Sol wins ‘once in a lifetime trip’! 🐢

We are beyond thrilled for Artist Sol who has won the Darwin200 competition judged by the Doodle Boy.  You may remember us promoting the competition in November 2023.  Sol’s painting celebrates the life and discoveries of Charles Darwin and he has won a life changing experience and trip to the Galápagos Islands!

Darwin200 is a conservation initiative and they are sailing a historic tallship around the world following Charles Darwin’s voyage aboard HIMS Beagle two centuries ago.

The ship is serving as a floating lab for 200 “Young Darwin Leaders” from all over the world who are conducting experiments at the various ports Darwin visited and Sol will be flying out to meet the ship and stay onboard for a week.

We are so, so proud of Sol for working hard to continually hone and improve his artistic talents with determination and ambition.  This is an incredible opportunity for Sol and his family and we can’t wait to hear all about it!

Science Week 2024

Thank you to Miss Harris for organising the best Science Week!  This year we explored the theme of ‘time’ in outer space with a visiting Planetarium and through a dinosaur and fossil workshop.  We kicked the week off with a fun assembly from Supersonic Sue who runs Science Cub.  Year 3 learnt all about bees and honey with Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Society students, Year 5 delved into colour experiments with Priory School Science Teacher Tamara and Year 6 had Rory and Dr Nichola visit from Lascell’s Science Manufacturing.

Lascells showcased sound waves using a Rubens Tube, looked at radioactivity with a cloud chamber, demonstrated how stars form using a gravity well and the whoosh bottle was perhaps the most exciting of all.

It is great for Year 6 to dip into some KS3 Science and hear from people in the industry ready for their next steps to Secondary School and future careers.

Overall, we’ve had a brilliant TIME!  See the highlights in our showcase video.

Priory School Science

Year 5 experienced a secondary school science lesson from Priory School Science Teacher Tamara who helped the children experiment with colour.  Thank you Priory! Its great to use the expertise of colleagues at 3-18 Education Trust and for us all to better understand the journey from KS2 to KS3 science!  Building a stronger curriculum.

Dr Nichola From Lascells

Science Week 2024! Year 6 had Rory and Nichola visit them from Lascells Science Manufacturing with some impressive Physics equipment.

They showcased sound waves using a Rubens Tube, looked at radioactivity with a cloud chamber, demonstrated how stars form using a gravity well and the whoosh bottle was perhaps the most exciting of all.

It is great for Year 6 to dip into some KS3 Science and hear from people in the industry ready for their next steps to Secondary School and future careers.

Pupils made the film below to show you all

Beekeeping Society

Science Week 2024! Year 3 received a Beekeeping workshop from students at Shrewsbury School.  These pupils are part of the Shrewsbury School Beekeeping Society which is in its 40th year.  The children learnt about different kinds of honey, the hive, protective clothing and how the students look about the bees.  Thank you Shrewsbury School!

Beekeeping with Shrewsbury School

Year 3 had a fantastic Beekeeping workshop during Science Week with students from Shrewsbury School’s Beekeeping Society.  It was fantastic!

Headteacher Letter re: Lockdown Procedure

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our school is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our pupils and our priority is to keep the children safe at all times.  I am writing to remind you about our Lockdown emergency procedures, we have in place, should our school ever need to go into ‘Lockdown’.  A school lockdown is the opposite of an evacuation.  In a ‘lockdown’ children and staff remain inside the building for their safety.

It is standard health and safety practice for schools to have lockdown procedures in place as it is good practice for schools to prepare for all situations regardless of how unlikely their occurrence may seem.

As you may know, there have been a couple of local incidents, in previous years where we have had to initiate the partial lockdown procedure, in real life circumstances so staff and children are familiar with lockdown procedures and we always inform the whole school community after the event.

Please read a brief summary below.

Lockdown Procedures

Lockdown procedures should be seen as a sensible and proportionate response to any external or internal incident, which has the potential to pose a risk to staff and pupils in the school.

Lockdown procedures may be activated in response to any number of situations including:

  • A reported incident / civil disturbance in the local community.
  • An intruder on or outside the school site.
  • A warning being received regarding a risk locally, of air pollution (smoke plume, gas cloud etc)
  • The close proximity of a dangerous dog roaming loose.

There are two levels of lockdown :

Partial lockdown (Amber) during which staff and pupils remain in the school building. School activities carry on as normal, however, entrances and exits to the school would be locked and monitored closely.  All staff are aware and on alert to be vigilant.  Younger children and parents would not be aware of the situation in this instance.

Full lockdown (Red) during which all staff and children would remain inside the building.   Internal and external doors and windows would be locked and staff and pupils are to remain seated, quiet and out of view.  Children would be fully aware of the situation in this instance and the school would follow instructions from the Emergency Services.  Parents would be informed in this situation.

The Lockdown procedure is available on the school website and all staff have been trained on the procedure.  We will be refreshing our awareness of this procedure with staff and children in coming weeks and carrying out a practice exercise of a ’partial lockdown’.   Primary Schools are not advised to complete ‘Full Lockdown’ drills due to the children’s age.  We will talk to the children about this in assembly and in classrooms with class teachers in a sensitive manner.   It is obviously not our intention to make any child feel anxious, however it is important that we have procedures in place and practice these to ensure everybody is clear on what they need to do.

Our school site is extremely secure and access is restricted, so we are almost operating on ‘partial lockdown’ as a normal everyday routine.

Please discuss this with your children and we will continue to update you on all important safety matters.

Yours sincerely,

 T Larkham

Coleham is Outstanding!

We are proud, happy and thrilled to be recognised as an ‘Outstanding’ school.

To be graded outstanding in all areas is a huge achievement for all the staff and the children, past and present, who have worked hard every day over the last decade to make Coleham School the special place it is.  As a school, we have not put things in place or done anything special for the sake of Ofsted, neither before the inspection nor during it, and it is important that we are recognised for doing what is in the best interests of our community.

Thank you to everyone who plays a part in our school community, the inspectors have certainly seen Coleham for what it is!  We will now continue our journey, making sure that Coleham remains a great school at the heart of the community for many more years to come.  Please enjoy reading the report and of course, you know we have a little video for you all!

Headteacher Letter re Ofsted Inspection Outcome

Dear Parents/Carers,

OFSTED INSPECTION OUTCOME & REPORT

I am delighted to be able to share with you all the outcome and final report from our most recent inspection, conducted in March.  This inspection was a full, graded inspection, as apposed to the 2021 inspection which was not graded.  This was the first graded inspection since 2013.

Ofsted have graded Coleham School OUTSTANDING in all areas: the best possible grading for a school.

Ofsted look at 5 areas when inspecting a school:

  • Quality of Education
  • Behaviour & Attitudes
  • Personal Development
  • Leadership & Management
  • EYFS

To be graded outstanding in all these areas is a huge achievement for all the staff and the children, past and present, who have worked hard every day over the last decade to make Coleham School the special place it is.  As a school, we have not put things in place or done anything special for the sake of Ofsted, neither before the inspection nor during it, and it is important that we are recognised for doing what is in the best interests of our community.

Thank you to everyone who completed the parent survey and spoke to the inspectors: they have certainly seen Coleham for what it is!  We will now continue our journey, making sure that Coleham remains a great school at the heart of the community for many more years to come.  Please enjoy reading the report: we will be releasing the report to our wider community on our website tomorrow, alongside a special, short celebratory video in true Coleham style! The report will also be available on Ofsted’s website in a week or so.

Thank you, from all of us, for your ongoing support.

Yours sincerely

Collector buys Lauren’s Art 🎨

A massive well done to Artist Lauren.  Lauren sold one of her pieces in Mrs Jones Art Shop & Gallery.  The collector who bought the picture was so taken with it, she handwrote Lauren a letter to say how much she loved it!  We love it too!  What a great picture of Pooky the cat.   Such a clever and thoughtful illustration, it would look great on tea-towels and prints in UK homes! Well done Lauren for showcasing the Year 6 school value of ambition! Never stop creating and making art, it is good for the soul.

Friday Night Dinner

Now this was something very special! A fantastic bunch of children hosted Friday Night Dinner for their families and cooked up a storm with professional chef @thehungryguy and Ali founder of Shrewsbury Food Hub ♻️ We turned the school hall into a restaurant and the children were challenged to cook for 40 people who would be arriving in 75 minutes! The restaurant team nailed it to get service out on time! They prepped, cooked, cleaned down, laid up, served, waited and finally enjoyed the fruits of their labour, delicious! 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳

It was an incredible experience for all of us, a whole lot of love went into the Pasta Pomadoro and it was felt all around the room.  It really is a powerful and moving experience when a community of people come together to achieve something wonderful

Year 2 had a fantastic medley of a trip incorporating Geography, History and Art!  They started off at Shrewsbury Museum for a printing workshop, they had their lunch in the Quarry park and took some time to study plants finishing off with a history tour, deep down in the Shrewsbury Archives where they saw documents dating back to 1400! It sounds fascinating!
