Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

What an incredible week it has been.  It has been a great relief to be able to share our Ofsted report with the wider community – thank you to everyone who has taken their  time to congratulate staff for their hard work: it is very much appreciated.  It’s always good to have an excuse to celebrate the community we live and work in and what has struck me is how proud the children are of themselves and their school – you can really feel the pride when the children talk about Coleham!

This week has been a busy hive of activity around all things science.  Huge thank you to Miss Harris for organising lots and lots of visitors to school to share new experiences with the children, including an exciting assembly for all the children, including fire, bangs and pops!

A special well done needs to go to Lauren in Year 6 for selling her very first piece of art in Mrs Jones’ Gallery!  I hope Lauren will remember us and come back to visit when she is a famous artist!

And finally, don’t forget that tomorrow (27th April) is World Tapir Day – sadly not a school day, but worth checking out if you don’t know anything about tapirs.

Have a lovely weekend!

What’s on next week?

Next week we have lots of CPD happening for staff but it is a little quieter for the children.

Year 1 have Balance-a-bikeability happening over 3 days

(Parents don’t need to do anything as instructors and equipment is provided)

Year 4 are off to Shrewsbury High School for a Choral Day visit.

Year 6 parents-don’t forget to fill in the Bikeability Cycle training form for your child.

Road Closure Reminders

Please remember that Greyfriars Rd is closed to all traffic (except emergency vehicles at residents requiring access to the front doors) at the start and end of the school day.  The times are as folllows:

  • 8:20am – 09:00am
  • 2.50pm – 3:30pm

Please DO NOT park up before the road is closed and exit before the road is reopened.  We have had a small number of complaints and have seen a number of people collecting children and then driving on the pavements or removing cones without replacing them.  The closure is an important part of school safety and the traffic restrictions are legal requirements.

If you need to drive to school, please do make use of the parking at St Julian’s Friars.

Please do remind anyone else who drops off or collects your children – this newsletter only goes out to registered parents and carers.

Coleham is Outstanding!

We are proud, happy and thrilled to be recognised as an ‘Outstanding’ school.

To be graded outstanding in all areas is a huge achievement for all the staff and the children, past and present, who have worked hard every day over the last decade to make Coleham School the special place it is.  As a school, we have not put things in place or done anything special for the sake of Ofsted, neither before the inspection nor during it, and it is important that we are recognised for doing what is in the best interests of our community.

Thank you to everyone who plays a part in our school community, the inspectors have certainly seen Coleham for what it is!  We will now continue our journey, making sure that Coleham remains a great school at the heart of the community for many more years to come.  Please enjoy reading the report and of course, you know we have a little video for you all!

Science Week 2024

Thank you to Miss Harris for organising the best Science Week!  This year we explored the theme of ‘time’ in outer space with a visiting Planetarium and through a dinosaur and fossil workshop.  We kicked the week off with a fun assembly from Supersonic Sue who runs Science Cub.  Year 3 learnt all about bees and honey with Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Society students, Year 5 delved into colour experiments with Priory School Science Teacher Tamara and Year 6 had Rory and Dr Nichola visit from Lascell’s Science Manufacturing.

Lascells showcased sound waves using a Rubens Tube, looked at radioactivity with a cloud chamber, demonstrated how stars form using a gravity well and the whoosh bottle was perhaps the most exciting of all.

It is great for Year 6 to dip into some KS3 Science and hear from people in the industry ready for their next steps to Secondary School and future careers.

Overall, we’ve had a brilliant TIME!  See the highlights in our showcase video.

Girls’ Football

A big well done to all the girls who participated in this week’s football tournament! Both teams displayed excellent teamwork, fearlessness in tackles, and scored some super goals. It was inspiring to see some players trying the sport for the first time. Keep up the fantastic work!

Staff Book Club

Tonight saw the first chapter of Miss Armstrong’s Book Club! 📚What a lovely evening, to connect and expand our literary minds. Our next read is To Kill a Mocking Bird. #readingrolemodels

Supersonic Sue!

Supersonic Sue from Shropshire Fun Science delivered an exciting assembly to kick-start Science Week 2024.  Mrs Stewart was straight up there to be the first volunteer!

Congratulations to our Half Marathon Finishers!

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for this morning’s half marathon event! With the sun shining brightly, spirits were high as participants took on the challenge. A massive congratulations to all the children who completed their final mile at the showground. What an incredible achievement! Your determination and perseverance were truly inspiring. It was great to see you finishing with a smile on your face, a medal well deserved! Keep up the amazing work!

Collector buys Lauren’s Art 🎨

A massive well done to Artist Lauren.  Lauren sold one of her pieces in Mrs Jones Art Shop & Gallery.  The collector who bought the picture was so taken with it, she handwrote Lauren a letter to say how much she loved it!  We love it too!  What a great picture of Pooky the cat.   Such a clever and thoughtful illustration, it would look great on tea-towels and prints in UK homes! Well done Lauren for showcasing the Year 6 school value of ambition! Never stop creating and making art, it is good for the soul.

Friday Night Dinner

Now this was something very special! A fantastic bunch of children hosted Friday Night Dinner for their families and cooked up a storm with professional chef @thehungryguy and Ali founder of Shrewsbury Food Hub ♻️ We turned the school hall into a restaurant and the children were challenged to cook for 40 people who would be arriving in 75 minutes! The restaurant team nailed it to get service out on time! They prepped, cooked, cleaned down, laid up, served, waited and finally enjoyed the fruits of their labour, delicious! 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳

It was an incredible experience for all of us, a whole lot of love went into the Pasta Pomadoro and it was felt all around the room.  It really is a powerful and moving experience when a community of people come together to achieve something wonderful
