We want our children to have a high-quality computing education and become creators of digital technologies and computing knowledge. Computing at Coleham School aims to prepare our children with the skills, understanding and knowledge for the world of technology that they live in.
Our Vision
Through Computing, our children will:
be fluent with a range of computer skills,
become skilful and confident computer programmers,
understand that technology is everywhere and its pivotal role in our past, present and our futures,
use technology positively, responsibly and safely,
demonstrate their learning through creative use of technology.
Our Progression Document
COMPUTING Progression 2023-24
The content of the Computing curriculum at Coleham School is split four areas: Computer Skills, Programming, Computing in Society and E-safety.
There are many games and apps that children are already familiar with at home that allow them to develop their Programming skills at a very early age. At School, we build on these skills and the children learn to write code using visual blocks, combining events with inputs and actions to make things happen in a program. Children have opportunities to learn, practise, apply, be creative and build their own apps and games. Children are encouraged to use the correct terminology and debug and fix existing code.
When Applying IT in Society, pupils develop an understanding of computer networks, the internet, the world wide web and the opportunities they offer. They learn to use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are ranked and learn to carefully evaluate digital content. Children learn about important, inspiring people in history who have shaped the Computing World.
We believe that it is important that pupils are taught how to navigate content safely and make sure they have the confidence and awareness to raise anything they’re not sure about. Our E-safety curriculum follows the ‘Education for a Connected World’ framework by the UK Council for Internet Safety. The 7 key topics covered are: self-image and identity, online relationships, online reputation, online bullying, health, wellbeing & lifestyle, Privacy & security and copyright & ownership. We use quality, age appropriate video lessons and activities created by ‘National Online Safety’ experts to support our teaching.
Celebrating Computing
We are constantly investing in the latest equipment to enable pupils to achieve in Computing and appreciate technology in the real world. Each year group has immediate access to laptops and iPads to provide instant, and endless possibilities between pupils and technology. Computing is embedded across the whole curriculum to make learning creative, children regularly use iPads within the classroom and love using the green screen to film their own presentations. We hope that children have the independence and confidence to choose the best tool (app, program, software) to fulfil tasks and challenges set by teachers. We offer extra-curricular clubs such as animation and coding to develop children’s interests.
