling back in time as the children got dressed as victorians and had a lesson in an old fashioned school room writing on slates. The children enjoyed visiting all the different shops and even had a play in the lovely sunshine.
