Art is the expression of ideas, thoughts and feelings through sensory experience in a variety of two and three-dimensional media which includes drawing, painting and sculpture alongside printmaking, architecture, craft activities, digital art, music, dance, and aspects of drama. We are not concerned with a ‘finished’ piece of art work but more importantly the artistic process; through exploratory sketchbook work, we journey through the ideas, concepts and process of practicing and developing artistic skills. Through the medium of art, children can develop non-discriminatory attitudes and appreciate the works of art from a variety of cultures and time periods. Pupils learn Art History through their Artist Studies, learning about the life, influences, work and impact of a diverse selection of artists.
Our Vision
Through art, our children will:
See themselves as artists,
Talk about art, making links between themselves, culture and creativity,
Confidently explore ideas and experiment freely with a wide variety of artistic practices and media,
Develop an interest in and appreciation of the art of others,
Learn about the life, works and impact of a diverse selection of artists.

Celebrating Art
Coleham School has strong links with local galleries, artists and creative residents, working in partnership with them to provide art clubs and workshops. It is a real focus for our children to interact with art in our community and in galleries and museums both locally and further afield. We promote opportunities to visit and collaborate with local galleries and all pupils are actively involved in the Belle Vue Arts Festival, with many showcasing their work in the exhibits and galleries during ‘festival fortnight’.
We are proud that ‘Creativity’ is the curriculum ‘golden thread’ running through our school; it makes Coleham such a special place to be! Therefore, other opportunities to nurture children’s creativity occur in other subjects throughout the year.
The Townsend Gallery
Here at Coleham school we hold the principle that ‘we are all artists’, and our in-school Art gallery provides opportunities to share and appreciate the children’s artwork. We display a whole range of work, from sculptures to drawings, from crafts to prints, from paintings to music and light instillations. We value the artistic process and much of the work on display comes straight from the children’s sketchbooks. We are looking forward to displaying work from Parents, Staff and the local community in future exhibitions. Our gallery’s name gives tribute to Judy Townsend, founder of the Belle Vue Arts Festival and local art legend.
