Showcase Concert: 4th July

Dear Parent/Carer

We are holding our annual “Showcase Concert” at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 4th July in the main school hall.

It is a great event – children who have music lessons in school through the Shropshire Music Service, and children who have lessons outside school, are invited to perform for us.  The audience is always very appreciative and the atmosphere is relaxed and very supportive.

To register your child’s participation in this event, click on the link below and complete the virtual reply slip –  by no later than 9.00am on Monday 27th June please, so that we have time to organise the running order for this event.

https://forms.office.com/e/w7MsxB8f5A

Children who are performing may need some time for “tuning up” before the concert starts so could they please be at school for around 5.45pm-5.50pm? Thank you.

I do hope you can join us for this very enjoyable evening.

Yours sincerely

Headteacher Message

It was wonderful to see all the children so involved and enthusiastic about our Coleham Coronation day today!  They have made some wonderful crowns and you could feel the positivity everywhere you looked.  Our Coronation Coleham’s Got Talent show was FANTASTIC, (despite the weather drenching us on our conga!) and the performance at the end to parents was really special.  It’s moments like that which really show what Coleham is all about.

Other highlights included a visit from our Town Crier, and an extra special visit (and late entry) to the talent show from The Spice Girls!  Posh, Baby, Scary, Sporty and Geri were all there, which was a real treat.  Nearly 30 years on from their first show, they can still perform!

Well done to all our super Year 2s who took on their KS1 SATs tests this week, and good luck to our fantastic Year 6s who will be taking on their own SATs tests next week.  It’s really important to us that the children feel relaxed and ready to do their best, and that they feel proud of their achievements, whatever the outcome.  To help them be prepared, we are treating them to a pastry breakfast at 9:00 am every day next week.

I hope you all enjoy the long weekend, and we will see you back in school on Tuesday 9th May.

Re: Breakfast and After School Club Prices

Dear Parents/Carers,

We last increased the Breakfast and After School Club prices in 2020.

We are always sensitive to any costs that our families incur and we never like to increase prices however, we must also balance this with the pressures of the school budget.  Of course, over the last two years there has been an increase in wages, pension and food and energy costs which now need to be factored in.  The price increase of 50 pence will take effect after May half term.

Therefore, the cost of Breakfast Club from Monday 5th June will be £4.00 and the cost of After School Club will now be £10.25.   We believe that this is still good value for the childcare provided.  I hope that you are able to continue to benefit from these clubs and can support us in this decision.

Yours sincerely,

Ms C Jones

Year 5 Viking Day

Dear Parents/Carers,

Year 5 will be having a Viking Day in school on Thursday 18th May as part of the History curriculum on the Vikings and Anglo Saxons.

The day will include lots of exciting activities linked to this theme.  The children are welcome to dress as Vikings: Viking warriors, shield-maidens, sailors or villagers etc. Please don’t feel any pressure to buy anything, raid your wardrobes for old shirts to use as tunics, sandals or boots and furry jackets.

Year 5 really enjoyed this last year, below are some photos to give you some outfit inspiration.

Kind Regards,

Miss Armstrong, Mrs Long & Mr Russell

Year 5 Trip- Exotic Zoo Wildlife Park, Telford

Dear Parent/Carer

As part of this term’s science curriculum work on animals and their habitats, we have arranged for Year 5 to visit Telford Exotic Zoo on Wednesday 17th May.   We will be leaving school around  9:15am, following morning registration, and return around 3:00pm, in time for normal collection.

Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink for this trip. Those pupils entitled to free school meals will be given a packed lunch by our school meals provider before departure. Please also ensure that they wear school uniform and have a lightweight coat with them. We will not be visiting the souvenir shop so no additional spending money is required.

The cost of the trip is £10.00, which includes entrance fees/workshops, transport and insurance.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s ParentPay account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding these trips. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Hilbert

Coleham Coronation Event

Dear Parents/Carers,

We will be marking the Coronation of King Charles III in school on Friday 5th May 2023.

This will be a NON-UNIFORM Day and children are invited to dress in red, white and blue clothes or smart party clothes of their choice.

We will be having fun making crowns for a school House Competition.  At lunchtime, we will have an ‘outdoor dining room’ on the playground festooned with bunting and music.  This will be a special picnic lunch menu with special guests invited.  Please see the menu below.

In the afternoon we will be organising a ‘Coleham Conga’ and a royal edition of Britain’s Got Talent!  Each class will be asked to submit an act.

Mrs Porrett is working on a coronation song with the children and you are all invited to School Field to watch the children perform this.  We will open the field gate at 2:50pm for parents and singing will start at 3:00pm. (this is entirely weather dependent).  You may then collect your children at the normal times, from the normal picking up locations.

As usual, we will film all the best bits in a medley celebration video for you all.

Kind regards,

Claire Jones

CLASS MIXING (EYFS / Year 2 / Year 4)

At Coleham, we mix our classes at the end of EYFS, Year 2 and Year 4.  Soon, our staff will begin the process of organising the new classes for the next academic year and we want to let you know about the process and its benefits so that you are more informed and better able to support your child if they have any anxieties about the process.

Mixing the 2 classes widens our children’s social horizons, allowing them to make new realtionships with children they perhaps don’t know so well.  Eventually, all the children will be forced to make new relationships when they transition to secondary school, and we find that children from Coleham, and other schools that mix, fare better when this time comes.

Many children have made new friendships after a class mix, whilst retaining and strengthening existing friendships.  Making these new relationships (including those between children’s families) helps to further grow and strengthen our school community.  In addition, there may be negative relationships between some children in-class that can be broken.

It is natural for you children to be wary about being in a ‘new’ class, however, please remember that your children already know all (or most) of the children in their year group.  For some, it can feel as if they are moving to a completely new class in a new school with new, unknown children, but this is not the case.  Any children in their current class who are mixed into a different class will still be there at playtimes, and they will remain with many of the children they are currently with, whatever the mix.

The process of mixing is not a light undertaking.  We know the children really well here at Coleham, and we have a good understanding of the relationships in and out of class.  When mixing classes, we do not rely on any one source of information, but instead use a combination of soures to ensure that the best mixes are arrived at.  To find the best mixes:

  • we consult the children in a child-friendly way over their preferences;
  • we make use of ‘sociograms’, where relationships are mapped out through survey data;
  • we work as a team to use our professional knowledge of relationships, both social and work-wise;
  • we will also consult parents.

I attach a link to an optional form where you can, confidentially, share any strong feelings you may have about the makeup of the mixed classes; the form is not compulsory.  Please be assured that we will seriously consider any parental recommendations or feelings, but cannot guarantee anything at this point.  We are most likely fully aware of positive and negative relationships that your children have, but if you are concerned, I recommend you fill the form out.  If you choose to use the forms, please fill out on

EYFS Class Mixing Form

 YEAR 2 Mixing Form

 YEAR 4 Class Mixing Form

These forms will automatically close at 4:00 pm on Friday 28th April.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do get in touch.

Year 1 Phonics Screening check

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 1 Phonics Screening check

In June, all Year 1 children in England will take part in the phonics screening check. Within the screening check the children will be asked to read 40 words, some of which will be real words and some will be pseudo words. The children may also refer to pseudo words as ‘alien’ words. This screening check will take place on a 1:1 basis with either myself or Miss Cox. There is no time limit to the phonics screening check but it should take no longer than 10 minutes. The children are taught phonics daily and so preparation for this is already in place so please don’t worry about this.

Here is a link to phonics play PhonicsPlay – Resources (www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources) where you can play Dragons Den, Buried treasure and Picnic on Pluto without subscribing. These games focus on real and pseudo words and will be a good way to practise at home too. We will be sending a copy of the flashcards home by the end of the week. Please continue to read with your child daily – even if it is just for 5-10 minutes – and then write a comment in the diary. This is a perfect way for you to help your child develop their reading skills and continue their reading journey to becoming fluent readers.

Helpful hints when reading:

Explore the text – Talk about the front cover; read the title; make predictions; read the blurb; discuss the illustrations. Who is the author?

Phonics check – Open up the book; discuss any digraphs the book aims to practise. Are there any non-decodable words? Talk about their meaning if necessary.

Pre-read – Read the book to your child then have them read it with you. Talk about what you’ve read.

Your child’s turn – Have your child read the book aloud to you. Ensure they apply reading behaviours accurately. Encourage silent blending where possible. Encourage fluency and expression when appropriate. Make your child aware of punctuation; encourage them to use it to improve pace and fluency.

Comprehension – Ask questions about the text to ensure your child has understood what they have read. What and when questions are fine, but aim for open ended questions too such as: why do you think …? How would you….?

Quizzes – Sometimes there is a quiz at the end of the book. Or you could make up your own.

Follow up – Provide follow up activities suggested by the book that link to the themes and develop your child’s understanding.

Please do get in contact with us if you have any questions as we will be happy to help.

Kind regards

Mrs Young

KS1 and Reading Leader

Parent Survey 2023 letter and results

Dear Parents/Carers,

Many thanks to those parents who completed our Parent Questionnaire earlier this term.  We have looked closely at the questionnaires and comments which we received (110 replies were received) and we have considered our response.  Overall, we were delighted with the very positive response we received from parents, with 99% of parents saying that they would recommend our school to others.

In considering our reaction, we have added up the responses that were either “strongly agree” or “agree” and presented the information accordingly at the end of the letter.   We are very pleased where results are over 90%,  but where results are below 90% (as they are for 2 questions), we are keen to review our processes and see where iprovements can be made.  We have also considered the comments we received from you all regarding how we can further improve and, of course, the many positive comments we received, which were a delight to read.  Thank you to those parents who put their names to comments shared: this enables us to follow up any concerns personally if we feel this is appropriate.

I have taken each question in turn, where the % of parents agreeing to the statement was lower than 90%, and I have hopefully provided you with a satisfactory response, explanation and/or reassurance of our determination to improve:

  1. My child has been bullied and it was dealt with effectively

The % of parents agreeing to this comment was 74%: a signficant improvement on last year’s data, but still not as strong as we would like.  A total of 84% of you stated that your children have not experienced bullying.

It is important to know that incidences of bullying are rare but they do occasionally occur at Coleham.  When they do occur, they are always taken very seriously and dealt with in line with our anti-bullying procedure.  We constantly teach our children to treat others with kindness and respect, in line with our 3 school rules.  Sometimes, however, children can make mistakes.  This is part of growing up and school is a safe environment in which they can occasionally make mistakes.  When children make the wrong choice, there is a consequence and we support all parties, where necessary, to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.  Incidents of unkindness, whilst dealt with robustly, are usually not defined as bullying and sometimes the word “bullying,” which is clearly very emotive, can be used incorrectly to describe a particular behaviour by parents and children.  Bullying is when the unkind behaviours do not stop and often involve groups and/or power imbalances.

If you are concerned about how your child is being treated by others, e would urge you to come and talk to your child’s class teacher in the first instance.  We will then be able to investigate situations and provide consequences and support, where necessary.  It is not always appropriate to inform parents of the exact actions that we have taken in relation to sanctions given to other children, however, please trust that we do deal with behavioural and bullying incidents in a consistent and robust manner.

  1. When I have raised concerns with the school they have been dealt with properly.

15% of respondants to the survey disagreed with the above statement.

If you have any concerns with school, we would urge you to come and talk to your child’s class teacher in the first instance: many issues can be easily resolved quickly.  If you feel that this needs to be escalated to a member of the Senior Leadership Team, then your child’s class teacher will immediately refer the issue onto the phase leader and/or Mr Larkham or me.  We take all concerns very seriously and always take time to investigate situations carefully before taking appropriate and robust action

If you do not feel that a concern has been dealt with appropriately, please do get in touch with the school office as soon as possible and a member of the Senior Leadership Team will contact you regarding your concern.

Within the comments section, a number of parents/carers commented on our communication systems, both positively and with some suggestions.  We know there is so much to remember as a parent about events in school and so we want to provide useful information to you in a more streamlined approach.  We have therefore started to produce a weekly newsletter, which links directly to our school website and provides all of the important information regarding dates/reminders for the week ahead, and also some information about what your children have been doing at school this week.  Individual teachers will also continue to post information on DoJo regarding your children’s learning.

There were also a small number of comments raised regarding after school EXTRA-CURRICULAR clubs.  We always aim to run an array of after school clubs because it is really important that the children all have the chance to pursue their interests and talents, thus developing the whole child.  As you know, we have improved the booking system so more spaces are available, but some parents commented that the release time of clubs is difficult for working parents to book spaces.  Moving forward, we will therefore be releasing club spaces at 6pm and hope that this will address these concerns.

Finally, there were some interesting comments regarding our rewards system at Coleham.  It is difficult to please all parents and children with regard to rewards, and it is the inherent nature of reward systems that they need refreshing from time to time so that they remain both appealing to the children, and fair.  With this in mind, we will be seeking the views of the children next term and looking to further develop our reward system for September.

Overall, the feedback that you have provided to us was overwhelmingly positive with many, many comments about the strong community ethos of the school.  Our aim has always been to educate the whole child providing them with a broad and rich curriculum and it is wonderful to read that so many of you feel we are doing a good job!  The many positive comments and praise for our dedicated and hard working staff team were also much appreciated.  We have, of course, shared your comments with the whole team.   Thank you, once again, for your valuable feedback on our Parent Survey.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Jones

Headteacher

Swimming – Year 6 Elephants

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of the National Curriculum your child will be going to the Quarry Swimming Baths for swimming lessons.  Each lesson will take place on a Wednesday afternoon for 10 weeks, starting 19th April and ending 12th July (inclusive) excluding 17th May (Pioneer), 31st May (Half Term) and 7th June (Bikeability training).

Mr Edwards will walk the children to and from The Quarry Swimming Baths: not only will it provide pupils and staff with a pleasant walk through our lovely park, it will also mean that no funding will be sought from parents to cover transport costs.

Please can you complete a Swimming Ability form for your child so we can organise the groups most effectively. A link to the form is given below:

https://forms.office.com/e/DBERiBw1Xw

We would be grateful if you could complete this form by no later than Friday 14th April in order that we have sufficient time to compile the information received.

Please could you ensure your child remembers to bring their swimming costume (no bikinis please), goggles and towel in on the day they go swimming, as they will only be disappointed if they have to stay behind or sit and watch! Thank you.

Mr Venn’s Farewell Event

Join us to say farewell and Good Luck to Mr Venn at his last Shrewsbury Junior Parkrun.

It’s a 2km lap starting near the tennis courts and children aged 4-14 can take part for free and parents often run with their youngest children or cheer along the route.  We have arranged it with the organisers so that on the 26th March 2023 there will be a Coleham School Takeover event.

MEET AT THE BANDSTAND AFTERWARDS FOR A PICNIC BREAKFAST IF YOU WOULD LIKE TOO

We would LOVE it if we could boost the profile of Junior Park Run within our Coleham School community, whilst at the same time celebrating everything Mr Venn has done for our school, children and their families.
