History should build a deepening knowledge of the past, a respect for its people and an appreciation of how historians make sense of the past.
At Coleham we aim to develop a secure understanding and awareness of chronology and the passing of time. We want children to understand local, national and world events from the past and appreciate the impact on their lives today. We have carefully selected history topics to personalise our history curriculum and capitalise on local links and history.
The children will study the lives of significant men and women in the past who have contributed to National and International achievements and study features of the past, the nature of ancient civilisations- their expansion and dissolution. The children will explore why people did things, research causes and make links between events: begin to explore bias and historical interpretation. The children will also gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts undertaking studies about democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of other faiths and beliefs.
Our Vision
Through History, our children will:
understand the past and how it has shaped life as we see it today,
read timelines in various forms and have a good understanding of chronology,
ask questions to develop a picture of the past,
use a variety of historical sources and evaluate their usefulness,
talk about significant people in history and know the impact they had on the world.

Celebrating History
Our pupils LOVE their history topics and are fully engaged with them in school and at home. We take full advantage of our historic county town and history topics are enhanced by a variety of workshops and trips and local history on our doorstep, you can regularly see our pupils walking to The Shrewsbury Museum or Shrewsbury Castle and exploring the Tudor buildings in our town centre. If we can’t travel to historic sites then teachers take the opportunity to plan our own special history days where children can live like a Roman or Viking for the day and work in a cross curricular way.
Check out the Viking Raid of Coleham which was created during the Year 5 Viking Day.

Unique to Coleham is our very own Victorian Museum. We have carefully preserved our school history, by creating our own museum, containing genuine school historic artefacts and documents. This museum is sited in the former Coachman’s living quarters, in our listed Coach House which once belonged to the Limes estate and was restored in early 2000’s. Explore former pupils of Coleham School, the history of The Limes and everyday life for a Victorian family.
