Year 4 have been living up to all of our school values as they take on the role of Playground Friends. They are making sure everyone has someone to play with and leading lots of fun games, such as duck, duck, goose and What’s the Time Mr  Wolf? Well done, year 4! #colehamcares #colehamcareers

Year 4’s DT pop-up book reading with EYFS

Year 4 enjoyed reading the pop-up books they made in DT to the EYFS children. The reception children were super respectful, and the Year 4s read their books brilliantly, allowing the younger children to explore the mechanisms. It was a wonderful experience for both groups!

Year 4’s Persuasive Letters to Save the Severn!

Year 4 are sick of the sewage dumping in the River Severn and decided to write persuasive letters to our new Shrewsbury MP, Julia Buckley. They took their letters and their protest down to the postbox at Greyfriars Bridge. They even got a clap from enthusiastic onlookers! #cleanwater #savethesevern

Yr 4’s Living Things and Habitats Trip

Year 4 went on our trip to the Reabrook with The Wildlife Trust as part of our Science learning, where we built habitats for living things, pond dipped to find invertebrates, captured insects to look at more closely in magnifying jars, coloured matched natural resources to a colour cards and sketched the living things that we found.

Yr 4 Guitar Concert

Our Year 4 guitarists performed solo and as a group for the whole school, accompanied by their music teacher, Jerome. Their songs included ‘Homer Simpson’, ‘God Save the King’ and ‘Lord of the Dance’! What skill, talent and bravery!

Yr 4 Geography Fieldwork

Year 4 went to three locations in town to gather data in a survey to investigate our Geography enquiry question: is tourism the same in The Lake District and Shrewsbury?

Year 4 were so confident and considerate when speaking to members of the public – one person commented how polite they were. Well done!

Athlete Adrian Patrick leads Coleham Circuit Training

As a finale to our Olympics Week we were visited by a third medal winner!  Sprinter Adrian Patrick, a Commonwealth Games Gold winner for 4 x 400m relay led the whole school in circuit training.  These intensive 8 minute sessions saw the children do sit ups, press ups, squats and jumps which we all loved.  The perfect Friday morning work out! He talked to us in assembly about always remembering our vision and dream and not being distracted by behaviours that won’t lead us to our end goal.

What a week of incredible experiences.  Thank you to Miss Lewis for all her hard work and meticulous organisation.

Coleham shines with 2nd place finish at Shrewsbury Area Athletics 2024

An incredibly huge well done to every single child who took part in Area Athletics this evening. It was a huge success to watch you all compete and give it your all. I am so proud of you all for your dedication and team effort—you are truly incredible.
It was amazing to see so many of you take home medals and secure an outstanding 2nd place overall, competing against 12 other schools. Well done, Coleham! You should feel extremely proud of yourselves.
Congratulations once again on your remarkable achievement!

Olympics Showcase Song

Our Olympics Festival Day was fantastic and we finished with a showcase song to parents.  Mrs Porrett led the children with ‘We are Shropshire’ and ‘Wavin Flag’.  There is nothing more powerful than when we come together to sing on mass.  Our Coleham Community all together! A lovely end to the day.

Beth Tweddle visits

Olympic Gymnast Beth Tweddle visited us for our Olympics Week!  What a fantastic day! In a whole school assembly she talked about her gymnastics journey from age 7 to winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in London 2012.  She told us about the importance of fitness and healthy eating and the amazing team around her that contributed to British Gymnastics success.  Year 3 and 4 were lucky enough to have a gymnastics session with Beth before every pupil in school went to collect a signed photograph to take home! An incredible day of memories and all to inspire the children ready for the Paris 2024 Olympics! Beth is flying out to Paris in a few weeks to cover the gymnastics events.

Olympics Festival

What a day!  Miss Lewis organised a day off curriculum for our own Olympics Festival.  It started with a whole school run to Paris, the equivalent of 435 miles.  For 20 minutes all the children and staff ran around the schools grounds and it was such fun!  500 happy faces walking, jogging, running to Paris with the music motivating us.

Out Festival contained sports stations entirely run by our year 6 cohort of Sports Leaders who were fantastic at explaining, demonstrating and encouraging the children.  The younger classes were buddied up with older classes working together which was really lovely to see. The children participated in long jump, high jump, relay hurdles, triple jump, an Olympics quiz, shot put before stopping for an outdoor picnic lunch.  In the afternoon the children played badminton, handball, discus, javelin, relay and we finally finished with a  showcase song to parents.  Phew!! What an action-packed day!  Now we are all ready to watch the Olympics starting on 26th July.

Yr 4 Green Screen History Videos

As part of their English learning on playscripts and History learning on the Tudors, Year 4 wrote, directed and performed their own Horrible Histories sitcoms to inform and entertain, with a live audience, using green screen. The idea was that a modern child swaps lives with a Tudor family, creating some comedy moments. What an achievement!

Year 3/4 Sports Day

Year 3/4 Sports Day was a FANTASTIC EVENT! We had the perfect weather, great House Spirit and most importantly everybody enjoyed it!  Thank you to our families for your support.

This year’s winning place was tied between Severn and Darwin with 196 points.  Quarry came 2nd with 206 points and Greyfriars third with 233 points.

Well done to Miss Lewis and Mr Halford for all their hard work.

A spectacular Tudors day for Year 4

🌹 We had a terrific Tudors Day, filled with a variety of exciting activities that transported us back in time. The day was a true celebration of history and fun. We fully embraced the spirit of the era, wearing fantastic costumes that added a vibrant touch to the day.
Throughout the day we took part in some Morris dancing, jousting, biscuit decorating, acting at the Coleham Globe, tudor house building and punishing an infamous wrong ‘un in the stocks!

Yr 4 Tudor Fashion Show

As part of their learning on the everyday lives of Tudors, Year 4 held a fashion show to consolidate key vocabulary learnt about Tudor clothing including: ruff, doublet, breeches, hose, kirtle, chemise farthingdale and gown. Grab your sunglasses and vip ticket, Tudor Fashion week is the hottest event in town!

BVAF Barnabas Gallery

It’s been brilliant to see lots and lots of classes popping out this week and heading over to the Barnabas Centre Art Exhibition for the Belle Vue Arts Festival.  Every child has produced a  piece of art for the exhibition and Badgers and Foxes Art has been hung by the Greyfriars Bridge.  Not only do the children get to see their own work displayed but also work from other local artists.  Such a variety to see!  The Exhibition is open Saturday 10-4pm if you would like to see your child’s work.

Year 4 visit a Mandir

🕉️This week, Year 4 had the wonderful opportunity to visit a Mandir, immersing themselves in the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of Hinduism. The visit included a guided tour of the temple, where students learned about the significance of various deities and rituals. They also participated in a brief meditation session and observed traditional prayers taking place. This enriching experience provided valuable insights into the diverse religious practices and fostered a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.

Yr 4 Trip to a Hindu Mandir

Year 4 had a lovely visit to the Shree Krishna Mandir in West Bromwich as part of their learning on Hinduism. They took off their shoes and entered the marbled-floored temple, flanked by two elephant ‘guard’ statues and decorated with a beautiful lotus flower mural and made from sandstone carved in India! We listened to a talk about the building, how and why people pray, special features of the mandir and the many Hindu festivals. Finally, we took a tour around the temple to see the different shrines and deities.

Year 4 Tudor Day

We are writing to inform you that Year 4 will be having a Tudor Day on Thursday 20th June as part of the History curriculum on the Tudors. The day will include lots of exciting activities linked to this theme. Children should be dropped off and collected at the usual time and will also have lunch in school as normal. We would like the children to come to school dressed as Tudors: kings, queens, townspeople, servants, knights or famous figures like Shakespeare/ Christopher Columbus etc. We have attached some images to provide you with some costume examples – please don’t feel any pressure to buy anything new.

Kind Regards,

Miss Armstrong and Miss Lewis

Year 4 Trip to Hindu Temple, West Bromwich

Dear Parents/Carers,

As part of the school’s programme of teaching pupils about different places of worship, we have arranged for Year 4 to visit the Shree Krishna Mandir, a Hindu Temple in West Bromwich, to learn about the Hindu faith.   Whales will be visiting the temple on Tuesday 4th June and Dolphins on Thursday 6th June. In order for us to arrive at the venue for 9.30am both classes will need to come in to school by 7.45am on the day of their trip. The coach will depart at 8.00am sharp.

As we will not be returning until the latter end of the school’s lunch break it is likely the school’s lunchtime servery will have ended. Children should therefore bring in a packed lunch for this trip. No glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Pupils eligible for Free School Meals will be given a packed lunch on their return to school.

The cost for this trip is £15.30, which includes transport, insurance and a donation to Shree Krisha Mandir to cover their costs. Payment should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Terrific Tudor Trip for Year 4

What an incredible Tudors trip year 4 have had. We began by immersing ourselves in the museum, where we learned about the fascinating lives of Thomas and Sarah Jones. Our workshop was equally captivating, as we explored Tudor clothing, practiced letter writing with ink and quills, ground herbs to create pomanders, constructed Tudor houses from beams, and sorted through artefacts.

We continued with a tour of Shrewsbury’s Tudor buildings, including iconic landmarks such as the Henry Tudor Inn and Severn Tudor House. As we wandered through charming streets like Barracks Passage, Milk Street, Candle Street, and Butchers Row, we were treated to a showcase of various carpentry styles and the distinctive overhanging jetties.

Year 4 trip to Enginuity

Year 4 had a great time at Enginuity! We had a fantastic time exploring the museum and getting hands-on with our very own jitterbugs, all powered by simple circuits. We learnt about motors and how they make things move. Our visit was a great opportunity to deepen our understanding of electricity and discover fascinating facts about science and engineering.

Check out our jitterbugs in action here

Yr 4 cooks Tudor Pottage

Year 4 have been hard at work in their DT lessons; researching ingredients available in Tudor times, designing and improving an authentic recipe for Tudor pottage, preparing and chopping the herbs and vegetables, and finally adding spices, ready to simmer the stew and enjoy. Afterwards, they rated their dish on taste, texture, appearance and aroma. They had very mixed opinions!

Yr 4 Choral Day at Shrewsbury High School

We had a brilliant time singing our hearts out at Shrewsbury High School. We were joined by three other primary schools for a day of singing, including ‘Stand Up, Shoulders Down’, ‘Hey Mister Miller’ and ‘Try Everything’. We even performed a mini concert for some of our grown-ups at the end of the day. What excellent behaviour and enthusiasm – well done, Year 4!

Science Week 2024

Thank you to Miss Harris for organising the best Science Week!  This year we explored the theme of ‘time’ in outer space with a visiting Planetarium and through a dinosaur and fossil workshop.  We kicked the week off with a fun assembly from Supersonic Sue who runs Science Cub.  Year 3 learnt all about bees and honey with Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Society students, Year 5 delved into colour experiments with Priory School Science Teacher Tamara and Year 6 had Rory and Dr Nichola visit from Lascell’s Science Manufacturing.

Lascells showcased sound waves using a Rubens Tube, looked at radioactivity with a cloud chamber, demonstrated how stars form using a gravity well and the whoosh bottle was perhaps the most exciting of all.

It is great for Year 6 to dip into some KS3 Science and hear from people in the industry ready for their next steps to Secondary School and future careers.

Overall, we’ve had a brilliant TIME!  See the highlights in our showcase video.
