Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a week it has been! We’ve had an exciting time filled with sporting achievements and wonderful events that have brought our school community even closer together. The highlight of the week has undoubtedly been the amazing house competitions run by our fantastic Year 6 house captains. Their leadership and enthusiasm has been great, and the competitions have been a great success. The spirit of teamwork and friendly rivalry has been evident in every event, and it’s been a joy to see the students cheering each other on.

Despite the excellent competitions, no one warned me that goalkeeping in your 40s would be so painful the next day!  The long-awaited transfer to the Shrewsbury Town squad will have to wait another year.

A big well done to the Year 3 team for organising such a fantastic trip to Liverpool. The children had a wonderful time exploring the museum and learning more about Ancient Egypt, amongst other things. The trip was a great success, and I want to thank all the staff and volunteers who helped make it possible.

As we look forward to the final week of term, there’s still plenty to be excited about. The house cup is just around the corner, and I know the children (and staff!) are eager to see whose ribbons will be on show.

Thank you all for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Have a wonderful weekend!

Best wishes,

Tom Larkham

Headteacher

Free Allotment Space

The Street Allotment team have transformed our allotment space, they have planted apple trees, put up a tool shed and bird feeders, tidied our planting beds and created meandering bark paths around the rhubarb patches.  It is looking lovely but sadly the Street Allotment Team are leaving us.

Free Allotment Space

We are on the look out for somebody local who enjoys gardening or being outside to tend to our allotment patch every so often in evenings, weekends or holidays.

Would you love to volunteer and make a difference to Coleham School?  Perhaps you work somewhere that is looking for a team volunteering day to do good in the community?

or

perhaps you fancy a fantastic space to grow vegetables for yourself and practise gardening with your children?

We have a green house, fully equipped tool shed and ready to go planting space.  You will be able to make it own, plant your own vegetables and come and go at your leisure.  All that we ask is that you love the area as much as we do.

Please email the school office if you are interested. Email: admin@col.318education.co.uk

Request re: toys in school

We wanted to remind everyone about our expectations regarding toys in school. While we understand that toys can be a source of comfort and fun for children, we kindly ask that they are not brought into school.

We wrote to you a few weeks ago regarding trading cards.  We are happy for these to be brought in, with the expectation that they must be able to fit in their trays.  Football cards have been a source of positive interactions at playtimes, and we would not want to disrupt that if possible.

However, we have had issues around small plastic toys, notably axolotls and other creatures, that are causing social problems. This is also leading to bigger and more valuable toys being brought in.

There are several reasons for this request to leave toys at home. Firstly, toys can be a distraction during lessons, making it difficult for students to focus on their work. We want to ensure that all children have the best possible learning environment, free from unnecessary distractions. Secondly, toys can sometimes lead to disagreements or conflicts among children, which can disrupt the harmony of the classroom and playground. By keeping toys at home, we can help maintain a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all.

Additionally, there is always the risk of toys getting lost or damaged, which can cause distress for the children. We want to avoid any upset and ensure that personal belongings are kept safe.

Of course, there are times when some children do require to have something with them: if you feel that your child is unable to cope at school without a comfort toy, sensory item, fidget or otherwise, please speak to your child’s teacher and we should be able to accommodate.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

BEAVERS! Get your votes in!

A week or so ago, we asked our children to come up with some names for the two beavers that have been released into the old river bed by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust as part of a local competition.

I am delighted to confirm that the names put forward by year 2 for the Shrewsbury beavers, Bertie and Beryl, have been selected by the Wildlife Trust for the public vote!

The public vote will be live on Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s Instagram story for 5 days from 7th April and they hope to announce the winners on Radio Shropshire, too.

Make sure you vote for the Coleham School suggestions (and ask all your friends and family to vote as well!).  The vote will be available from 7th April on the Shropshire Wildlife Trust Facebook and Instagram pages.

These are the first Shropshire beavers for over 400 years – let’s make history by using the Coleham names!

Veg Power Film by Year 2

Year 2 had an absolute ball filming this when Veg Power.org came to visit us!  As part of the national campaign to encourage children to eat more vegetables-you have to eat them, to defeat them!  We had a fun and healthy lunchtime too.

Great work behind the camera Year 2!

Junior Chefs Club for Year 5

Our school catering team have been running Junior Chefs Club for Year 5 so they learn to make a full chicken dinner, cooking a new component each week.  This week was mashed potato.  We want all of our children to learn basic culinary skills of chopping, peeling and cooking ready for young adulthood.

Year 6 Maya Workshop

The children had a fantastic day on Monday during the Maya workshop! Year 6 visited Chichén-Itzá through VR headsets, made traditional worry dolls, explored the meaning of their birthday, spelt their name in Mayan and learnt about traditional games and clothing. A fantastic introduction to our new topic!

Year 5 Hydro-powered Rockets 🚀

Today we tested our DT projects: our hydro-powered rockets.

Can you spot whose went the highest?

Wonderful designs and clever engineering meant that everyone was successful!

Planting an orchard 🍏🍏🍏🍏

Thank you to Veoila for sending us 4 apple trees! The Street Allotment Team Caspar & Fleur have helped our Gardening Club plant them in our much improved allotment space. Great job from Sophia, Wilbur and Freddie who have been tending to our plot this year.

Sadly, Casper & Fleur are moving on and our last Gardening Club session is next week. Thank you to you both, you have made such a difference!

We are on the look out for a family member or sombody in our local community that enjoys gardening and would like to tend to our plot every now and again at a time to suit you in the evenings, weekends or holidays. This would be ideal for a family or group of friends looking for an allotment & green house space to grow their own food and enjoy the outdoors.  Our greenhouse & shed is kitted out with all the tools for you to use.  We would love to hear from you! Lunchtime House Competition

The Year 6 House Captains have organised a range of competitions at lunchtimes to win points for their houses! KS1 have so far enjoyed a football dribbling competition and bean bag toss, and KS2 have taken part in penalty shoot out (featuring goalie Mr Larkham) and a skipping competition.

It has been excellent to see the children supporting their team mates. The final competition will be next week!

Well done to the House Captains for hosting the games!

Securing 2nd place in School Games Netball Tournament

Congratulations to this fantastic group of girls who competed in the School Games Netball Tournament and finished in a fantastic 2nd place! They showcased brilliant netball skills, with excellent passing, movement, and shooting throughout the matches.

Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork were clear to see, and they gave it their all in every game. This outstanding achievement is a testament to their commitment and determination – well done, girls!

It was brilliant to see such excellent netball being played, and it was a pleasure to take them out on a sporting fixture.

Year 4 Football Tournament

A fantastic group of Year 4 boys showcased their football skills in a recent  tournament, finishing in an impressive third place! The team displayed great sportsmanship, determination, and skill throughout the competition, scoring some brilliant goals along the way.

Each player gave their best effort, working together to create strong attacking plays and solid defensive teamwork. The boys should be incredibly proud of their achievement – well done to everyone involved!

A Harpist visits Music Club

Celtic Saints Music Club hosted their showcase concert this week with visiting harpist Gill Madley.

The children played instruments and sang Welsh and Irish songs in honour of St David and St Patrick in front of their parents, then finished off with an Easter egg hunt around the school’s Easter Garden. Well done everyone! Great singing!

Year 3 Liverpool Trip

Year 3 took a trip to Ancient Egypt during their visit to Liverpool World Museum. They were able to view genuine artefacts and real mummies in the Egyptian Gallery. Then they got some hands on experience, working together to mummify a ‘person’ in an interactive and fun workshop.

They rounded off the day with a wonder around the Walker Art Gallery, where they considered the differences between old and modern art. It was a fun and memorable experience for all!
