Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

As we move into the very final week of the whole school year, there is far too much to reflect on!  The year has been long, with ups & downs and some brilliant highs!

This week we have had the Year 6 SATs results through which have been a delight to share with the children.  The Year 6 children and the staff team have worked incredibly hard this year and they all deserve a huge WELL DONE for not only their efforts, but the brilliant results.  75% of the Year 6 children achieved the ‘expected’ standard in reading, writing & maths compared with 62% across the country.  This is a great achievement, but the effort and attitude from everyone is what really counts and the children can be very proud – everyone, and I mean everyone, achieved.  Full results can be found on our website on the following link: COLEHAM RESULTS PAGE.

There have been trips and competition winners, parties, discos (very hot discos!) and brunches this week that you can read about in this newsletter.

Have a super weekend, stay cool where you can, and we’ll see you back for the final chapter of 2024-25!

Disco Down

The KS2 Disco was hot, sweaty and a lot of fun!  With thanks to DJ Andy O’ Brien, the best DJ in town!

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

EYFS children had a great time today racing to collect tea for their Mad Hatters Tea Party, having a go at croquet, playing stick the face on the Cheshire Cat and eating jam tarts before the Queen of Hearts could! What a way to finish the year for Bagers & Foxes! 🦡🦊

Year 6 Leavers Brunch

Thank you to Hickories for inviting Year 6 for a complimentary Leavers brunch! They really enjoyed their breakfast muffins and it was such a fantastic treat to celebrate their Coleham journey😀😀😀Thank you Hickories!

Polly and her Horticulture win!

We advertised a Shrewsbury In Bloom competition for children to complete at home.  Shrewsbury Town Council judged Polly Larkham’s planter as a winning entry and this has been planted up in the town centre to be part of our Shrewsbury Town of Flowers.  Our Mayor and representatives joined us for a celebration assembly to present Polly with her certificate.  Well Done Polly!

Gelatistry Winners Announced!

The children have been eagerly awaiting for news of our Ice-Cream House Competition, a special project where we have partnered with Gelatistry.  Gaia from Gelatistry was incredibly impressed with the recipe designs and she has selected two winners to go into production and be sold in the shop as Coleham School Ice-Cream Flavours!

Our KS2 winner was Harmony Chappell in Year 6 with her Taro, white chocolate and coconut ice-cream.  Taro is a purple root vegetable bringing a lilac colour to the ice-cream.  Gaia was especially excited to see this unusual ingredient, Gelatistry have experimented with sweet potato before, but couldn’t get it right for production so is excited to perfect this for sale.

Our KS1 winner was Florence Jennings in Year 2 with her delightful design The Tiger that came to Coleham, an orange ice-cream with chocolate stripes and flake.  We loved Florence’s creativity in taking inspiration from her favourite story: The Tiger that came to Tea.  Gelatistry typically don’t sell flakes (as it’s not the Italian way) but are ordering some in especially for this creation!

We are so very excited to see the Coleham School Ice-Creams go on sale on Saturday 12th July.  We hope that lots of families will try one over the next few weeks.

Year 4 conduct Geography Fieldwork: Surveying Shrewsbury

As part of their geography work on place knowledge, Year 4 wanted to compare tourism in the Lake District and Shrewsbury. They conducted a survey, quizzing visitors on why they were visiting 3 different locations around the town and are ready to analyse their data next week. Several members of the public commented how confident and polite the pupils were – well done!

Exploring Habitats: Dolphins Visit Rea Brook Nature Reserve

As part of our science topic on Living Things and Their Habitats, Dolphins took a trip to the beautiful Rea Brook Nature Reserve for a day of outdoor learning and exploration.

The children began by creating their own ‘Nature Museum’, using colour cards to find natural items that matched specific shades. They also worked in teams to search for items that fit different descriptive cards such as “shiny,” “bright,” “thorny,” and “soft” – encouraging careful observation.

We then explored the hedgerows, where the children hunted for invertebrates using magnifying pots to examine their finds up close. The excitement continued with pond dipping in the river habitat, where we discovered even more fascinating invertebrates living beneath the water’s surface.

Well done to all the children for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and brilliant behaviour!

Year 5 visit the Flaxmill

Year 5 showed all of our school values on their visit to the Flaxmill this week. They persevered by walking over 40 minutes there and back. They showed respect to the tour guides and exhibitions they saw. Co-operation was demonstrated during the building activities and they have been described as a “credit” to us all. Well done, year 5! We are so lucky to have such a special, historical building on our doorstep (almost…) and it was fascinating to hear how it has been used in such different ways over time. Did you know that the iron frame that was created to support the building was made right here in Coleham?! The iron forge was located behind the Coleham Deli.

Sewing Club

Sewing Club is complete for the school year!  A huge thank you to Mrs Renshaw for sharing her craft and teaching the children so many wonderful skills.

These wonderful, upcycled sock-dog characters have emerged, complete with cosy sleeping bags.  The children were given instructions on how to turn their old socks into cuddly toys. But along the way, they brought their own brilliant and playful creativity. The project was a great combination of hand stitching, machine work, creative stitches, pattern cutting, and play.

Well done stitchers and we really hope to see Pins And Needles Club again in the future.

Tennis Taster Fun for Dolphins!

Dolphins had a brilliant afternoon over at Town Walls, taking part in a tennis taster session. The children were incredibly respectful towards the coaches and approached the session with great enthusiasm. They showed some fantastic tennis skills and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Well done, Dolphins!

Virtual School’s Conference

What a deeply inspiring evening at Jaz Ampaw-Farr’s book launch – an evening hosted by Shropshire Virtual School Team who support Looked-After Children in Shropshire.
We are always motivated by Jaz’s story of her lived experiences in care and at school and her vulnerability and energy to use her past to spark change – reminding us of the privilege we have working with children and the power to be an every day hero for children!
Connection and relationships and building a community around the child are at the heart of our ethos to provide An Excellent Education for Every Child. #Colehamcares❤️ #Colehamcommunity🏡
As a ‘corporate parent’ to Looked after children we reflected by asking how can we do more? and how can we do better? to support all children in our care and be that everyday champion to improve their futures.
