We hope lots of children can have a school lunch on Thursday as this is our School Census Day and the number of meals served will help calculate future meals funding.

Sport Fixtures Minibus Costs

Dear Parents/Carers,

Miss Lewis our PE Co-ordinator arranges a wealth of sporting fixtures across the year and tracks the participation of pupils to ensure that as many KS2 children as possible have a chance to represent Coleham at an event.

School budgets are getting more difficult each year and the cost of hiring minibuses is expensive.  We have asked for a contribution towards this for some time now but wanted to remind parents about this as the transport costs are significant.

We want to maintain this experience for pupils and so if your child is taking part in a sporting fixture which involves transport there is a £3 charge per fixture to pay.  For those pupils eligible for Pupil Premium support this charge will not apply.  If your child is attending a sporting fixture we hope you are able to make payment on Arbor School Shop before the event.  School will still be paying for 70-80% of the minibus costs but every little helps us.

We hope you will support us.

Kind regards,

Miss Othen & Miss Lewis

School Business Manager & PE Co-ordinator

Young Voices Club Trip

Dear Parents and Carers,

Young Voices 2025

As a member of the Coleham Young Voices after school club your child is invited to take part in the amazing ‘Young Voices’ concert on Wednesday 15th Jan 2025, at BP Pulse (previously known as Resorts World), Birmingham, where children from many schools come together in one concert venue to collectively sing.  You can find out more about this event by clicking on the following link: The Largest Children’s Choir in the World | Young Voices  There is a video clip part way down the page which gives you a taster of what the children are likely experience if they take part.  It is an experience not to be missed!

Due to the nature of the event, we expect full commitment from everyone taking part: both in attending the after school club for rehearsals and in learning the words – both at school and at home (if you have SPOTIFY, search for Young Voices 2025 and you’ll find the playlist).

Taking part in the event means that the children will have quite a long day and a late night on 15th January: they will be travelling to and from the venue by coach, leaving school around 11.30am/noon, and returning to school around 10.30pm.

The cost of the trip is £28.60. This includes the cost for your child’s place and the coach travel, payable via your child’s Arbor account.

At this point in time, we need to know numbers of children attending and ask that you confirm whether your child will be taking part by Friday 27th September 2025, however we do not need payment by this date. Please notify the school office (either by phone message or email) by no later than 10.00am on Friday 27th if your child will NOT be taking part in the Birmingham event. Many thanks for your cooperation.

Further details will be shared once we have final numbers.  This will include information about tickets that parents are able to purchase and exact timings for the day.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/Visits and Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

We really hope that your child will be able to join us for Young Voices, it is a terrific day out and one that the children will never forget.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Hilbert

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

Thank you to everyone who helped out at the September Social last weekend – it was great to see so many of our families supporting the school and organising stalls, helping out and making Saturday a huge success.  Thank you also to everyone who came along to enjoy the day!

We’ve had another busy week at school this week as we really start to get going with the Autumn Term – the last 3 weeks feel like a lifetime already, which is a good thing!

We’re already looking forward to next week with a variety of trips happening, and I am also looking forward to the first new parent open day for those families looking for a school for September 2025.  If you know anyone in the market for an EYFS place in September, give them a nudge!  Please also pass on the 2 job adverts on to anyone you know that would be a great addition to our staff team.  Details are on the front page of the website.

Have a lovely weekend!

Parent Letter – School Reminders

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you to everyone for such a FANTASTIC start to the year!  We always appreciate our families’ support with keeping Coleham running smoothly and you have all done a great job at helping us out with these three important things:

  • Showing up to school
  • Being on time
  • Wearing the right uniform

These are three simple things, but they go a long way to helping school remain orderly and calm which in turn allows us to provide your children with the best possible school experience.

Attendance

School attendance at Coleham was particularly excellent last year – almost three-quarters of the school had above 95% attendance.  Encouraging strong attendance is not about school data: we don’t praise 100% attendance as if avoiding bugs is some kind of skill, but we do know that children with higher attendance often do better in the long-run.  If your child is unwell and unable to come into school, we trust you to make the right call.  If you are unsure or would appreciate some guidance, please get in touch with us.  Occasionally, children can become poorly during the school day if this were to happen, we will get in touch with you to make arrangements for them to go home.

Our Trust’s attendance policy, with specific information relevant to Coleham Primary School, can be found on our school website by clicking on the following link:

Attendance Policy & Appendices – Coleham Primary School

Below are some highlighted details you might find particularly useful:

Leaves of Absence

Any requests for an absence from school (but not medical appointments) require a Leave of Absence form to be completed.  The form has been updated for this year, so please use the form on the school website, this can be found via the link above and a copy of it is also enclosed with this letter.

Medical appointments

We understand that it can be very difficult to get medical appointments at convenient times in this day and age, but if possible, appointments outside of the school day are very helpful.  Please email the absence email address to let us know of upcoming appointments.

Reminder from the School Office

If your child is unable to come to school, please email us each morning before 9:00am.  The policy says to do this by 9:30am at the latest, but knowing before registers are taken is very helpful.  Please use the absence email address below, and also tell us some details.  We are held to account for absences, so we need to know what the illness is.

absence@col.318education.co.uk

If your child is struggling to attend school for any reason, please get in touch so we can help.  When attendance goes under 90%, we may get in touch with families to offer any support that may be appropriate, and we will always get in touch after 5 days of continuous absence to be compliant with our safeguarding obligations.

Contacting Us

Please keep talking to us; tell us if we have done a good job or how things could be better!  Let us know if there’s anything we can support with: if you are experiencing any worries at home, or as a family, please talk with class teachers or our Pastoral Lead, Mrs Nash.  Details of who and how to contact us are on our website:

https://colehamprimary.co.uk/home/about/find-us/

Our website is live and up-to-date and the first port of call for any query you may have.  The Parents’ Area section contains all Letters Home, Weekly Newsletters, Term Dates and a Calendar of events; and the Classroom pages show you staff working with your children, trip dates, PE dates etc.  Please do check as it really is our virtual office, we post to the website daily.

School Day Timings

The school gates open at 8:40am and the school day officially begins at 8:50am when your children’s teachers come out to collect the classes for registration so please ensure your children are ready to enter the classroom at 8.50am.

After 8:50am when the children have gone into class and the site starts to be secured for the start of the day,  your child will need to enter through the main front door.  Here they will be greeted by office staff who will assist them to sign in electronically.  This sign in is required as it feeds into our registration system.  We record a Late mark from 9:00am to 9:15am and if you arrive after 9:15am, this is recorded as an absence for the morning session. If you are finding being on time a challenge, please get in touch and we can offer some support.

We have been really grateful to everyone for clearing the school site quickly at the end of the day.  For safeguarding reasons and security of after school clubs, we must have the site locked up by 3:30pm and the road opened to traffic, so please do remind your children not to stay and play for too long on the equipment.

Without Mr Jones opening and locking the site, we have been incredibly grateful for your help these first few weeks so that Miss Othen, Miss Turner and I can do those jobs and get back into school for the day as quickly and efficiently as possible.  The start and end-of-day routine has been a DREAM so far.

I’ve really enjoyed the first few weeks of school: what a community we have.  We couldn’t do the things we do without your help.  Thank you!

Yours sincerely,

Tom Larkham

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

We’ve had another busy week and it’s been lovely to see all the children settling in more and getting to grips with the new school year.  The EYFS children have done really well in their first week of full days, and we are very proud of our Year 6s stepping up to be the role models they need to be more.  We have had successful House Captain elections (more on that next week) and we are all gearing up for tomorrow’s September Social!

We’ve been so grateful to everyone for helping make the start of the year so smooth and using the various systems that are in place to make sure everyone is where they need to be: we wouldn’t be able to do that without your help, so thank you!  Please keep an eye out for a separate letter about school attendance with some useful information – there have been a couple of changes to the policy over the summer so it is worth a read.

Also included in this newsletter are the Christmas Nativity dates (I know, but it comes along quickly!) so do please make a note and get time booked off work if you can!

We hope to see lots of you there tomorrow – have a lovely weekend!

We will not be going to the Christmas Pantomime this year; we plan to go every 2 or 3 years so that children experience this as a special treat during their time with us.

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

Welcome back to school and the 2024-25 academic year!

Coming back is always a bit daunting, especially after a good summer break, but it’s also great to get back to a normal routine, see everyone’s happy faces and to begin a new adventure.

Well done to EVERYONE for such a fantastic start to the school year, especially to our newest members in EYFS!  They have started their school journey in the best way possible and I’m so excited to see what they can show us over the next few months.

Thank you, also, to all our families that have helped to make the mornings and end-of-day routines run so smoothly.  Arriving on time and clearing the site in good time has allowed to keep the school site secure ready for the start of the day and for after school club at the end of the day.  Usually the first week back is a bit hectic, but it’s been incredibly smooth this week – thank you!

Please keep an eye out for messages about the upcoming September Social: it’s often the biggest and best community event of the year!  All are welcome, so please share the date with anyone else you can think of.

Curriculum bulletins: the Autumn 2024 Curriculum bulletins can all be found on the school website on the class pages.  Click on the ‘Classrooms’ tab to find your children’s classes.

One final reminder: if you need to get in touch about an important issue, please use the school email address: admin@col.318education.co.uk – messages sent to staff via Class Dojo are not monitored as regularly, and may not be seen in good time.

I hope you all have a super weekend, and we’ll hopefully be celebrating a Shrewsbury Town win on Saturday!

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Here we are at the end of another successful academic year.  It’s always a funny time of the year: no one could imagine the final day being here 11 months ago when we started in September, but SO much has happened!  Children in EYFS starting school are now fully fledged; Year 6 are at the end of their primary school journeys; 100s of children enjoying success in their classes and wondering what the next year holds, and I have managed a full year as Headteacher without burning the school down! It’s a happy time to reflect on everything that’s come our way and everything we have achieved or overcome together.

We are saying goodbye to 4 incredible members of staff who have been instrumental in forging Coleham’s place in our community, but also saying hello to new faces who will carry the torch onwards.  Change is part of life and that’s what we all need to embrace to make the future strong.  We want to celebrate those moving on, children and adults, as new adventures beckon and exciting new things are yet to be discovered.  Good luck to everyone leaving Coleham school today: Coleham will always be part of you and you will always be part of Coleham!

As Chilli says to Bluey in ‘Camping’: it’s sad when good people come into your life, stay for a bit, but then have to leave isn’t it?  But the part they were here for was good, and maybe that’s what makes it worthwhile.

Thank you to everyone who has said hello on the playground this year, supported us and helped to make COleham School such a lovely place to be.

Have a super summer, and we will see you in September!

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

We’ve had a very busy week this week with a successful transition day and much, much more!  This afternoon we were treated to the Year 6 Leavers’ assembly – not a dry eye in the house!  What a hard-working group of children they have been – we wish them all the best for secondary when they leave us at the end of next week.

Year 6 have also had their SATs results this week, and we are incredibly proud of them all.  Everyone has had something to be proud of and it’s great to see the children work hard to achieve goals and be successful – well done everyone!

Mr Cooper, the Headteacher of Thomas Adams Secondary School, had a wonderful time at Coleham this week and has asked me to share with you all his thanks and gratitude to everyone who spoke with him and made him feel so welcomed.  He has been incredibly positive about everything at Coleham.

Have a super weekend and enjoy the football.  It’s coming home!

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

What a super Olympic Week we have had this week – a huge thank you to Miss Lewis for putting together such an amazingly inspirational week of visitors and activities.

I have spent many hours and hours pouring over all your children’s reports over the last week and have thoroughly enjoyed reading such lovely comments: your teachers really know your children well.  End-of-year reports are always a big job, but it is one of my favourite jobs of the year!  Reports will be coming out on Monday 8th, so please do make sure your child hands you an envelope!

For Wednesday and Thursday next week, I will be at Thomas Adams School in Wem, and their Headteacher, Mr Mark Cooper will be at Coleham.  This is part of our ‘Head Swap’ activities where Headteachers across our Trust spend time in each others’ schools speaking to children and staff, observing lessons and finding out what it is like to be part of another school.  This is always a fascinating and interesting experience with lots to take in and learn.  Please do take the time to say hello to Mr Cooper at the school gates on Wednesday and Thursday.

Enjoy this week’s newsletter and have a lovely weekend!

Mr Jones retires

Our legendry Caretaker Mr Jones is retiring from Coleham School.  There is no job too small or too big for Mr Jones especially when it comes to dressing up and appearing in our crazy videos!  To mark the occasion, we will be asking all staff and children to come dressed up as Mr Jones or one of his many alter egos from Coleham videos past aka The Grinch, Snowman, James Bond, Simon Cowell, Disco outfits, Liverpool supporter or his classic attire of caretaker overalls. With 420 Mr Jones lookalikes on site we should get plenty of work done!  Shhh its a surprise!

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a week!  We certainly picked the right days this week for our Sports Days!  A huge well done to all the children taking part: there were some excellent moments of sporting behaviour and it was wonderful to see the children cheering on their Houses and celebrating the victories of others, too.  Well done also to Miss Lewis who has been busy organising with Mr Halford.  Not only that, but our crack team of Year 6 helpers did a fantastic job of running it all so smoothly.  Finally, congratulations to Severn and Darwin who, out of the 3 events, had a victory each and a shared victory!

More sport is coming next week – it’s Olympics Week!  Lots of exciting activities and special guests to come…

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Dear Parents & Carers,

It finally feels like summer and school is feeling just as sun-shiney (if that’s a useable adjective) and happy.  Lots of fun happening this week: Year 4’s Tudor Day (poor Mr Jones!), the smoothie bike, an art gallery trip, a WONDERFUL EYFS assembly and a discos tonight – so much going on!

Next week we gear up into proper summer term activities: sports days!  Following that we have our Olympic Week with some very exciting visitors and events planned.

Year 5 parents: please have a read of our ‘Welcome to Year 6’ event, which is happening on 10th July.  This will be a great opportunity to get to know a little more about Year 6 and everything that goes with it.

IMPORTANT GATE INFO

From Monday 24th, the only gates being opened for families to enter the school will be:

  • The corner gate (opposite the butcher’s)
  • The main gate (at the front of the school)

Children will all line up in the usual places – this is a measure to increase security of the school site at drop-off times.

Enjoy your weekends, everyone!

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been another busy week in school with trips out, Shropshire Sings, sport and lots of art going on.  The children have really enjoyed visiting the Barnabas art exhibition and seeing their own work on display.

The summer feels like it is moving along with the start of the Euros today – all the classes have had a team allocated to them so we’ll all be looking out for our teams’ progress!  I have been given Italy this time round so I’m hoping for great things…  In assembly this week we talked about the benefits of exceptional teamwork, and I showed them the famous Brazil team goal from the 1970 World Cup and also the individual brilliance of Gazza’s goal against Scotland in Euro ’96 – lots of children have talked to me about those goals and working as a team, which is great.

With any luck, the weather will take the hint about it being summer so we can properly look forward to our own sporting activities, with Sports Days happening the week after next (week of the 24th June) and our Olympic week the week after.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the football if you’re watching!
