Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

It’s been a fantastic week this week, with soooo many visitors and trips going on for our Careers Week.  A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to inspire the children with you wide and varied careers.  There’s been a real buzz around the school of children chatting about jobs and their futures which is so, so valuable.  A big thank you also to the wonderful Mrs Jasper in the office for putting together the timetable – not an easy task!

Well done, and thankyou, to the children who took part in Thursday Night Dinner last night, cooking for their families (and teachers).  This Headteacher very much enjoyed his dinner!

Remember that we are only here for 3 days next week, and Thursday is the first day of the half-term break.

Have a super break, whatever you get up to!

Tom Larkham

Headteacher

Clean Air Reminders: Idling Cars

Thank you to everyone for continuing to support the School Street scheme and also being mindful of our neighbours when parking.

As we move into the colder months, we get an increase in cars waiting outside school, or anywhere on the school run, with engines idling.  Please make sure that engines are off when parked up.  Idling unnecessarily actually risks a fixed penalty notice from traffic wardens, but more importantly, it drastically decreases air quality and poses a significant health risk for many people, especially children.

It would be fair and considerate to not expose our children to car fumes unnecessarily, by turning engines off when waiting in cars, especially if parked outside someone’s house.

Thank you for you continued support!

Coming Soon!

You may have seen on the news about the grassroots movement ‘Smartphone Free Childhood’ who are on a mission to keep children smartphone free until they are aged 14.

It isn’t our intention to push this message but we feel it is an opportune time to open up discussions with parents about the benefits and risks of smart phones so that we are all more educated, taking tips from each other, learning about boundaries and rules that work for others so we can make informed choices about what we want for our children growing up.  It’s all about personal choice and sharing our experiences.

Smartphne Free

The Smartest Giant in Town for Yr 1

Year 1 enjoyed a trip to Theatre Severn to watch a performance of Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Smartest Giant in Town.’ The show was a huge hit with Squirrels and Hedgehogs.  We love READING so it was a joy to see one of our favourite stories come to life on stage!

Thursday Night Dinner!

What a magical project to be part of!  Take 12 pupils, a bunch of surplus food and a whole lot of love and inspiration from Chef the Hungry Guy and what do you get?  A school restaurant with a community meal for 40 families and staff!  All in 75 minutes!

This group of children didn’t quite know what they were in for when they arrived at the school hall but they soon got busy prepping, cooking, laying up, cleaning down, waiting on their guests before finally sitting down to enjoy the Mexican feast they had prepared.  What a restaurant team! You should all be so proud.  Massive thanks to Ali , founder of Shrewsbury Food Hub and Steve aka the Hungry Guy.  We are loving this collaboration!  We have never seen children grow so much as individuals and a team as we have seen in the 75 minutes of Friday Night Dinner.

Year 5 Visit Hickory’s!

On Tuesday, Lions and Leopards walked to Hickory’s to experience what working in a restaurant is like. They learnt how to make milkshakes, decorate pancakes, what careers are available at the restaurant and practised their waiting skills! Thank you to Allen and the team at Hickory’s Shrewsbury – we loved it!

Chef for the day @Ask Italian

Year 3 had an amazing hands on experience at Ask Shrewsbury for Careers Week! With the theme ‘Chef for a Day’ the children learnt the flavours of Italy in a pizza making workshop.  We talked about possible career choices in the restaurant industry! Thank you so much to Ask Italian for hosting our Careers visit.

Liverpool War Tunnels

Year 6 attended Western Approaches Museum, Liverpool, following their learning around World War 2.  What a cool place to visit, its set in the restored former Second World War command centre and consists of of re-opened rooms housing artefacts from when the command centre was in active use.

The children explored a former WW2 bunker and explored how people worked during WW2. They decoded messages in Morse Code and looked at the equipment used to identify enemy planes and ships. Year 6 also learnt about different aspects of the air force, military and navy, as well as life for evacuees and civilians living during WW2.  This really has brought our learning to life!  Now we all ready and excited for our Evacuee Day in school!

Yr 3 visitors for careers week

Year 3 have really enjoyed hearing from some of our Coleham parents about the varied and interesting jobs they do. Katie (and Ned) from Puppy and Friends Academy popped in to tell us about careers in dog training. Katie talked passionately about her job and Ned impressed us all with his incredible searching skills! Mr Hunt popped in to talk to us about music production, property development and the skills involved in setting up your own business. We all had a good think about what we might like to do when we grow up!

Careers Week in Year 4

During Careers Week, Whales class welcomed Olive’s mum, a baker and cake decorator, and Luca’s dad, a recruitment manager for a home help company. Dolphins class enjoyed a visit from Fern’s mum, an occupational therapist, who shared insights into her work.

We are now looking forward to next week’s theatre trip, where they’ll get a behind-the-scenes tour as part of Careers Week. Thank you to all our guest speakers for inspiring us!

From Paramedics to Gelato!

For Careers Week Year 1 learned all about being a Paramedic and what better way to do this than in an Ambulance!

At the end of the week we welcomed Coleham business Gelatistry who told us all about making gelato and running a small business.  Thank you so much to all our visitors!

Andy Bell Photography

It was a busy day for Year 5 on Tuesday as, after their fun morning at Hickory’s they had a wonderful photography workshop with local photographers Andy and Joy. They taught the children about the history of cameras and allowed them to use their photography equipment to take spooky portraits of each other. We are so thankful for this amazing experience!

Careers in Helping Others for EYFS

The children in EYFS have been so fortunate to have had 4 Careers Visitors this week!  They have learnt about being a midwife, doctor, carpenter and firefighter!  These jobs relate well to our youngest children who often role play Doctors and Fire-fighters so to hear from guest speakers in action has developed our knowledge further.

Thank you to Lindsey, Daniel, Adam and Steve and the fire crew for giving up your time to inspire and educate our youngest children!

A Grand Day at the W100 Tennis Tour

We’ve had a fantastic time at the World Tennis Tour today! The W100, the largest Women’s Tennis event in the UK outside of the grass court season, provided an incredible experience for the children. They were amazed by the world-class tennis on display, watching top players in action on the center court. The highlight was learning about past champions, including Hannah Klugman, who made history as a 14-year-old last year, and Viktorija Golubic, a Billie Jean King Cup winner and Olympic silver medalist.
The day was packed with excitement, including fun sessions on the court with professional coaches at The Shrewsbury Club. The children also had the chance to engage in a Q&A with a professional player, gaining insights into the sport. It was an unforgettable experience filled with learning and inspiration!
