Headteacher Message

Dear Families,

Here we are again at the end of another busy week – and ending on World Book Day is a real treat!

Earlier this week in assembly, we talked abut reading and I shared my favourite books.  My absolute favourite is Where The Wild Things Are – there’s so much in there for children and adults about anger, love and managing feelings.  I also asked the children to tell me their favourite books so it’s been lovely hearing all the children’s favourite books throughout the week!

We need to say a huge congratulations to our swimming team, who finished 1st place in the KS2 swimming gala. The children represented the school brilliantly, showing determination, teamwork and great sportsmanship throughout. We are incredibly proud of their effort and the way they supported one another, both in and out of the pool.

This week also saw our Book Fair, and what a joy it was! It was wonderful to see so many children excited about books, talking enthusiastically about new authors and carefully choosing their next read. As a school, we love reading more than anything, and events like this really help to nurture that passion. Thank you to all families who visited, purchased books and helped make the fair such a success – your support makes a real difference.

Congratulations must also go to our Love Spoon Bakery competition winners. The creativity and effort on display were impressive. Well done to SEVERN, who were crowned overall winners – I wonder how that will affect the house cup totals for the end of term?

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who came along to our school bingo evening last week. It was a lovely community event, full of laughter and good spirits. An amazing 141 tickets were sold, raising over £700 for the school. This money will directly support school activities and resources for our children, and we are extremely grateful for your continued generosity.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. We hope you have a superb weekend!

Best wishes

Max

Author Visit-Bryher Mackenzie

We welcomed Bryher Mackenzie as part of our World Book Week celebrations! Bryher captivated our EYFS and KS1 children with an engaging author talk, where she introduced her gorgeous picture books The Night Whale and her forthcoming title Great Aunt Margot and Me (publishing May 2026).

Bryher spent the whole day with us, leading creative workshops with EYFS, Year 1, and Year 2. The children loved discovering the magic behind how picture books are created.

📚✨ School Book Fair ✨📚

📚💚 Thank you to everyone who supported our pre‑loved Book Fair! Books flew off the tables at 2 for £1, helping us re‑home books and keep the love of reading alive

A Book for Every KS1 Child

On Thursday 26th February all children across school took part in an assembly led by Brian and Michael McCarthy. Michael is an inspiring author who kindly donated one free book to every pupil in KS1 as part of his passion to inspire reading and a love of stories.

Michael McCarthy was born 1976 in Liverpool, is registered blind, hemiplegic and has learning difficulties. Aged 8 he had a near fatal accident which left him physically and mentally challenged. After spending many months in a coma/semi-coma state, he endured hours of painful physiotherapy which eventually led to him being able to walk again. Michael is a very purposeful character and has overcome great adversity.

His sheer determination has led him to achieve completing the London Marathon, climbing mountains, competing in a London to Paris bike ride challenge, a swimming gold medal in the Special Olympics, Great North Run twice, visiting Kenya to help the Street Kids plus raising funds for charity.

Michael asked, “How can I become famous like Roald Dahl?”

“You need to write a book first,” was the reply.

The ambition has now been realised, with great success, in this series of books describing the adventures of two mischievous dogs. Woodstock and Churchill’s personalities are based on two real dogs which have been in his life.

Michael tells his stories to a friend Catherine Brown who transcribes for him. The team is complete with Rob Bennett creating magical and colourful illustrations that make the stories jump off the page.

What better way to inspire our pupils and get ready for World Book Week!

KS2 Swimming Gala Winners

What a great start to the half term with this amazing performance from this group of children at the swimming gala at Shrewsbury School.

We were blown away by the children’s swimming abilities. They were fantastic support for one another, showed great sportsmanship, and were extremely respectful. Every child participated in each race and gave it their absolute best.

We achieved many 1st places in our heats, secured 1st place in most of the relays, and finished the gala in 1st place overall.

Well done, everyone – a truly fantastic effort and an incredible achievement!

Family Bingo!

What an incredible evening! Our Family Bingo brought all the energy-141 players and children all eagerly hoping to win the giant dog! 🐶💕 The hall was buzzing with tension and a wonderful sense of community.
