Headteacher letter 21st October 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is hard to believe that we have reached half term already: it has been action packed and busy but very enjoyable.  The children and staff are certainly ready for a good break and I am sure that you are too.

Today we have enjoyed our whole school Diwali Day, organised by Miss Melville our RE curriculum leader.  The children have explored the festival of Diwali through taking part in a range of activities and have also enjoyed a special lunch menu too.  They have certainly learnt a great deal about this special Hindu festival and enjoyed dressing up in their own clothes for the day.

New School Website

We hope you are using the new school website.  All events, trips, dates and letters are uploaded here and then forwarded onto you, meaning that it is up to date at all times and can be your first port of call for any query.

Parents’ Evening

Please remember to book in your parents evening appointments as these will take place after half term.  The link can be found in the ‘Parents Area’ on the school website.  They will take place on:

  • Wednesday 2nd November: 4:00 pm – 7:20 pm
  • Thursday 3rd November: 4:00 pm – 7:20 pm

School Uniform

Please ensure that your child comes to school in the right uniform each day.  It is really important that all children have a Coleham jumper or cardigan (with the school logo), not a generic blue jumper.  Please also ensure that your child comes to school wearing plain black footwear.  Please click on the following link to view a list of our uniform: https://colehamprimary.co.uk/home/joining/what-you-need-to-buy/

Everything is available to buy at local supermarkets, except the school jumper.  We are keen for our children to look smart for school and also feel a sense of belonging by wearing the appropriate school uniform.  We keep spare logo jumpers in school if you ever need to borrow or replace any lost jumpers. If you would like some support financially with school uniform, please contact the school office or let me or Mr Larkham know; we are happy to help.

Careers Week

We have our Careers Week taking place after half term.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our children to hear about many different and exciting careers.  Many of you have jobs that the children will never have considered before, and you may be the inspiration a child needs!  We’d love to see as many families getting involved as possible, so please do contact the school office if you would like to share your stories of working life with the children.  It is never too early to inspire our children to follow their dreams.  We are looking for some more half an hour visits with years 1, 2 and 3.

Remembrance Day

After half term, we will be commemorating Remembrance Day and will be supporting the Royal British Legion charity with their Poppy Appeal fundraising.  The School Council will visit classes in years 1-6 with Poppy merchandise after half term.  If children would like to bring in small change, they can purchase poppies, snap bands, wrist bands etc. The suggested donation for items is between £1 and £1.50.

All that remains is for me to wish you a restful and relaxing half term break and I will look forward to seeing you at the school gates when we return on Monday 31st October.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Jones

Hindu Workshop for EYFS, Year 3 and Year 5

Instead of going on a trip to a place of worship, we have arranged for EYFS, Year 3 and Year 5 pupils to take part in a Hindu workshop at school on Thursday 3rd November. The one-day workshop will be provided by Hinduism Education Services. During the day, children will take part in various activities to learn more about the Hindu faith, with a focus on Diwali. The sessions will include storytelling, dressing up in traditional Indian costume, and other topics and activities related to Hindu worship, culture, values and lifestyle.

As we have no other way of funding the workshop we would be grateful if parents can contribute £2.50 per child towards the cost of the workshop. Payment is to be made via your child’s ParentPay account prior to the date of the workshop please. Many thanks.

Headteacher Letter

It’s been another busy week here in school.  On Monday, we had a visit from our new Trust CEO, David O’Toole, who spent the day with us and chatted to staff and children.  He was extremely impressed with the children who were engaged in their learning and were demonstrating our school values and Coleham School rules of kindness, respect and good working.   Classes have also been busy with their various activities including: swimming; woodland work lessons; and Year 3 had a safety visit from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service which was great fun!

New Website

You may have noticed that we have a new school website which we were delighted to launch this week.  It is really important to us for families to be able to easily access up-to-date school information.  We have worked hard to ensure that it is easy to navigate for you all.  Please use this to find ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION including school letters that you may have missed by email; to see calendar dates which will include trips and the trip information and news items of what we’ve been up to in school.  You will also notice that there are Classroom Pages: here you can see all of the staff that work with your children, class trip dates, the curriculum bulletins and PE days.  Teachers will continue to update you with weekly classroom news and ad-hoc classroom messages via ClassDojo

You can access the website by clicking on the following link:  www.colehamprimary.co.uk

We recommend you bookmark the Update page for quick access to parent information:  https://colehamprimary.co.uk/home/parents-area/updates/

2023-24 Term Dates

The term dates for 2023-24 have now been set and the school holidays have been input to the website Calendar.

Parents’ Evenings

We have also set this term’s parent consultation evenings.  These will be 10 minute appointments, in school, where you will be able to discuss anything about your child’s time at school.  They wil take place on:

  • Wednesday 2nd November: 4:00 pm – 7:20 pm
  • Thursday 3rd November: 4:00 pm – 7:20 pm

A letter will be sent out next week giving details of how you will be able to book your 10 minute slot online.

Careers Week

We have our Careers Week taking place after half term which we wrote to you about yesterday.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our children to experience stories of all those interesting and exciting careers many of you have.  Many of you have jobs that the children will never have considered before, and you may be the insipiration a child needs!  We’d love to see as many families getting involved as possible, so please do contact the school office if you would like to share your stories of working life with the children.

Relationships & Health Education

In a few weeks time, there will be a Relationships and Health Education Information Evening (previously known as Relationship & Sex Education) with our PSHE Leader, Mrs Field.  The presentation will give you information about how we teach the children this subject and will also provide support for parents to talk about these topics with your children at home.

Relationships and Health Education Curriculum Evening for Parents on

Wednesday 19th October between 3:45 – 4:30pm in Year 2 Owl’s classroom

It is highly recommended that all interested parents from across the school attend this meeting, but it would not be appropriate for children to attend.

House Competition

Next week, we are looking forward to our first House Competition of the year, which will be a singing competition organised by Mrs Porrett.  We even have a special guest from Shropshire Music Service judging the KS2 competition!  Watch out for the results on ClassDojo.

It only remains for me to wish you all a relaxing and restful weekend!

Year 6 Arithmetic Homework

One of the main objectives in Year 6 is to help all of our children achieve their best in maths. Part of this effort will be to ask pupils to complete some short, arithmetic-focused homework which will help to consolidate their learning in class and help prevent avoidable errors in the various calculating methods.
The homework, which will be weekly, will be set on the Monday of each week and we will ask it to be returned to school by the Friday of the same week.
Whilst our homework procedures state a ‘no homework policy’, it does allow for Year 6 to complete some calculating practice, which this is a part of. The homework tasks are not compulsory, and there will be no expectation to complete it, nor sanctions applied for not completing it. However, we would strongly encourage all children to complete it, as it will be of great benefit to them in the long term.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Mr Edwards and Mrs Morgan

Belvidere Visit Year 6
