Stone Age Bone Age for Year 3

Year 3 had a fantastic time handling artefacts and experiencing what life was like in the Stone Age at our workshop at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. We almost managed to catch some mammoths!

Year 3 trip to Shrewsbury Museum: Stone Age Workshop

As part of this term’s history curriculum work on The Stone Age,  we have arranged for Year 3 to visit Shrewsbury Museum on Monday 16th September a “Stone Age Bone Age” workshop.  One class will visit the museum in the morning, setting off shortly after morning registration and returning in time for the school lunch break. The other class will leave after afternoon registration and return in time for normal end of day collection.

Pupils should wear school uniform and bring with them a lightweight coat/sunhat (depending on the weather forecast for that day). As they will be doing a fair amount of walking, they will also need to wear comfortable shoes or trainers. Spending money is not required for this trip.

The cost of the trip is £3.80, including the workshop. Payment should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip please. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Year 3 Art trip

Turtles and Starfish had a lovely time at the museum this morning exploring this year’s Shrewsbury Arts Trail exhibition. We were really excited to see the community art project that we had contributed to in a workshop a few weeks ago. We are all artists and now we can say that our art has been exhibited alongside works by the likes of Salvador Dali, Damien Hurst and David Hockney! It really is worth a trip in the holidays to see the exhibition.  Starfish went on to draw flowers in the Dingle afterwards as inspiration for our next art project!

Year 3 Recorder Concert

Year 3 have spent all year learning to play the recorder and their hard work culminated in an excellent recorder concert this morning! Well done to Mrs Porrett for helping the children to make the recorder sound ever so beautiful. We really enjoyed the show.

Athlete Adrian Patrick leads Coleham Circuit Training

As a finale to our Olympics Week we were visited by a third medal winner!  Sprinter Adrian Patrick, a Commonwealth Games Gold winner for 4 x 400m relay led the whole school in circuit training.  These intensive 8 minute sessions saw the children do sit ups, press ups, squats and jumps which we all loved.  The perfect Friday morning work out! He talked to us in assembly about always remembering our vision and dream and not being distracted by behaviours that won’t lead us to our end goal.

What a week of incredible experiences.  Thank you to Miss Lewis for all her hard work and meticulous organisation.

Coleham shines with 2nd place finish at Shrewsbury Area Athletics 2024

An incredibly huge well done to every single child who took part in Area Athletics this evening. It was a huge success to watch you all compete and give it your all. I am so proud of you all for your dedication and team effort—you are truly incredible.
It was amazing to see so many of you take home medals and secure an outstanding 2nd place overall, competing against 12 other schools. Well done, Coleham! You should feel extremely proud of yourselves.
Congratulations once again on your remarkable achievement!

Olympics Showcase Song

Our Olympics Festival Day was fantastic and we finished with a showcase song to parents.  Mrs Porrett led the children with ‘We are Shropshire’ and ‘Wavin Flag’.  There is nothing more powerful than when we come together to sing on mass.  Our Coleham Community all together! A lovely end to the day.

Beth Tweddle visits

Olympic Gymnast Beth Tweddle visited us for our Olympics Week!  What a fantastic day! In a whole school assembly she talked about her gymnastics journey from age 7 to winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in London 2012.  She told us about the importance of fitness and healthy eating and the amazing team around her that contributed to British Gymnastics success.  Year 3 and 4 were lucky enough to have a gymnastics session with Beth before every pupil in school went to collect a signed photograph to take home! An incredible day of memories and all to inspire the children ready for the Paris 2024 Olympics! Beth is flying out to Paris in a few weeks to cover the gymnastics events.

Olympics Festival

What a day!  Miss Lewis organised a day off curriculum for our own Olympics Festival.  It started with a whole school run to Paris, the equivalent of 435 miles.  For 20 minutes all the children and staff ran around the schools grounds and it was such fun!  500 happy faces walking, jogging, running to Paris with the music motivating us.

Out Festival contained sports stations entirely run by our year 6 cohort of Sports Leaders who were fantastic at explaining, demonstrating and encouraging the children.  The younger classes were buddied up with older classes working together which was really lovely to see. The children participated in long jump, high jump, relay hurdles, triple jump, an Olympics quiz, shot put before stopping for an outdoor picnic lunch.  In the afternoon the children played badminton, handball, discus, javelin, relay and we finally finished with a  showcase song to parents.  Phew!! What an action-packed day!  Now we are all ready to watch the Olympics starting on 26th July.

New Gallery Exhibition

The Townsend Art Gallery has a new exhibition! Featuring Year 3’s art created for the Belle Vue Arts Festival along the theme of ‘Treasure’.  These gorgeous Egyptian Pharaoh Portraits, don’t they look stunning?  Well done Turtles and Starfish!

Year 3/4 Sports Day

Year 3/4 Sports Day was a FANTASTIC EVENT! We had the perfect weather, great House Spirit and most importantly everybody enjoyed it!  Thank you to our families for your support.

This year’s winning place was tied between Severn and Darwin with 196 points.  Quarry came 2nd with 206 points and Greyfriars third with 233 points.

Well done to Miss Lewis and Mr Halford for all their hard work.

Little Coders

Year 3 have been working hard on their computer coding this term.  They have been programming traffic lights and learnt how to show and hide different coloured lights and add timers.  They are really getting the hang of it!

BVAF Barnabas Gallery

It’s been brilliant to see lots and lots of classes popping out this week and heading over to the Barnabas Centre Art Exhibition for the Belle Vue Arts Festival.  Every child has produced a  piece of art for the exhibition and Badgers and Foxes Art has been hung by the Greyfriars Bridge.  Not only do the children get to see their own work displayed but also work from other local artists.  Such a variety to see!  The Exhibition is open Saturday 10-4pm if you would like to see your child’s work.

Yr 3 Egyptian Day

Wow, what an incredible day Year 3 have had to complete their topic on the Egyptians!  It was quite scary to find so many children embalmed but don’t worry all their organs are still intact!

Sandwich Tasting

Year 3 have been trying to work out what makes a good sandwich in preparation for our next DT project. Huge thanks to Craig from our local supermarket Asda, who provided us with a variety of sandwiches to taste! Lots of the children tasted new flavours they’d never tried before. We then thought like professionals and designed and made our own healthy, tasty sandwiches to make and eat!

Shrewsbury Arts Trail Community Project

Year 3 had such fun contributing towards an exciting collaborative art installation that will be on display at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery next month. They took part in a mark making workshop run by artist Clare Scarlett, in which they threw, rolled, printed, splattered, stamped, squeegeed and squished paint onto paper! Lots of messy fun was had by all for the wonderful Shrewsbury Arts Trail. The children’s mark making work will be chopped up and then sewn together with lots of other pieces created by members of the community. We can’t wait to see the final results on display!

Yr 3 Liverpool Trip

Year 3 had a brilliant day in Liverpool visiting The World Museum first and then on to The Walker Art Gallery.  The children looked around the Egyptian exhibition and other areas including space, dinosaurs and sea life and took part in an exciting mummification workshop.  In the Art Gallery the children chose their favourite works of art to sketch.  This year we have had a trips focus on galleries as we want all of our pupils throughout school to experience visiting an Art Gallery so its great to see Year 3 venturing further afield to visit a gallery in the city.

Year 3 Trip to Liverpool Museum & Walker Art Gallery

As part of this term’s History curriculum work on the Ancient Egyptians, we have arranged for Year 3 to visit Liverpool Museum and The Walker Art Gallery on Friday 24th May. During their time there the children will take part in an Ancient Egyptian workshop, learning about the mummification process.

We will be leaving school at 8.15am in order to get there at a reasonable time so ask that children arrive at 8.00am that morning. We will return at approximately 5:00pm. If we encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip – no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure. Please also ensure that they wear school uniform and have a lightweight coat with them. We will not be visiting the souvenir shop so no additional spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £14.60, which includes entrance fees/workshops and transport.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Science Week 2024

Thank you to Miss Harris for organising the best Science Week!  This year we explored the theme of ‘time’ in outer space with a visiting Planetarium and through a dinosaur and fossil workshop.  We kicked the week off with a fun assembly from Supersonic Sue who runs Science Cub.  Year 3 learnt all about bees and honey with Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Society students, Year 5 delved into colour experiments with Priory School Science Teacher Tamara and Year 6 had Rory and Dr Nichola visit from Lascell’s Science Manufacturing.

Lascells showcased sound waves using a Rubens Tube, looked at radioactivity with a cloud chamber, demonstrated how stars form using a gravity well and the whoosh bottle was perhaps the most exciting of all.

It is great for Year 6 to dip into some KS3 Science and hear from people in the industry ready for their next steps to Secondary School and future careers.

Overall, we’ve had a brilliant TIME!  See the highlights in our showcase video.

Beekeeping Society

Science Week 2024! Year 3 received a Beekeeping workshop from students at Shrewsbury School.  These pupils are part of the Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Society which is in its 40th year.  The children learnt about different kinds of honey, the hive, protective clothing and how the students look about the bees.  Thank you Shrewsbury School!

Illustrator Talk

To celebrate World Book Week, Years 3 & 4 had a talk from visiting Illustrator Gisela Robinson. Gisela told us about her home country Argentina and how she became an Illustrator later in life after having a family and changing her career.  She showed us some picture book Illustrators from different countries who inspire her and the entire process of sketching and painting for ‘The Book Thief’ book cover she worked on.  Thank you Gisela for sharing your life as an Illustrator with us!

Portrait Exhibition

Year 3 are showcasing their Art in our latest gallery exhibition.  These portraits are based on their artist study work of Frida Kahlo!  Love the contrast of pencil sketching against vibrant, colourful patterns #Mexico inspired.

Yr 3 Class Assemblies

Both Year 3 classes really enjoyed the opportunity to share some of their recent class work with their parents in their class assemblies this week, and they put on a great show. There was dancing, singing, writing, art, science, geography, audience participation and more!

Well done, Year 3!

We showed our wonderful self-portraits

After our trip to the Sea Life Centre and workshop on ‘plastic pollution, we were compelled to write to them regarding the ‘plastic’ in the gift shop.

Sea Life Centre Trip

Year 3 visited the Sealife Centre in Birmingham, as part of their Geography work and took part in a Plastic Pollution workshop.  We have been compelled to write to the Sea Life Centre so they can consider the plastic items for sale in the gift shop.

International Food Market

We like to try new events and we were so pleased to see the turn out for our International Food Market with tasters from Spain, Greece, Germany, China, India, Italy and Poland.  It was lovely to see so many children excited about trying new foods with their families.  Thank you to everybody for coming along and donating items and especially those families who spent time preparing home-made dishes.  Sharing food with the people we love is one of life’s greatest joys and we would love to hear your feedback so we can do more food based events together.

Yr 3 Stoneage Jewellery

For Design and Technology, Year 3 have made Stoneage Jewellery out of natural materials (clay and leather). They are proudly displayed in our Art Gallery.

Christmas Panto!

It was with great organisation that we took the whole school (450 adults and children) to watch Jack and the Beanstalk.  Just the office ladies left back at school manning the fort and eating all the Christmas chocolates!

It was an incredible performance from Brad Fitt and the cast, fabulous scenery and spectacular costumes! The children were all dancing in the rows for finale song.  A real treat for the children to visit the theatre!
