Headteacher Message
Dear Families,
This week really has flown by! Another busy week with plenty happening… Did you know that Monday was World Tapir Day? The world’s favourite animal has its very own special day, but alas, there was too much happening to be able to celebrate it properly (it got a brief mention in assembly though and it’s an excuse for a picture of me and Baby Ernie for the newsletter).
First things first, though: well done to all the children who completed the Shropshire Primary Schools Half-Marathon last Saturday! Over 100 children took part – our best yet!
We’ve been thoroughly enjoying using the field this week: the glorious weather at lunchtime has meant the children can properly stretch their legs on the field and enjoy more space to play, chill and chat with their friends. Well done to all the children for playing so well and following the rules and guidance for this slight change in things!
We’ve been busy planning Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday for next Friday (8th May). Supported by Shropshire Wildlife Trust, he children will all be engaging in nature and conservation-themed activities and will also be making a Green Promise about how they can make a small impact on the environment around them – maybe you can think together at home about what that could be? Recycling more; turning off lights; making your garden more nature friendly – anything! We’ll also be having a non-uniform day on the day and celebrating his birthday with a cake (you can buy a slice for a donation for Shropshire Wildlife Trust) and we hope you’ll all join us at 3pm on Friday 8th for our song on the playground! More details below in the newsletter.
I’m really looking forward to it!
Also, don’t forget the Plant & Craft Fair happening on Saturday 9th May! A lovely opportunity to get together as a community. We would really appreciate donations of cakes next Friday to help us with this please! Let us know if you are able to help with anything on the day!

Stories from Beyond the Graves
🌿 Year 5 Step Back in Time at Longden Road Cemetery 🌿
Year 5 enjoyed a truly fascinating visit to Longden Road Cemetery, where history, nature and storytelling came together beautifully. 🕊️🌳 Working with the Friends of Shrewsbury Cemetery, the children took part in a special history workshop.
We began with a quiz about the cemetery, designed by local architect Samuel Pountney Smith, before pupils set off with a cemetery plot grid to explore and locate monuments linked to real people from the past.
📜 Along the way, we uncovered powerful stories—some sad, some uplifting—that brought history to life. From poet Mary Webb, to Julia Hornblower, one of the UK’s first female doctors; from George Williams, a young orphaned WWII pilot who flew Hurricane Bombers in Canada and tragically lost his life at just 18, to Annie Caddick, a famous music hall performer who toured across Europe. 🎭✈️
🎵 We were intrigued by the symbols carved into the gravestones, telling us about people’s lives. Annie Caddick’s grave, for example, features a harp, marking her life as a musician.
🌼 Longden Road Cemetery is a remarkable place—full of history, beautiful trees and wildlife. Designed with ornate paths and winding trails, it was created as a commemorative garden of remembrance. With around 6,000 monuments, it is the resting place of approximately 60,000 people, making it a place of reflection, learning and respect.
💚 A huge thank you to the Friends of Longden Road Cemetery for this wonderful partnership. We are learning so much and look forward to many more meaningful experiences together!
Shropshire Schools Half Marathon
What an achievement for these young runners! Over 100 of our pupils signed up for the Shropshire Schools Half Marathon and had lots of fun completing this challenge!
Lunchtime Lego Fun Club
We have some fun clubs happening at lunch time including Lego, Ukulele and Chess with Mr Williams!
Year 4 Kick Off with Reading the Game! ⚽
Year 4 pupils have been thrilled to take part in Reading the Game with Shrewsbury Town in the Community 🙌
This programme combines a love of football with writing and literacy, showing children that reading and writing can be just as fun and energetic as sport! ✍️⚽
Pupils got active and practised football skills while linking them to creative writing tasks.
Thank you to Shrewsbury Town in the Community for inspiring our pupils and helping them grow both on and off the pitch 🏟️💙
EYFS trip to St Mary’s Church
Our Reception children had a wonderful visit to St Mary’s Church this week as part of their learning. During the visit, the children explored the key features of the church, with a special focus on the beautiful stained glass windows. They spent time carefully observing the colours, patterns, and stories shown in the glass, sharing their ideas and noticing small details.
We were so impressed with the children when inside the church and many members of the public stopped to speak to us and thank the children for their calm and respectful behaviour.
