Yr 2 Parents Invite for School Food Roadshow

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have an exciting event planned for Year 2 in the last week of term and we would love for parents/carers to join us.

The School Food Roadshow will be visiting to host a live cookery show.  Two teams will have  a live cook off and the children will learn lots about healthy eating along the way!

This will take place on Wednesday 17th July at 9.10am.

Family members are invited to come along on the morning (there is no need to book in, we like to keep things simple and admin free for parents)  If you are working then please do send along the Grandparents who may enjoy a visit into school.

We are looking forward to seeing you for this exciting, interactive show.

Kind regards,

Mrs Field and Mrs Allan

Athlete Adrian Patrick leads Coleham Circuit Training

As a finale to our Olympics Week we were visited by a third medal winner!  Sprinter Adrian Patrick, a Commonwealth Games Gold winner for 4 x 400m relay led the whole school in circuit training.  These intensive 8 minute sessions saw the children do sit ups, press ups, squats and jumps which we all loved.  The perfect Friday morning work out! He talked to us in assembly about always remembering our vision and dream and not being distracted by behaviours that won’t lead us to our end goal.

What a week of incredible experiences.  Thank you to Miss Lewis for all her hard work and meticulous organisation.

Quiz Night next Friday

Come along to our brilliant quiz night next week.  The Coleham Staff team were invited along to the Dough & Oil Quiz night this week and went along, purely for research purposes of course, and so you may see Mr Larkham being inspired by some new rounds!  (Team Coleham were the winners by the way, just in case you were wondering)

We have some tables left for Friday’s quiz so we’re happy to take walk-ins on the night.

THIS FRIDAY

Fancy unwinding at the end of the week!  Stroll down and join us for drinks in our beautiful garden.  It’s open to all and you may pay on the gate.  Supporting our school funds by having a lovely evening…

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

What a super Olympic Week we have had this week – a huge thank you to Miss Lewis for putting together such an amazingly inspirational week of visitors and activities.

I have spent many hours and hours pouring over all your children’s reports over the last week and have thoroughly enjoyed reading such lovely comments: your teachers really know your children well.  End-of-year reports are always a big job, but it is one of my favourite jobs of the year!  Reports will be coming out on Monday 8th, so please do make sure your child hands you an envelope!

For Wednesday and Thursday next week, I will be at Thomas Adams School in Wem, and their Headteacher, Mr Mark Cooper will be at Coleham.  This is part of our ‘Head Swap’ activities where Headteachers across our Trust spend time in each others’ schools speaking to children and staff, observing lessons and finding out what it is like to be part of another school.  This is always a fascinating and interesting experience with lots to take in and learn.  Please do take the time to say hello to Mr Cooper at the school gates on Wednesday and Thursday.

Enjoy this week’s newsletter and have a lovely weekend!

Tom Larkham

Mr Jones retires

Our legendry Caretaker Mr Jones is retiring from Coleham School.  There is no job too small or too big for Mr Jones especially when it comes to dressing up and appearing in our crazy videos!  To mark the occasion, we will be asking all staff and children to come dressed up as Mr Jones or one of his many alter egos from Coleham videos past aka The Grinch, Snowman, James Bond, Simon Cowell, Disco outfits, Liverpool supporter or his classic attire of caretaker overalls. With 420 Mr Jones lookalikes on site we should get plenty of work done!  Shhh its a surprise!

Olympics Showcase Song

Our Olympics Festival Day was fantastic and we finished with a showcase song to parents.  Mrs Porrett led the children with ‘We are Shropshire’ and ‘Wavin Flag’.  There is nothing more powerful than when we come together to sing on mass.  Our Coleham Community all together! A lovely end to the day.

Beth Tweddle visits

Olympic Gymnast Beth Tweddle visited us for our Olympics Week!  What a fantastic day! In a whole school assembly she talked about her gymnastics journey from age 7 to winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in London 2012.  She told us about the importance of fitness and healthy eating and the amazing team around her that contributed to British Gymnastics success.  Year 3 and 4 were lucky enough to have a gymnastics session with Beth before every pupil in school went to collect a signed photograph to take home! An incredible day of memories and all to inspire the children ready for the Paris 2024 Olympics! Beth is flying out to Paris in a few weeks to cover the gymnastics events.

Olympics Festival

What a day!  Miss Lewis organised a day off curriculum for our own Olympics Festival.  It started with a whole school run to Paris, the equivalent of 435 miles.  For 20 minutes all the children and staff ran around the schools grounds and it was such fun!  500 happy faces walking, jogging, running to Paris with the music motivating us.

Out Festival contained sports stations entirely run by our year 6 cohort of Sports Leaders who were fantastic at explaining, demonstrating and encouraging the children.  The younger classes were buddied up with older classes working together which was really lovely to see. The children participated in long jump, high jump, relay hurdles, triple jump, an Olympics quiz, shot put before stopping for an outdoor picnic lunch.  In the afternoon the children played badminton, handball, discus, javelin, relay and we finally finished with a  showcase song to parents.  Phew!! What an action-packed day!  Now we are all ready to watch the Olympics starting on 26th July.

Sea Shanties @ Music club

Jump & Jive Music Club were joined by visitor Lisa on her accordion for their mini-concert on Monday. Along with rowing songs on their pirate ships, the Jump & Jive pirates sang sea shanties  including ‘Wellerman’ and ‘Drunken Sailor’ and danced a pirate jig with their parents!  Great singing Jump & Jive!

Thank you!

Thank you to our lovely family The Hartshornes.  During the Belle Vue Arts Festival Scarecrow Trail they sold lots of paintings with the proceeds split between Coleham and NSPCC charity raising approx £200 for school. Thank you to Betsy and Flora for all the sales they made!  We really appreciate the funds for school.

Mrs Dixon’s 40th Anniversary

Congratulations to our longest serving staff member Mrs Dixon who has marked her 40th work anniversary at Coleham! What an impressive achievement! Mrs Dixon has helped thousands of children at lunchtimes over the years and has worked approximately 7,800 school lunchtimes! Mrs Dixon is a valuable member of our school community, thank you to Mrs Dixon, for her commitment and care to the many, many children she has helped over the years. Some of these children are now bringing their children and grandchildren to school.

New Gallery Exhibition

The Townsend Art Gallery has a new exhibition! Featuring Year 3’s art created for the Belle Vue Arts Festival along the theme of ‘Treasure’.  These gorgeous Egyptian Pharaoh Portraits, don’t they look stunning?  Well done Turtles and Starfish!

Admission is £5 with bars from Paso-Primero wines and The Old Market Hall’s Gindifferent.

Next week is OLYMPICS WEEK

We have had to change the days around for Olympics Week (due to events outside of our control)  So Festival Day is now on Thursday with a parents showcase song at 2.45pm at the Lower KS2 Playground.  Please come and join us!

To make life easy the children can wear PE kits ALL WEEK!  (any shorts and t-shirts are fine if you can’t find enough PE kits)

Thursday is also a picnic lunch day in school (instead of a hot meal) with an outdoor dining room.

Our friends at Bowbrook are having a festival afternoon if you are looking for a family friendly event for the weekend.

Year 5/6 Sports Day

Thank you to everyone for coming along to our Year 5/6 Sports Day! The last Sports Day for our Year 6 Leavers.  Lots of House spirit in the Coleham Athletics arena.  The House water race was a great chance to cool off! Road Safety Competition

Lots of our children entered a competition with Shropshire Council Sustainable travel team to create a superhero mascot for their road safety promotional campaign.  They received entries from 22 schools!  Bobby was one of the winners!  Pablo the Puffin will be turned into an animated character as part of the new ‘Our Journey’ programme. Fantastic news for Bobby who loves to spend his time drawing.

Sophia, Flora, Ella, Pip and Gene were awarded runners up certificates.

Well done everybody! Coleham Creativity shining through!

Historic Open Gardens

On Sunday we held a Historic Open Gardens event part of the Belle Vue Arts Festival.  It was an absolute privilege to show the community our unique and special grounds, many of whom had no idea that we have a listed Coach House, Victorian Museum, Folly, Pond and Conservation area.  We have such a unique and fascinating site that lies hidden behind Greyfriars Road and is part of Shrewsbury’s local history.

Miss Othen’s History Club have been trawling through our school archives for weeks in preparation and gave our guests personal tours and a wealth of information about the stone Folly that originates from St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury and the Limes Estate.  Well done to our pupil History Guides Toby, Finlay, Alice, Mae, Perdy, Lauren and Martha! You were all so impressive in communicating with the public.  Big thanks to local archaeologists Matt who is currently filming for Time Team and Janine for being on hand with an assortment of local finds from The National Trust including a 5000 year old Neolithic axe head.  What a fascinating afternoon of local history.
