Year 4 Ancient Rome Day

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of their topic on the Ancient Romans, Year 4 class will be having an Ancient Rome Day on Thursday 26th October.

The day will include lots of exciting activities linked to this theme. Please can your child bring an empty cereal box in too, as we will be doing some Roman-themed crafting on the day.

If possible, we would like the children to come to school dressed as a Roman, be it a Centurion, an Emperor, a “citizen of Rome”, a slave or a Roman God/Goddess! Please do not feel you need to purchase dressing-up items for this event: a flat bed sheet can easily be turned into a Toga; a large scrap of fabric or plain clothes and scarf as a slave tunic, a cardboard box and some tin foil into a Centurion’s Breastplate or shield.  Please see some inspiration below.

We will be going outside during the day so please ensure your child brings outdoor shoes and a coat.

We are really looking forward to being Romans for the day!

Yours sincerely,

Miss Armstrong & Miss Lewis

Careers in Construction

Construction company Bowmer & Kirkland visited Dolphins today for some STEM activities designed to inspire future careers.  Bowmer & Kirkland have recently completed the brand new school building for Bowbrook Primary School.  Kasia and Alastair told the children about their roles as Social Values Manager and Senior Design Manager.  Thank you Bowmer & Kirkland for visiting and kicking off Careers week!

Swimming – Year 4 Dolphins

As part of the National Curriculum your child will be going to the Quarry Swimming Baths for swimming lessons.  Each lesson will take place on a Tuesday morning for 5 weeks, starting 24th October and ending 28th November (excluding 31st October, which is half term week).

Miss Lewis will walk her class to and from The Quarry Swimming Baths: not only will it provide pupils and staff with a pleasant walk through our lovely local park, but also no funding need be sought from parents to cover transport costs.

Please could you ensure your child remembers to bring their swimming costume (no bikinis please), goggles and towel in on the day they go swimming, as they will only be disappointed if they have to stay behind or sit and watch! Thank you.

National Poetry Day.

Today we celebrated National Poetry Day by welcoming local poet Michael Carding to Coleham. Michael started off the morning with an assembly for the KS2 children. Here he shared some of his poems which the children loved. After this he spent some time with Dolphins and Whales learning all about poetry.

Cricket

This half term, several classes – Hedgehogs, Owls, Starfish, and Dolphins – have been participating in weekly cricket sessions led by Mr. Smith from the Shropshire Cricket Board. Over the course of these sessions, the children have been steadily improving and learning new cricket skills. They are now excited to showcase their progress by participating in mini games next week.

Year 4 Trip to Deva Roman Discovery Centre, Chester

To complement this term’s history curriculum work we have arranged for Year 4 to visit the Deva Roman Discovery Centre in Chester. Whilst there, they will attend a workshop on the Romans, learning all about their way of life, and be given a tour of Chester city by a “real-life” Roman soldier.

The visit will take place on Thursday 19th October, departing school at 9.00am and returning around 3.15pm. If we encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

The cost for this trip is £18.00, which includes the cost of the workshop/Roman tour, transport and insurance. Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure. Please also ensure that they wear school uniform and have a lightweight coat with them. We will not be visiting the souvenir shop so no additional spending money is required.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Playground Friends

Well done to Year 4 who applied for their job as Playground Friends.   Some children have started their new job and are being really helpful supporting younger children on the KS1 playground.

School Food Roadshow

Wow, Years 3-5 had an absolute blast with The School Food Roadshow!!! Learning about healthy eating, food groups and cookery has never been so much FUN! A big Thank you to Chef Ben for hosting and talking to us about his superpower ADHD.  Team Red Chillies were the Cookery Champions with their Chicken Noodle dish and runners up Team Green Peppers made a delicious Lentil Curry. Thank you to our School Caterers ‘Academy’ for organising this fantastic event!

Yr 4 Tudor Trip

Year 4 have been learning about the Tudors and so visited Shrewsbury Museum for a Tudor workshop and Tudor walk around our historical town looking at features of a Tudor building and design to identify if the inhabitant was rich or poor.

Year 3 & 4 Sports Day

What another fantastic Sports Day for the year 3 & 4 children! Well done to each and everyone of you, you were all incredible. There was such a brilliant atmosphere and a great team spirit, cheering each other on.

Severn were the winners, Greyfriars runners up, Darwin in 3rd place and Quarry in 4th.

Year 4 trip to Shrewsbury Museum

As part of this term’s history curriculum work on The Tudors, we have arranged for Year 4 to visit Shrewsbury Museum for a Meet the Tudors workshop and take part in a Guided Walking Tour of the town on Thursday 6th July.  We will be setting off from school shortly after morning registration and expect to arrive back at school around 2.30pm.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by school before departure.  Pupils should wear school uniform and bring with them a lightweight coat/sunhat (depending on the weather forecast for that day). As they will be doing a fair amount of walking, they will also need to wear comfortable shoes or trainers. No additional spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £6.90, which includes the workshop and the tour.  Those that contributed towards last term’s cancelled Reabrook trip will only need to pay £1.40 i.e. £6.90 less £5.50 (the correct payment will show on your child’s ParentPay account when you pay for the trip).  We ask that payment be made prior to the date of the trip please. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips so we hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Yours sincerely,

Gallery Exhibition

We were thrilled to see Art from every year group in a real Art exhibition!  Coleham Art is displayed all week at the Belle Vue Arts Festival gallery at the Barnabas Centre in Coleham. The gallery features 50 local Artists plus the work of 420 Coleham School Artists in a range of media.  The children’s work was based on this years festival theme ‘Heroes’.  The whole school has visited the exhibition to view their work and were given guided tours by the Artists themselves, how special!  Even Batman turned up!  Thank you to Artists Sue Mann, Gisela Robinson, Clifford Hannah and Pete Fricker for showing us around.  It was really impressive and a lovely experience.

CLASS MIXING (EYFS / Year 2 / Year 4)

At Coleham, we mix our classes at the end of EYFS, Year 2 and Year 4.  Soon, our staff will begin the process of organising the new classes for the next academic year and we want to let you know about the process and its benefits so that you are more informed and better able to support your child if they have any anxieties about the process.

Mixing the 2 classes widens our children’s social horizons, allowing them to make new realtionships with children they perhaps don’t know so well.  Eventually, all the children will be forced to make new relationships when they transition to secondary school, and we find that children from Coleham, and other schools that mix, fare better when this time comes.

Many children have made new friendships after a class mix, whilst retaining and strengthening existing friendships.  Making these new relationships (including those between children’s families) helps to further grow and strengthen our school community.  In addition, there may be negative relationships between some children in-class that can be broken.

It is natural for you children to be wary about being in a ‘new’ class, however, please remember that your children already know all (or most) of the children in their year group.  For some, it can feel as if they are moving to a completely new class in a new school with new, unknown children, but this is not the case.  Any children in their current class who are mixed into a different class will still be there at playtimes, and they will remain with many of the children they are currently with, whatever the mix.

The process of mixing is not a light undertaking.  We know the children really well here at Coleham, and we have a good understanding of the relationships in and out of class.  When mixing classes, we do not rely on any one source of information, but instead use a combination of soures to ensure that the best mixes are arrived at.  To find the best mixes:

  • we consult the children in a child-friendly way over their preferences;
  • we make use of ‘sociograms’, where relationships are mapped out through survey data;
  • we work as a team to use our professional knowledge of relationships, both social and work-wise;
  • we will also consult parents.

I attach a link to an optional form where you can, confidentially, share any strong feelings you may have about the makeup of the mixed classes; the form is not compulsory.  Please be assured that we will seriously consider any parental recommendations or feelings, but cannot guarantee anything at this point.  We are most likely fully aware of positive and negative relationships that your children have, but if you are concerned, I recommend you fill the form out.  If you choose to use the forms, please fill out on

Town Walls Tennis

Dolphins went across to Town Walls Tennis courts to be coached by an ex tennis coach. This was a lovely opportunity for the children to explore the skills of tennis and to be coached by Trevor, who has many years of tennis experience.

Yr 4 Residential

Year 4 enjoyed their 1 night residential at Condover Hall, made even more memorable by the snow!  They reached new heights, played Laser Tag, enjoyed an evening quiz but most of all worked as a team, stayed away from home and made lasting memories.

Yr 4 Trip to Rea Brook Valley Nature Reserve

As part of this term’s Science curriculum work on Animals and Geography work on Rivers we have arranged for Year 4 to visit Rea Brook Valley Nature Reserve on Thursday 30th March. Whales class will leave school at 9.30am, returning around noon; Dolphins will leave school at 12.30pm (following an early lunch sitting), returning around 3.15pm. As both classes will be at school during lunchtime children will not need to bring in packed lunches for specifically for this trip. Whilst at the Nature Reserve, each class will take part in a workshop provided by Shropshire Wildlife Trust staff.

The cost for this trip is £5.50 per child, including the 2 workshops. Payment should be made via your child’s ParentPay prior to 30th March please.

Children should wear suitable outdoor clothing (as per Forest School-type activities), with plenty of layers to keep out the cold, and bring along a warm/waterproof coat for possible inclement weather.  Wellington boots will be essential as the paths are very muddy in some places.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Yr 4 Assembly

Year 4 show cased their work to their parents this week.  They sang a French song about the weather and showed their art sculptures plus lots more.  Well done Dolphins and Whales.

World Book Day

We love WORLD BOOK DAY at COLEHAM.  Our Reading Leader Mrs Young started the morning by talking on the radio about all our activities in school.  If you want to listen click the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0f1k4wn

We’ve all had lots of fun dressing up as characters or in our comfy reading clothes.

Every class has visited our Pop-up Book Shop to select a World Book Day book to take home and lots of classes are popping out of school to GO EVERYWHERE AND READ.

Take a look at our brilliant costumes!

Author Visit

YES, it’s our WORLD BOOK WEEK! We kicked it off with a fantastic visit from librarian and children’s author James Nichol.  James is author of The Apprentice Witch series and new novel The Spell Tailors.  The plot involves stitching magic and memories into clothing and we heard how James weaves everyday objects and memories from his childhood into his story.

Later in the afternoon, we had a book signing event in the library and of course we have bought copies to read in school!

Thank you to James for travelling to see us, we loved hosting you.

Some lovely feedback below from James too!

CONDOVER HALL: 9th & 10th MARCH 2023

In preparation for the impending trip to Condover Hall, we will be spending some time over the next week or so going through Condover arrangements with the children.  We thought that you also would appreciate a bit of additional information and clarification to help you prepare your children for what we are sure will be a very positive and exciting experience for them.

Packing & Preparation

  • CLEARLY NAME ALL CLOTHING AND PROPERTY!
  • If possible, choose a soft hold-all rather than a rigid case as this makes storage in the dorms easier and gives the children more space. Please DO NOT WORRY if this is not possible!
  • Please allow your children to be as involved in the packing of their bag as possible, this will help them to be more aware of what they have and where it is – it will also help them when packing for the return home.
  • Please provide a large plastic bag or bin bag for dirty or wet clothing.

Packed lunch for Thursday

  • Your child will need to bring their own packed lunch with them to school on Thursday 9th March (unless your child is eligible for Free School Meals and you have requested that we provide a school packed lunch) as the first meal provided by Condover Hall will be dinner on Thursday evening.

Medication

Put any medication in a container with your child’s name written clearly on the front along with clear instructions and dosage. Please let us know some time prior to our visit if your child will be bringing medication.

Thursday morning

  • We will ask the children to do the ‘big’ hugs and goodbyes at home before leaving for school.
  • Please allow your child to bring their own bag into the classroom.
  • Only come into class if you have to provide us with your child’s medication or if you have to tell us some new information.
  • Please be aware that if you wish to wave off your child, the coach will not be leaving until around 11.30am at the earliest.

Wednesday afternoon

  • The coach will return at approximately 3:30pm-3.45pm, depending on the traffic. We will phone ahead if delayed for any reason. Please watch the noticeboard outside school for any changes.
  • PLEASE WAIT INSIDE THE SCHOOL GATES UNTIL ALL BAGS HAVE BEEN UNLOADED – you will be able to greet your children before collecting bags.
  • Be aware that your child’s wellies/wet clothes bag may have become separated from their main bag – please ensure to collect ALL your child’s belongings.

DON’T FORGET

  • Water bottle – NOT GLASS

NOT ALLOWED

  • Mobile phones
  • Electronic games/devices e.g. PSP
  • Extra snacks/sweets
  • Cameras – school will be taking plenty of pictures/videos

ALLOWED

  • Maximum of £5 spending money – to be placed in a sealed envelope with child’s name and class written on outside

Hopefully, this information will help avoid any last minute worries or queries.  Your cooperation in these matters will be greatly appreciated and will contribute to the smooth running of the trip.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Miss Jones & Miss Lewis

Chinese New Year

Today we all celebrated Chinese New Year in school with each class learning about the festival.  Year 1, 2 & 4 were treated to a Chinese Dragon Musical workshop. It was Amazing! We also had a delicious Chinese Lunch.

Watch the video of Leopards Class Lion Dance for Chinese New Year.

Yr 4 Engenuity

Year 4 visited Engenuity in Ironbridge to support their Science work on electricity. They took part in an electricity workshop and made Jitterbugs. When the circuit connected, the wheel turned and they ‘jittered around’!  They also explored lots of practical experiments in the science museum.  Nell said “ it was fun, we got to touch everything. I would recommend going there”

Chinese Dragon Workshop for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4

As part of our religious studies, we have arranged for our Year 1, 2 and 4 pupils to take part in a Chinese New Year Dragon Workshop at school on Thursday 2nd February. Each workshop, provided by Sounds Roadshows, will include activities such as lion and ribbon dancing and music making on authentic Chinese musical instruments, and will feature two fabulously colourful 15 metre dragons. Very exciting!

As we have no other way of funding this workshop we would be extremely grateful if parents could contribute £3.70 per child towards its cost. Payment is to be made via your child’s ParentPay account by Wednesday 1st February please.

To mark the Chinese New Year, there will be a Special Menu on Thursday 2nd February

Year 4 go to Meole Brace

YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL TRIP TO CONDOVER HALL:  9th-10th MARCH 2023

Dear Parent/Guardian,

At Coleham we are always looking for ways that we can make children’s education more exciting and interesting and also to provide a broad range of experiences for our children.  We have run a residential trip for year 4 pupils for a number of years now and it has always proved to be very successful.

The positive effect that a residential visit has on children is huge – children become more confident and independent; develop stronger, more cooperative and understanding relationships with their peers; and they learn to organise themselves away from home. Such a visit was, in fact, recommended to us by OFSTED, during a previous inspection, as a way of enhancing the children’s experiences and curriculum.

The visit will take place on 9th to 10th March 2023, with children arriving at Condover around 12.00pm on Thursday, staying overnight and returning to school on Friday afternoon for around 3.30pm- 3.45pm. Whilst at Condover Hall they will take part in a variety of exciting team-building/problem-solving activities appropriate for their age group/ability.

The cost of the trip is £92.40 per child, including transport, accommodation, food, supervised activities, equipment and insurance. We recognise that this is a significant sum of money so have broken it down into two instalments of £46.20. We would be grateful if you could pay the first instalment by 31st January 2023 and the remainder of the trip balance by 3rd March 2023. Of course, if you wish to pay this sooner that would also be appreciated.

If you are worried about making full payment by the given deadline, please do come and talk to me or contact the office: we can extend the payment schedule to give you more time to cover the cost.

If your child is worried about any aspect of the residential trip, please do not worry as class teachers have plenty of time to prepare the children.

Our SENDCO, Mrs Howson, will be contacting any families in advance of the trip where we have identified that children may need some additional support or adjustments.

We will contact you again nearer the date of the trip to go over the finer details and address any outstanding queries you or your child may have.

This trip will be an amazing experience and we hope very much that all our Year 4 pupils will attend. If, however, your child WILL NOT be attending the trip, please do let the class teacher know as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Hilbert

Yr 4 Roman Day

Dolphins celebrated everything they’ve learnt in their history topic at their very own Roman Day. They have eaten olives, pitta and honey, made mosaic tiles and legionnaire shields and enjoyed a Roman workshop.
