EYFS Trip to Holy Trinity

In EYFS we have been learning about places that are special to people in R.E.  After talking about how Churches are special to Christians, we decided to take a walk to our local church, Holy Trinity, to have a look at the building and some of its key features.

EYFS Trip to Shrewsbury Castle

Today the children in EYFS went on a trip to Shrewsbury Castle. We have been learning about castles during our ‘Long Ago, Far Away’ topic in class. The children enjoyed exploring the features of the castle, making observations, drawing the castle and looking for a Princess.

Class Mixing – Year R/Year 2/Year 4

Dear Parents/Carers,

At Coleham, we mix our classes at the end of EYFS, Year 2 and Year 4.  Soon, our staff will begin the process of organising the new classes for the next academic year and we want to let you know about the process and its benefits so that you are more informed and better able to support your child if they have any anxieties about the process.

Mixing the 2 classes widens our children’s social horizons, allowing them to make new realtionships with children they perhaps don’t know so well.  Eventually, all the children will be forced to make new relationships when they transition to secondary school, and we find that children from Coleham, and other schools that mix, fare better than others when this time comes.

Our experience tells us that many children have made new friendships after a class mix, whilst retaining and strengthening existing friendships.  Making these new relationships (including those between children’s families) helps to further grow and strengthen our school community.  In addition, there may be negative relationships between some children in-class that can be broken.

It is natural for your children to be wary about being in a ‘new’ class, however, please remember that your children already know all (or most) of the children in their year group.  For some, it can feel as if they are moving to a completely new class in a completely new school with new, unknown children, but this is not the case.  Any children in their current class who are mixed into a different class will still be there at playtimes, and they will remain with many of the children they are currently with, whatever the mix.

The process of mixing is not a light undertaking.  We know the children really well here at Coleham, and we have a good understanding of the relationships in and out of class.  When mixing classes, we do not rely on any one source of information, but instead use a combination of soures to ensure that the best mixes are arrived at.  To find the best mixes:

  • we consult the children in a child-friendly way over their preferences;
  • we make use of ‘sociograms’, where relationships are mapped out through survey data;
  • we work as a team to use our professional knowledge of relationships, both social and work-wise;
  • we will also consult parents.

I attach a link to an optional form where you can, confidentially, share any strong feelings you may have about the makeup of the mixed classes; the form is not compulsory.  Please be assured that we will seriously consider any parental recommendations or feelings, but cannot guarantee anything at this point.  We are most likely already fully aware of positive and negative relationships that your children have, but if you are concerned, I recommend you fill the form out.  If you choose to use the forms, please fill out one form per child.

Storyteller Visit

For World Book Week local Storyteller Sal Tongue visited all our EYFS, Yr 1 and Yr 2 classes. With a medley of stories, drawing and singing the children followed the key to unlock the story.  There was even a Goldilocks and the three bears rap song.  Thank you Sal for your imagination and energy! A lovely way to end our special week dedicated to reading.

Sculpture Walk

In Art this half term, the children in Reception are learning about sculptures. Today we enjoyed walking through town to find different sculptures. They were excited to find many different sculptures on the buildings throughout town as well as larger sculptures such as the Charles Darwin statue at the library, Darwin’s Gate in Mardol and The Evolution sculpture.

Dear Zoo

Today the children in EYFS visited the Theatre Severn to watch Dear Zoo. We have been exploring this book in our Literacy sessions and it was wonderful to see the story brought to life!

International Food Market

We like to try new events and we were so pleased to see the turn out for our International Food Market with tasters from Spain, Greece, Germany, China, India, Italy and Poland.  It was lovely to see so many children excited about trying new foods with their families.  Thank you to everybody for coming along and donating items and especially those families who spent time preparing home-made dishes.  Sharing food with the people we love is one of life’s greatest joys and we would love to hear your feedback so we can do more food based events together.

International Day in EYFS

We had so much fun celebrating different cultures and traditions of America, Spain and Italy today.

We had visits from parents, Spanish dancing, songs with Mrs Porrett and even some food tasting in the hall after school.

EYFS Parents Writing Meeting

Dear Parent/Carer,

EYFS Parents Writing Meeting: Monday 29th January 2024

On Monday 29th January we will be holding a session for parents on the development of Early Writing. The aims of the session are as follows:

• Provide parents with more information on how writing develops in Reception
• To share with parents what is expected in writing by the end of the Reception Year
• To share strategies for supporting writing at home
At Coleham school we feel partnership with parents is important, and we recognise the difference we can make to our children when we work together effectively. We would therefore truly value your participation by attending this event. In order to ensure that the event is as accessible to as many of you as possible, we will be running the event at two separate times. We therefore request that you complete and return the
slip no later than Friday 26th January so we can cater for the correct amount of people.

The event will take place in the School Hall, so please head straight to the main reception 5 minutes prior to your selected time.
Many thanks,
Miss Harris

EYFS Trip to Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury

We have arranged for EYFS to visit Theatre Severn on Friday 2nd February to see an afternoon performance of “Dear Zoo”.

DEAR ZOO

They will be setting off from school shortly after afternoon registration and expect to return to school around 3.30pm, depending on the traffic. If they encounter any significant delay on our return journey, we will do our best to keep you informed.

The cost of the trip is £15.50, including transport costs and tickets.  Payment for this trip should be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the trip. Although costs for trips are voluntary, in reality the school has no other means of funding them. We hope that everyone can contribute to the trip in some way.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

EYFS River Trip

On Friday the children went on a walk through the Quarry Park to learn more about their local environment. They all enjoyed learning about the River Severn and our local bridges. Oh, and we may have stopped for a biscuit too!

Christmas Panto!

It was with great organisation that we took the whole school (450 adults and children) to watch Jack and the Beanstalk.  Just the office ladies left back at school manning the fort and eating all the Christmas chocolates!

It was an incredible performance from Brad Fitt and the cast, fabulous scenery and spectacular costumes! The children were all dancing in the rows for finale song.  A real treat for the children to visit the theatre!

Merry Christmas to you all

Christmas wouldn’t be complete for us without our Staff Christmas Video!  This started during Covid so we could connect with our families and children at home but has become a much loved Coleham tradition for us all.  It’s our special gift to the children and a way to say Merry Christmas to the many people in our community that help us make our school what it is, to our parents, volunteers, local shop keepers, club leaders, pre-schools, resident artists and musicians and all the organisations we partner with.

Watching the children’s reaction on Monday was priceless.  We are always teaching our children to be creative, try something new and give it a go, so it’s great for them to see our staff be a little silly and push themselves outside of their comfort zone (of course some of us love the limelight, mentioning no names!)

This year’s video backing scenes have been created using the children’s art work.  The children thought they were entering into a Christmas card competition.

We really hope you enjoy this year’s production and it goes without saying that this film would not be possible without the incredibly talented, legendary Mr Williams who directs and edits us all to perfection.  Always smiling, keeping us calm and on a very tight filming schedule!  Bravo Mr Williams!

Coleham Christmas Parade 2023

Well it didn’t rain on our Parade! Thank you to the special folk in our community for dressing up as the nativity cast, to the musicians and of course our furry, four legged friends for entertaining us.  It was great to see so many parents spectate.  The real Santa came to visit with our very own Mrs Claus.  Did you spot our favourite Caretaker from Boogie Wonderland?

Nativity Animals

Our Reception children had a lovely visit from all the nativity animals that feature in The Christmas Story.  We met Ed the Turkey, Tiny and Candyfloss the Sheep, Brownie the Hen, Racket the Donkey and Emilio the rat. We had a rotation of activities with each group making crowns, sequencing The Christmas Story, dressing up and performing the story and meeting the animals who might have been in the stable with Mary and Joseph.  What fun!

EYFS & KS1 Nativity

EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 put on a beautiful nativity performance for us all this week. Performing three shows is impressive at any age so well done to our youngest children!  It left us feeling all Christmassy and very proud of you.  A massive thank you to Holy Trinity for their hospitality and letting us perform in their beautiful church. It is such a special place to perform.

EYFS explore our local community

In Geography this week, the children in Reception have been discussing our local community. The children enjoyed exploring our local community and identified many key features, such as: the shops, Greyfriars bridge, the River Severn and Holy Trinity Church.

Nursery Rhyme Week

Foxes and Badgers have had a brilliant time celebrating World Nursery Rhyme week!  Nursery Rhymes are so important to help develop speech and language and early reading so it was an event we really wanted to get involved with!  The children focused on a different Nursery Rhyme each day and have had a host of activities, workshops and special visitors to make it  a really exciting and enriching week!  Thank you to all the parents for joining our afternoon Rhyme Time with our Music Teacher Mrs Porrett, it was lovely to come together.  Fun Fact: The Grand Olde Duke of York isn’t just great at marching, he even filmed this fun video below for us!

Farm on Wheels Christmas Visit to EYFS

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are so proud of how well the children have settled into Coleham School and the progress they have made in a such a short space of time.  The children are starting to rehearse for the KS1 Nativity performances.  We like to make Christmas at Coleham a really special time for the children and so we have arranged a special nativity visit.  Our friends from Farm on Wheels will be visiting on Monday 11th December and bringing with them the animals from the nativity story (a Donkey, lamb, calf and Turkey!) What better way to bring the nativity story to life!

In order to cover the cost of this event, we kindly ask that parents contribute the amount of £4.50 per child.  Payment is to be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the day.

We are really looking forward to this extra special Christmas visitor.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Harris

EYFS Nursery Rhyme Week

Dear Parents and Carers,

13th – 17th November 2023

World Nursery Rhyme Week is fast approaching, and we are delighted to confirm that children in Reception will be taking part. The initiative, launched in 2013, promotes the importance of nursery rhymes in early childhood development with a particular focus on how nursery rhymes boost early language and literacy skills.

We have a number of activities planned throughout the week to celebrate various Nursery Rhymes. Please see below:

  • Monday (Old Macdonald had a farm) – Visit from a Mobile Farm
  • Tuesday – (The Grand Old Duke of York) – Visit from The Grand Old Duke of York
  • Wednesday – (Pat a cake, Pat a cake) – Cake Making Workshop
  • Thursday – (Dingle Dangle Scarecrow) – Scarecrow Making Workshop
  • Friday – (The Wheels on the Bus) – Vintage Bus Ride around town
  • Friday – Dress up Day

In order to cover the cost of these events, we kindly ask that parents contribute the amount of £10.50 per child. Payment is to be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to Nursery Rhyme Week (13th -17th November).

In addition to these events we will also be holding a Rhyme Time in the school hall led by Mrs Porrett, for children and their parents/carers. These will take place on the following dates:

  • Badgers Class – Tuesday 14th November at 2:30pm
  • Foxes Class – Wednesday 15th November at 2:30pm

We would love as many of you as possible to come along, but appreciate that some of you may be working. In these circumstances please do invite an alternative carer such as a grandparent, family member or whoever would normally collect your child on that day.

Finally, on Friday 17th November we would like to end the week by inviting children to come to school dressed as their favourite Nursery Rhyme Character. Please do not feel the need to purchase costumes and go to lots of expense. I’m sure lots of you already have a variety of dressing up clothes that can be adapted. You may even choose to make something simple. Please see below for some examples:

  • Little Bo Peep – Simple dress with a sheep toy
  • Jack and Jill – Everyday clothes with an empty bucket
  • Old Macdonald – Dungarees and Checked Shirt or animal costumes
  • Little Miss Muffet – Dress with a spider
  • It’s raining it’s pouring – Child in wellies
  • Hickory Dickory Dock – Mouse Ears

We can’t wait to celebrate a wonderful week of rhyming with your children. Please do speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Harris

EYFS Enterprise Event

Our Careers Education is an important part of what we do at Coleham and so this year we are extending it to ‘enterprise events’ so the children can think about the different skills required to run a business including teamwork, leadership, advertising, sales, accounting etc

A massive well done to Badgers and Foxes for running our first enterprise event!  Staff and children made chocolate apples as Autumn treats and packaged them to sell.  The children set up shop and sold these to the older children for £1 each.   Thank you to Asda, Shrewsbury and Guy Groves Orchard for donating the apples for our fundraising. Amazing teamwork and financial management and over £250 profit raised. Well done!

Hindu Visit for EYFS, Year 2 and Year 5

Instead of going on a trip to a place of worship, we have arranged for EYFS, Year 2 and Year 5 pupils to take part in a Diwali workshop at school on Friday 10th November. During the day, children will take part in various activities to learn more about the Hindu faith, with a focus on Diwali and the festival of lights.  The workshop will allow the children to explore making music with authentic Indian instruments and will centre around the story of Rama and Sita and the Festival of Light.

We would be really grateful if parents can contribute £4 per child towards the cost of the workshop. Payment is to be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the workshop please. Many thanks.
