Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Here we are at the end of another successful academic year.  It’s always a funny time of the year: no one could imagine the final day being here 11 months ago when we started in September, but SO much has happened!  Children in EYFS starting school are now fully fledged; Year 6 are at the end of their primary school journeys; 100s of children enjoying success in their classes and wondering what the next year holds, and I have managed a full year as Headteacher without burning the school down! It’s a happy time to reflect on everything that’s come our way and everything we have achieved or overcome together.

We are saying goodbye to 4 incredible members of staff who have been instrumental in forging Coleham’s place in our community, but also saying hello to new faces who will carry the torch onwards.  Change is part of life and that’s what we all need to embrace to make the future strong.  We want to celebrate those moving on, children and adults, as new adventures beckon and exciting new things are yet to be discovered.  Good luck to everyone leaving Coleham school today: Coleham will always be part of you and you will always be part of Coleham!

As Chilli says to Bluey in ‘Camping’: it’s sad when good people come into your life, stay for a bit, but then have to leave isn’t it?  But the part they were here for was good, and maybe that’s what makes it worthwhile.

Thank you to everyone who has said hello on the playground this year, supported us and helped to make COleham School such a lovely place to be.

Have a super summer, and we will see you in September!

SEND update: important information

We are excited to have become part of the Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) funded by NHS England in partnership with the Department of Education, Department for Health and Social Care and the National Network of Parent Carer Forums (NNPCF).

The purpose of the project is to improve the experience of mainstream school for children who may have an additional educational needs and neurodivergence.

As part of this project, we will receive support within school on both strategies to implement and environmental changes as well as support from Parent Carer Council for Shropshire (PACC) to ensure we capture and consider parent voice.

After our first open meeting last week with PACC, they have sent a survey for all parents within the school community to complete.  The survey is open for 2 weeks and will close on Thursday 18th July.

Please access the survey using this link: SURVEY

The information from the survey will be used to understand the current strengths and potential areas of improvement in our school.

Please also see the attached letter from the PACC team with more information about the survey.

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a week!  We certainly picked the right days this week for our Sports Days!  A huge well done to all the children taking part: there were some excellent moments of sporting behaviour and it was wonderful to see the children cheering on their Houses and celebrating the victories of others, too.  Well done also to Miss Lewis who has been busy organising with Mr Halford.  Not only that, but our crack team of Year 6 helpers did a fantastic job of running it all so smoothly.  Finally, congratulations to Severn and Darwin who, out of the 3 events, had a victory each and a shared victory!

More sport is coming next week – it’s Olympics Week!  Lots of exciting activities and special guests to come…

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Welcome To Year 6 Parents and Carers Meeting

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Wednesday 10th July, we would like to invite you to a special ‘Welcome To Year 6’ evening at school.

This will be an opportunity to meet Mrs Morgan and Miss Featherston, and get an insight into what this important final year of primary school entails, what the expectations are and how you can best support your children in what can be a challenging but ultimately brilliant year of their school journey.

In the presentation, we will go over:

  • SATs
  • Responsibilities and expectations
  • Parental support
  • Use of mobile phones and social media

There will also be the opportunity to ask questions you may have, or gain reassurances of things that may be worrying your children.

There will be two opportunities to be part of the presentations on the day in the school hall, at 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm and there is no need to book.  Please just show up.

There will be some important messages in the presentation, so we hope that all of our Year 5 parents and carers are able to attend, and children are also advised to attend so they hear the same messages.

Yours sincerely

Maria Stennett

Upper Key Stage 2 Leader

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

It finally feels like summer and school is feeling just as sun-shiney (if that’s a useable adjective) and happy.  Lots of fun happening this week: Year 4’s Tudor Day (poor Mr Jones!), the smoothie bike, an art gallery trip, a WONDERFUL EYFS assembly and a discos tonight – so much going on!

Next week we gear up into proper summer term activities: sports days!  Following that we have our Olympic Week with some very exciting visitors and events planned.

Year 5 parents: please have a read of our ‘Welcome to Year 6’ event, which is happening on 10th July.  This will be a great opportunity to get to know a little more about Year 6 and everything that goes with it.

IMPORTANT GATE INFO

From Monday 24th, the only gates being opened for families to enter the school will be:

  • The corner gate (opposite the butcher’s)
  • The main gate (at the front of the school)

Children will all line up in the usual places – this is a measure to increase security of the school site at drop-off times.

Enjoy your weekends, everyone!

Perdi’s Charity Cycle

Perdi Haynes in Year 6 has completed a 10 mile sponsored cycle on Sunday to raise money for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.  She has raised £367 for the Lingen Davies Cancer charity and they were thrilled.

It’s wonderful to see people in our community living up to our school values- well done Perdi

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been another busy week in school with trips out, Shropshire Sings, sport and lots of art going on.  The children have really enjoyed visiting the Barnabas art exhibition and seeing their own work on display.

The summer feels like it is moving along with the start of the Euros today – all the classes have had a team allocated to them so we’ll all be looking out for our teams’ progress!  I have been given Italy this time round so I’m hoping for great things…  In assembly this week we talked about the benefits of exceptional teamwork, and I showed them the famous Brazil team goal from the 1970 World Cup and also the individual brilliance of Gazza’s goal against Scotland in Euro ’96 – lots of children have talked to me about those goals and working as a team, which is great.

With any luck, the weather will take the hint about it being summer so we can properly look forward to our own sporting activities, with Sports Days happening the week after next (week of the 24th June) and our Olympic week the week after.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the football if you’re watching!

Classes for 2024-25

Dear Parents and Carers,

Following my letter last half-term about changes to staffing, I’m delighted to be able to inform you all of the classes and teachers for September.

Miss Turner and I will continue lead the school, along with our Senior Leadership Team, details of which are contained in the table below:

Headteacher Mr Larkham
Deputy Headteacher Miss Turner
SENDCO Miss Jones
Business Manager Miss Othen
EYFS Leader Miss Harris
Years 1 & 2 Leader (KS1) Mrs Young
Year 3 & 4 Leader (LKS2) Miss Heap
Years 5 & 6 Leaders (UKS2) Mrs Stennett

As you will also be aware, it is our normal practice to mix the children who are currently in Reception, Year 2 and Year 4.  Today, the children in those year groups have been informed of their mixes for next year: if your child is in one of these year groups, you will receive a separate letter later today detailing which class they will be in and who their teacher is for next year.  All the children across school (apart from one class) have met their new teachers briefly today.

Below is a summary of staffing for the next academic year (September 2024 to July 2025)

  • EYFS Badgers and Foxes mix move up to either Year 1 Hedgehogs (Mrs Young) or Squirrels (Mrs Rank)
  • Year 1 Hedgehogs move up to Year 2 Rabbits (Miss Cox and Miss Turner)
  • Year 1 Squirrels move up to Year 2 Owls (Mrs Field)
  • Year 2 Rabbits and Owls mix move up to either Year 3 Starfish (Miss Heap) or Turtles (Mrs Mukhopadyhay and Mrs Harrison)
  • Year 3 Starfish move up to Year 4 Whales (Miss Armstrong)
  • Year 3 Turtles move up to Year 4 Dolphins (Miss Lewis)
  • Year 4 Whales and Dolphins mix move up to either Year 5 Leopards (Mrs Stennett) or Lions (Mrs Allan)
  • Year 5 Lions move up to Year 6 Giraffes (Mrs Morgan)
  • Year 5 Leopards move up to Year 6 Elephants (Miss Featherston)

Our HLTAs, Mrs Butler and Mrs Ward will continue to work across different classes to support PPA cover for teachers and providing any other required cover, led by Mrs Storey.  Mr Halford will continue to deliver PE to all classes each week and Madame Jones will continue to teach French in Key Stage 2.  Mrs Porrett will also be in school 2 days a week to lead and teach music to all classes across the school.

To help prepare the children for next year, we have organised some transition sessions over the coming weeks.  On Monday 1st July, the children will spend the afternoon getting to know their new teachers in their new classrooms and on Wednesday 10th July, they will be spending a whole day with their new teachers.  These invaluable opportunities will help alleviate any worries your children may have about moving up into the next class.  On both of these days, drop off and pick arrangements will be the same as you have done all year.  There may be more opportunities between now and the end of term for transition activities, and the mixed classes will do more work in their new mixes.  We will encourage the children to speak to their new teachers when they have the opportunity, and we will also be able to arrange any extra transition if necessary.

Before the end of term, we will send out details of next September’s collection and drop off points (and times) for each year group and remind you again before the end of the summer holidays.

We hope that sending this information out early and running the various different transition sessions will help the children feel well-prepared for the new academic year ahead.  Of course, if you do have any worries or concerns, please do contact your child’s current class teacher who will be happy to help.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Larkham

Staffing News for next year: Changes & Welcomes!

Following the retirements of Mrs Munns and Mr Edwards, and Mrs Howson leaving Coleham, we have some exciting news about new faces and changes as a result.

Miss Jones

Miss Jones will step out of the classroom in September and take over as SENDCO from Mrs Howson and join our Senior Leadership Team.  Miss Jones has been an excellent classroom teacher for the past 2 years at Coleham and has very quickly become a valued member of our community.  She will be SENDCO at Coleham for 3 days a week, and will be brilliantly supported by Mrs Howson as she starts her new exciting chapter.  I am confident that she will be an excellent SENDCO and will help to continue driving our school forward.

Mrs Rank

With Miss Jones stepping out of the classroom, there are 3 vacant teacher positions for September.  We are thrilled to announce that Mrs Rank has been appointed as a new teacher after completing a year training as an apprentice here at Coleham.  Mrs Rank has been an incredible TA and cover HLTA for the past 6 years, and has worked incredibly hard on her ambition to be a classroom teacher.  She has impressed us greatly this year and it was a real no-brainer to keep hold of her!  Congratulations Mrs Rank – we all look forward to the future!

Mrs Mukhopadhyay

Following Mrs Munns’ retirement, we’re delighted to announce that Mrs Mukhopadhyay will be job sharing with Mrs Harrison from September in Mrs Munns’ place.  Mrs Mukhopadhyay has been a qualified teacher for many years, and has been a valuable member of our community as a cover HLTA over the past year.  She is an excellent classroom teacher with experience across primary, and we are very happy to secure her services for a teaching post that she deserves.  Congratulations!

Miss Heap and Mrs Stennett

Please join me in congratulating Miss Heap and Mrs Stennett who will be joining our Senior Leadership Team as Phase Leaders of Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 respectively.  Both Miss Heap and Mrs Stennett have been excellent servants to the school community for many years and will be superb leaders for their phases.  They replace Mr Edwards in his retirement and Miss Turner who has been leading Lower Key Stage 2 this year.

Miss Mackey

We’re really happy to announce that Miss Mackey, who many will know from Breakfast Club, has been taken on as a TA from September after impressing through volunteering, demonstrating an excellent can-do attitude and boundless positivity.  Well done and congratulations Miss Mackey!

Mrs Bayliss

We’re excited to introduce Mrs Bayliss to everyone – Mrs Bayliss is an experienced TA who will be starting in September and supporting in KS1.  She really impressed at interview and we’ve glad to be able to further strengthen our excellent team of TAs.  Welcome to Coleham, Mrs Bayliss!

New Teacher: Miss Featherston

Our final addition to the teaching staff is a new face!  After a thorough and rigorous recruitment process, we are very excited to inform you all that we have an excellent new teacher starting joining the team in September.  Miss Featherston currently teaches at a school in Telford and impressed us all at interview.  She plans to come to the Plant & Craft Fair tomorrow, so please do look out for her and say hello!

We are not yet able to announce which teachers will be in which year groups at the moment, but we are finalising those details, as well as class mixes (for those year groups who are mixing).  We will be able to share those details with you very soon!

Lily the Orangutan Hero!

After learning about the plight of Orangutans in class, Lily in Year 2 decided to get busy raising money to help.  Over the Bank Holiday, Lily decided to hold a book sale to raise as much money as possible.

She raised £50 selling books, and raised even more money online – now she has raised over £200 all on her own!  Well done, Lily!

What a great achievement and what a wonderful thing to do: the world needs more heroes like Lily to help protect it.

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

What an incredible week it has been.  It has been a great relief to be able to share our Ofsted report with the wider community – thank you to everyone who has taken their  time to congratulate staff for their hard work: it is very much appreciated.  It’s always good to have an excuse to celebrate the community we live and work in and what has struck me is how proud the children are of themselves and their school – you can really feel the pride when the children talk about Coleham!

This week has been a busy hive of activity around all things science.  Huge thank you to Miss Harris for organising lots and lots of visitors to school to share new experiences with the children, including an exciting assembly for all the children, including fire, bangs and pops!

A special well done needs to go to Lauren in Year 6 for selling her very first piece of art in Mrs Jones’ Gallery!  I hope Lauren will remember us and come back to visit when she is a famous artist!

And finally, don’t forget that tomorrow (27th April) is World Tapir Day – sadly not a school day, but worth checking out if you don’t know anything about tapirs.

Have a lovely weekend!

Road Closure Reminders

Please remember that Greyfriars Rd is closed to all traffic (except emergency vehicles at residents requiring access to the front doors) at the start and end of the school day.  The times are as folllows:

  • 8:20am – 09:00am
  • 2.50pm – 3:30pm

Please DO NOT park up before the road is closed and exit before the road is reopened.  We have had a small number of complaints and have seen a number of people collecting children and then driving on the pavements or removing cones without replacing them.  The closure is an important part of school safety and the traffic restrictions are legal requirements.

If you need to drive to school, please do make use of the parking at St Julian’s Friars.

Please do remind anyone else who drops off or collects your children – this newsletter only goes out to registered parents and carers.

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s hard to believe that we are at the end of the Spring Term already!  I say that it’s been a busy week every week – but my goodness: this week has been BUSY.

Despite a small interruption mid-week, we have had great success in cross-country running, including several top-10 finishes and 1st places champions; some fantastic art supported by parents in Year 4; and two nights of the most fantastic performances of Alice in Wonderland!

The children have truly been on top form, showing what being a Colehamite is all about.  I am in awe of the children here at Coleham and the way they demonstrate the school values so brilliantly in everything they do, from sporting endeavours to performing on stage.  What a credit they are to you all!

Regarding our visitors this week: the outcomes of this visitation will not be known for a little while.  Over the coming weeks, the report will need to be written, checked and will have to go through a process before being released.  We will, of course, write to you when we are able to.

Thank you to all of you for your support this week.  I have had several parents and carers pass on good luck wishes, and lots of people checking in to make sure everyone is OK, and over 180 of you filled in the parent survey this week.  It really means a lot to us all to have your support – you are amazing!

Have a lovely Easter break everyone, and we will see you back in April!

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

It’s been another busy week with lots going on at school – the first full week back after Christmas is always particularly tiring and I’m sure all the children will be looking forward to a restful weekend.

Playtime snacks:

We try to make sure that our school is as healthy as possible and have always asked that any playtime snacks brought into school are healthy food, such as fruit.   EYFS and KS1 children are all provided a piece of fruit each day by the Government.  We have noticed a lot of other unhealthy snacks lately, on the playground, which also has the effect of producing a litter issue around the school.

International Day

Remember that it’s International Day on Tuesday – I’m looking forward to seeing lots of interesting things and maybe trying some international food.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Here we are at the end of a very long but productive first half-term of the year.  I hope that everyone gets the well-earned rest they need and can come back fresh and ready for an exciting second half-term and the last one of 2023.  We have lots to look forward to: more trips, more visitors and of course – lots of Christmas events!

This week has seen Coleham crowned X-Country champions, a visit from the Fire Service, and a long-distance trip to Liverpool for our Year 6s, a Roman Day and Pumpkin Party for EYFS.

Please remember that the first week back sees out Parents’ Evenings (Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th) so please, please make sure you have booked your slots.

Well done, everyone, on a great start to the year, and have a lovely week!

Christmas Dates Reminder

Our Christmas Performance Dates are on the website

Our EYFS/KS1 Nativity and KS2 Nativity concerts are always a very special occasion for us all.  The singing in school sounds incredible and you will be in for a real treat!   The performance times for parents are as follows:

  • Tuesday(05/12/23) 1000-1100: Performance for Year 1 parents
  • Tuesday(05/12/23) 1330-1430: Performance for Year 2 parents

  • Friday(08/12/23) 1330-1500: Performance for Year 6 parents

Guidance

  • Please be kind and only attend your child’s nativity
  • Please aim to attend the performance set aside for your child’s year group.
  • For those wishing to see siblings, you may be able to see them all in one EYFS/KS1’s nativity (Monday and Tuesday) includes EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 in the same show.  KS2’s Nativity (Thursday and Friday) has Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 in the same show.
  • Those of you with a child in each Key Stage can, of course, see both shows
  • The KS2 children will be performing all around the church and in the aisles, so every seat in church will have a good view, including those at the very back of the church.

EYFS Enterprise Event

Our Careers Education is an important part of what we do at Coleham and so this year we are extending it to ‘enterprise events’ so the children can think about the different skills required to run a business including teamwork, leadership, advertising, sales, accounting etc

A massive well done to Badgers and Foxes for running our first enterprise event!  Staff and children made chocolate apples as Autumn treats and packaged them to sell.  The children set up shop and sold these to the older children for £1 each.   Thank you to Asda, Shrewsbury and Guy Groves Orchard for donating the apples for our fundraising. Amazing teamwork and financial management and over £250 profit raised. Well done!

Parent Governor Election

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are writing to inform you of a vacancy for the role of parent local governor on our Local Governing Body (LGB).

The role of the LGB

The school’s LGB is responsible for providing confident and strategic leadership, and creating robust accountability, oversight and assurance for the school’s educational and financial performance. The LGB is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

The role of a parent local governor

As a parent local governor, you’ll work with the LGB to ensure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in ensuring that the LGB is connected with, and is aware of the views of, parents and the local community.

To be a parent local governor you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children.
  • Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • The specific skills required to ensure the governing board delivers effective governance.

Being a parent local governor can be demanding but very rewarding.  All local governors serve a three-year term of office and under usual circumstances, can expect to spend between 10 and 20 days a year on governance duties.  These include:

  • attending meetings of the LGB, usually outside of school hours and contributing to LGB business;
  • reading reports and papers and keeping up to date on the progress that the school is making; and
  • visiting the school from time to time during the school day.

You will have to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and sign the local governors’ Code of Conduct.  A copy of the Code of Conduct, Role Description and more information about the LGB can be found on LGB’s pages of the school’s website.

We have a supportive induction process which will enable a period of settling into the role.

How to apply

If you’re interested in applying for the role, please email the Governance Professional, Carole Warner by email by 10am Friday 27th October (carole.warner@318education.co.uk).

You should also include a personal statement (approximate 250 words) to support your application.  We encourage candidates to be succinct when setting out the skills, experience and attributes that they can bring to the LGB to support their application. Nominations of other parents will be accepted, but please seek their prior consent.

Applications/nominations can only be accepted from parents or carers who have children registered at the school on the day that nominations close. If we receive more applications/nominations than there are vacancies, an election will be carried out. We will inform you after the nomination deadline if we have to do this.

If you have any queries about this process or would like to find out more about the role, please contact the Chair of the LGB Mr Dave Jones or the Headteacher, Mr Tom Larkham

Yours sincerely,

Mr Dave Jones                                                      Mr Tom Larkham

Headteacher Message

Dear Parents & Carers,

This week has been full of trips and visitors!  A huge thank you goes to all our brilliant careers visitors this week.  All the children have been involved in our careers week, learning about the varied and interesting work members of our community do (or used to do!).

The experience provided to our children is invaluable and will hopefully inspire everyone.  I very much enjoyed taking the time to speak to Year 2 about zookeeping and answered some very interesting questions about giraffes and various animals’ favourite foods.

EYFS have been busy this week with their Enterprise week.  They have been designing, creating, marketing and will be selling their very own chocolate apples!  The other children in the school have been to the hall this morning to buy their goods – a bargain at £1 per apple!  Well done EYFS – I will eat mine as an after-school treat.

Please remember to book your Parents’ Evening 10 min meetings which will be on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th November (the first week back after half term).

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Puppy Friends

For Careers Week EYFS Children had a visit from a Dog Trainer and learnt all about the role.  They also learnt about Dog Safety e.g. how to approach dogs, asking permission to stroke etc.

Hindu Visit for EYFS, Year 2 and Year 5

Instead of going on a trip to a place of worship, we have arranged for EYFS, Year 2 and Year 5 pupils to take part in a Diwali workshop at school on Friday 10th November. During the day, children will take part in various activities to learn more about the Hindu faith, with a focus on Diwali and the festival of lights.  The workshop will allow the children to explore making music with authentic Indian instruments and will centre around the story of Rama and Sita and the Festival of Light.

We would be really grateful if parents can contribute £4 per child towards the cost of the workshop. Payment is to be made via your child’s Arbor account prior to the date of the workshop please. Many thanks.

Jess Melville

RE Leader/EYFS Teacher

Lunchathon

This half term we have had a House Competition for the children to design main courses and deserts.  Well done to the children below whose recipes were chosen.

NEXT WEEK the children will be taking over the Menu and our Chef Manager will be cooking their recipes instead of the normal menu.

House points will be awarded 100pts, 75pts, 50pts and 25pts for the most popular day’s menu based on dinner numbers, waste and pupil opinion 🙂

The salad cart, vegetables, fruit and yoghurt will be available each day.

How we communicate with you

We understand how tricky it is to manage work, a household and all the school appointments/administration for your children!  So we aim, to streamline our communications as best we can with this weekly Newsletter.

Our website is always live and is the first place we post letters and events.  See the Parents Section for Newsletters, Letters Home and Calendar dates.

Going forwards we will also attempt to send all our school letters on FRIDAYS to avoid multiple emails across the week.  (sometimes we may need to send out urgent or last minute emails but we try to avoid this where we can)

Teachers use Dojo for sharing the children’s work with you as a ‘window into the classroom’ and can also use this for smaller class reminders.

Parents Evening Appointments

Parents Evenings will take place on the first week back after half term.

Don’t forget to book your slot online at the web page below
