Yr 6 Historians @ Longden Road Cemetery Year 6 enjoyed a fascinating visit to Longden Road Cemetery, where they met with the Friends of Shrewsbury Cemetery for a special war graves workshop. Pupils took part in a trail filled with clues 🔍 that helped them learn about the lives of WW1 soldiers. One of the most memorable moments was discovering the grave of the youngest soldier buried there—just 16 years old. The children also learnt that the war memorial headstones are made from Portland stone – the same material used to build Buckingham Palace 🏰. Using magnifiers, they were excited to spot tiny fossilised sea creatures 🐚 within the limestone. A group explored the dedicated WW1 graves, which is beautifully cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission 🇬🇧. They did a symbol spotting exercise to identify the different regimental crests carved into the graves. The visit helped to give some context around the WW1 novel Private Peaceful we are reading, where Tommo enlists underage. It made us appreciate the incredible local resource right on our doorstep and the history we can glean from past lives🌿. Thanks to Friends of Longden Cemetery for this lovely new partnership-we are learning so much!
