CLASS MIXING (EYFS / Year 2 / Year 4)

At Coleham, we mix our classes at the end of EYFS, Year 2 and Year 4.  Soon, our staff will begin the process of organising the new classes for the next academic year and we want to let you know about the process and its benefits so that you are more informed and better able to support your child if they have any anxieties about the process.

Mixing the 2 classes widens our children’s social horizons, allowing them to make new realtionships with children they perhaps don’t know so well.  Eventually, all the children will be forced to make new relationships when they transition to secondary school, and we find that children from Coleham, and other schools that mix, fare better when this time comes.

Many children have made new friendships after a class mix, whilst retaining and strengthening existing friendships.  Making these new relationships (including those between children’s families) helps to further grow and strengthen our school community.  In addition, there may be negative relationships between some children in-class that can be broken.

It is natural for you children to be wary about being in a ‘new’ class, however, please remember that your children already know all (or most) of the children in their year group.  For some, it can feel as if they are moving to a completely new class in a new school with new, unknown children, but this is not the case.  Any children in their current class who are mixed into a different class will still be there at playtimes, and they will remain with many of the children they are currently with, whatever the mix.

The process of mixing is not a light undertaking.  We know the children really well here at Coleham, and we have a good understanding of the relationships in and out of class.  When mixing classes, we do not rely on any one source of information, but instead use a combination of soures to ensure that the best mixes are arrived at.  To find the best mixes:

  • we consult the children in a child-friendly way over their preferences;
  • we make use of ‘sociograms’, where relationships are mapped out through survey data;
  • we work as a team to use our professional knowledge of relationships, both social and work-wise;
  • we will also consult parents.

I attach a link to an optional form where you can, confidentially, share any strong feelings you may have about the makeup of the mixed classes; the form is not compulsory.  Please be assured that we will seriously consider any parental recommendations or feelings, but cannot guarantee anything at this point.  We are most likely fully aware of positive and negative relationships that your children have, but if you are concerned, I recommend you fill the form out.  If you choose to use the forms, please fill out on

 YEAR 4 Class Mixing Form

These forms will automatically close at 4:00 pm on Friday 28th April.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do get in touch.

Year 1 Phonics Screening check

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 1 Phonics Screening check

In June, all Year 1 children in England will take part in the phonics screening check. Within the screening check the children will be asked to read 40 words, some of which will be real words and some will be pseudo words. The children may also refer to pseudo words as ‘alien’ words. This screening check will take place on a 1:1 basis with either myself or Miss Cox. There is no time limit to the phonics screening check but it should take no longer than 10 minutes. The children are taught phonics daily and so preparation for this is already in place so please don’t worry about this.

Here is a link to phonics play PhonicsPlay – Resources (www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources) where you can play Dragons Den, Buried treasure and Picnic on Pluto without subscribing. These games focus on real and pseudo words and will be a good way to practise at home too. We will be sending a copy of the flashcards home by the end of the week. Please continue to read with your child daily – even if it is just for 5-10 minutes – and then write a comment in the diary. This is a perfect way for you to help your child develop their reading skills and continue their reading journey to becoming fluent readers.

Helpful hints when reading:

Explore the text – Talk about the front cover; read the title; make predictions; read the blurb; discuss the illustrations. Who is the author?

Phonics check – Open up the book; discuss any digraphs the book aims to practise. Are there any non-decodable words? Talk about their meaning if necessary.

Pre-read – Read the book to your child then have them read it with you. Talk about what you’ve read.

Your child’s turn – Have your child read the book aloud to you. Ensure they apply reading behaviours accurately. Encourage silent blending where possible. Encourage fluency and expression when appropriate. Make your child aware of punctuation; encourage them to use it to improve pace and fluency.

Comprehension – Ask questions about the text to ensure your child has understood what they have read. What and when questions are fine, but aim for open ended questions too such as: why do you think …? How would you….?

Quizzes – Sometimes there is a quiz at the end of the book. Or you could make up your own.

Follow up – Provide follow up activities suggested by the book that link to the themes and develop your child’s understanding.

Please do get in contact with us if you have any questions as we will be happy to help.

Kind regards

Mrs Young

KS1 and Reading Leader

World Book Day Reminder

Dear Parents/Carers,

WORLD BOOK DAY Reminders

Today – Wednesday 1st March – KS2 children will be having a fantastic author visit from James Nichol, author of The Apprentice Witch series and The Spell Tailors.  Afterwards James will visit Year 3 classrooms to lead a creative writing workshop with Turtles and Starfish.

Book Signing

James will be staying in school for a book signing session in the afternoon.  Some children may like to purchase a signed book of The Spell Tailors.(Books cost £7.99, please make payment as soon as possible on ParentPay so we can place our order).  Please note that there is no pressure or expectation to buy one: we will also be purchasing copies for school, so children won’t miss out on reading them!

Thursday 2nd March – Actual World Book Day.

Non-Uniform– Children may come to school dressed to represent their favourite book or character.  Please don’t feel the need to buy expensive fancy dress for this occasion: the children are so keen on being eco-conscious and re-using items you already have at home.  Equally, please don’t feel any pressure to make an elaborate costume.

Pop-Up Bookshop

We are collaborating with local independent book store, Pengwern Books, to open our own Pop-Up Book Shop in The Coach House so that all children can use their World Book Day token to select their own book to take home.  Classes will have a slot to visit throughout the day.

Special Lunch menu

Friday 3rd March – EYFS and KS1 Children will have a visit from local storyteller Sal Tongue.  We will have our DEAR slot as normal at 2:45pm (Drop Everything And Read!) but we’ll be changing this up with a fun variation this week.

Parent Survey

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope that you have all had a relaxing half term break.

Thank you to those parents who have completed our Parent Survey.  We are keen to gain the views of as many of you as possible and so if you haven’t already completed the survey, please can I ask you to find time to share your views with us?  As you know, we are always looking to improve every aspect of provision here at Coleham School and we really value your views and feedback.  The survey can be anonymous, but if you have specific concerns, it would be useful to add your name so that we can address them directly with you.  Please remember that the online survey is not the appropriate place to air grievances or make personal comments: please contact me or the office if you have any serious concerns that we can address.  Please click the link below to access the survey:

PARENT SURVEY 2023

The survey will close on Friday 3rd March at 3:00pm and we will, of course, provide you with feedback regarding the outcome of the survey once we have taken time to analyse the results.

Kind regards,

CONDOVER HALL: 9th & 10th MARCH 2023

In preparation for the impending trip to Condover Hall, we will be spending some time over the next week or so going through Condover arrangements with the children.  We thought that you also would appreciate a bit of additional information and clarification to help you prepare your children for what we are sure will be a very positive and exciting experience for them.

Packing & Preparation

  • CLEARLY NAME ALL CLOTHING AND PROPERTY!
  • If possible, choose a soft hold-all rather than a rigid case as this makes storage in the dorms easier and gives the children more space. Please DO NOT WORRY if this is not possible!
  • Please allow your children to be as involved in the packing of their bag as possible, this will help them to be more aware of what they have and where it is – it will also help them when packing for the return home.
  • Please provide a large plastic bag or bin bag for dirty or wet clothing.

Packed lunch for Thursday

  • Your child will need to bring their own packed lunch with them to school on Thursday 9th March (unless your child is eligible for Free School Meals and you have requested that we provide a school packed lunch) as the first meal provided by Condover Hall will be dinner on Thursday evening.

Medication

Put any medication in a container with your child’s name written clearly on the front along with clear instructions and dosage. Please let us know some time prior to our visit if your child will be bringing medication.

Thursday morning

  • We will ask the children to do the ‘big’ hugs and goodbyes at home before leaving for school.
  • Please allow your child to bring their own bag into the classroom.
  • Only come into class if you have to provide us with your child’s medication or if you have to tell us some new information.
  • Please be aware that if you wish to wave off your child, the coach will not be leaving until around 11.30am at the earliest.

Wednesday afternoon

  • The coach will return at approximately 3:30pm-3.45pm, depending on the traffic. We will phone ahead if delayed for any reason. Please watch the noticeboard outside school for any changes.
  • PLEASE WAIT INSIDE THE SCHOOL GATES UNTIL ALL BAGS HAVE BEEN UNLOADED – you will be able to greet your children before collecting bags.
  • Be aware that your child’s wellies/wet clothes bag may have become separated from their main bag – please ensure to collect ALL your child’s belongings.

DON’T FORGET

  • Water bottle – NOT GLASS

NOT ALLOWED

  • Mobile phones
  • Electronic games/devices e.g. PSP
  • Extra snacks/sweets
  • Cameras – school will be taking plenty of pictures/videos

ALLOWED

  • Maximum of £5 spending money – to be placed in a sealed envelope with child’s name and class written on outside

Hopefully, this information will help avoid any last minute worries or queries.  Your cooperation in these matters will be greatly appreciated and will contribute to the smooth running of the trip.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Miss Jones & Miss Lewis

YEAR 1 TRIP – BLISTS HILL VICTORIAN TOWN MUSEUM

As part of this term’s cross-curriculum work we have arranged for Year 1 to visit Blists Hill Victorian Town Museum, Coalbrookdale on Wednesday 22nd March. We will be leaving school at 9.15am and returning approximately 3.00pm, in time for normal home time.

The cost for this trip is £12.60, which includes entrance fees, transport and insurance. Payment should be made via your child’s ParentPay prior to the date of the trip please.

As Year 1 pupils are provided with free school meals as part of the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme, a packed lunch will be provided for all pupils. Please click on the link below to select from the various menu options available. All packed lunches come with a piece of fruit. If we haven’t received a completed packed lunch form for your child by close of play, Monday 20th March, we will assume they will be bringing one from home.

https://forms.office.com/e/f4cnR6dR4R

Children should wear their school uniform and sensible walking shoes for this trip and, as Blists Hill is an open air museum and the majority of our time will be spent outdoors, bring along a waterproof coat for possible cold/inclement weather.  No spending money is required.

Please note that this visit is covered by the Annual Consent Form for Trips/visits & Medical Information. Please notify the school immediately if there are any changes to your contact/emergency contact details or medical information.

End of Term letter with Parent Survey

Dear Parents/Carers,

Here we are at the end of another half-term, we are also at the half-way point of the whole school year!  Lots has been happening this year so far, as Ms Jones wrote about in the letter earlier this week.

STAFFING NEWS

As we go into the half-term break, I’m delighted to be able to inform you that we have successfully appointed a new Deputy Headteacher for September when I take on the Headship on a permanent basis.  In the new academic year, will welcome Alison Turner, who is currently the Deputy Headteacher at Much Wenlock Primary School.  She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience, particularly in maths, and will be a great asset to the school.

PARENT SURVEY

As you know, we are constantly seeking to enhance every aspect of provision here at Coleham School and we really value your views and feedback, to make further improvements.  The survey can be anonymous, but if you have specific concerns, it would be useful to add your name so that we can address them directly with you.  Please remember that the online survey is not the appropriate place to air grievances or make personal comments: please contact me or the office if you have any serious concerns that we can address.  Click the link below to access the survey:

PARENT SURVEY 2023

This survey will be open for two weeks and will close on Friday 3rd March at 3:00pm.

We will also be asking the children to complete a questionnaire after half-term in order to gain their views too.  We will, of course, consider all of your views as a Leadership Team and I will write to you again with the results and details of our plans going forward.  Thank you for taking the time to fill in this questionnaire.  Your views do matter to us.

STRIKE ACTION: WEDNESDAY 1ST MARCH

We are also able to confirm that school we be able to open as normal on Wednesday 1st March (first Wednesday back) which is the next planned date for national strike action by NEU members.

It only remains for us to wish you a relaxing half-term break!

Yours sincerely,

Mr Larkham & Ms Jones

Headteacher letter 15th February 2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we near the end of this half term, I write with some important updates and information.

Firstly, I am sad to let you all know that at the end of this term, Mr Venn will be leaving Coleham School to take up a new post at a school in Devon.  Mr Venn has taught PE for us here at Coleham for over 4 years and he has contributed so much to school life, running numerous sporting clubs, competitions and sports events.  He will be greatly missed by us all but we wish him lots of luck as he re-locates to Devon to be nearer to family.  We will, of course, be organising a sporting event to thank Mr Venn for all his hard work during his time at Coleham.  More information will follow after half term.

This half term has been a busy one.  The children enjoyed Francophone day, organised by Madame Jones, where they learnt about different French speaking countries.  They also enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year.  In addition, a number of trips have been organised by teachers, both local and further afield.  We are really keen to bring the curriculum to life through real life experiences for the children and we have even more planned for after half term, including the Year 4 residential trip to Condover and some exciting curriculum visits to Shrewsbury High School.

It was also lovely to welcome so many of you to the recent Coleham Quiz night.  Thank you to Mr Larkham, our Quiz Master.  Our recent school disco was also well attended and enjoyed by all.  We are now looking forward to the Plant and Craft Fair, which will take place in May and is part of the Belle Vue Arts Festival.  We’ll be holding a planning meeting for this after half term and warmly welcome parents and community members to come along and help with this event.  We will send more information soon.

After half term, we look forward to seeing you in school for Parents Evening.  Hopefully you have been able to book a slot with your child’s class teacher.  Please let us know if you need any support with booking your appointment.  When we return to school after the break, we are also looking forward to celebrating World Book Day and have a whole week of activities in school.  We have a storyteller visiting EYFS & KS1 and an author visiting KS2.  You are able to purchase a signed book for KS2 children on ParentPay for the author book signing if this interests your child.  Please see the separate letter from Mrs Young regarding this.  Finally, rehearsals are well underway for our school production of Jungle Book, which will be performed just before we break up for Easter.  Please look out for more information from Mrs Stennett regarding rehearsals and tickets!

Term Dates

The spring term is often a time when people look to book their annual holidays. If you are planning a trip this year, please do check our school’s website for our term dates to ensure that you are referencing the correct term dates.  We set our own term dates and so Shropshire Council’s term dates do not always correspond with ours, particularly when it comes to PD Days. Also, please be aware that we cannot authorise holidays during term.

Attendance

We are working really hard to ensure that attendance and punctuality remains high across school.  Please remember that good attendance is crucial and that most minor aliments (e.g. a cold, tiredness) can be dealt with at school.  We regularly speak to the children about the importance of punctuality and good attendance even if we are not feeling 100%.  Please can I ask you to deliver the same message at home to your children and, if in doubt, please send your child to school and be assured that if they are unwell while at school, we will call you to collect them.  Please remember that your child must arrive in good time to enter school at 8:50 am for registration and the school gates close at 8:55 am.

Uniform

Please remember to send your children into school in the correct uniform and with black school shoes (not trainers).  We are phasing out the old style red logo school jumpers and would ask you to please hand in any old jumpers so that we can swap them for new ones.  If you are having any trouble funding school uniform, please let us know; we are happy to help.

Class Assemblies

This term, a number of classes have performed their class assemblies – thank you for coming along to watch your children.  We have some more assemblies scheduled for after half term (please see below).  These assemblies are a chance for your child to share with you the work they have been doing here at school.  They will last for approximately 20 minutes and will begin at 9:10am on your allocated day.  Please head into the hall via the front door straight after drop off on your allocated day.

Class Date of assembly
Year 4: Dolphins 7th March
Year 4: Whales 8th March
Year 5: Leopards 14th March
Year 5: Lions 17th March (please note date change)

Finally, please remember that if you have any concerns or queries at all as the term progresses, do contact the school office.  Your child’s class teacher will usually be your first port of call but me or Mr Larkham are out on the playground most days, and are very happy to deal with any concerns you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Jones

Headteacher

Swimming – Year 3 Turtles

As part of the National Curriculum your child will be going to the Quarry Swimming Baths for swimming lessons.  Each lesson will take place on a Friday afternoon for 5 weeks, starting 3rd March and ending 31st March (inclusive), leaving around 1.15pm by coach provided by Birch Travel, and returning approx. 3.00pm.

Although the hire of the pool is taken in to account when setting the school budget, the cost of the transport is not. We are therefore asking for a voluntary contribution of £18.00 from each pupil towards the cost of the coach hire.  Payment should be made via your child’s ParentPay account in the usual way, by 28th February please.

We are asking parents to complete a Swimming Ability form for their child so we can organise the groups by their proficiency in the water. A link to the form is given below:

https://forms.office.com/e/bbsJipzmRs

We would be grateful if you could complete this form by Tuesday 28th February in order that we have sufficient time to sort out ability groups.

Please ensure your child remembers to bring their swimming costume (no bikinis please), goggles and towel in on the day they go swimming, as they will only be disappointed if they have to stay behind or sit and watch! Thank you.

NEU STRIKE ACTION

As you will be aware, there is planned strike action from the National Education Unioin (NEU) on Wednesday 1st February, owing to a dispute with the DfE.

I am writing to let you know that we will be able to keep Coleham School open on the 1st February, so please send your children in as normal.

If anything changes, we will, of course, let you know.  We will also keep you informed of the proposed strike days beyond the 1st February when we are able.

EYFS Parents Writing Meeting: Wednesday 15th February

On Wednesday 15th February we will be holding a session for parents on the development of Early Writing. The aims of the session are as follows:

  • Provide parents with more information on how writing develops in Reception
  • To share with parents what is expected in writing by the end of the Reception Year
  • To share strategies for supporting writing at home

At Coleham School we feel partnership with parents is important, and we recognise the difference we can make to our children when we work together effectively. We would therefore truly value your participation by attending this event. In order to ensure that the event is as accessible to as many of you as possible, we will be running the event at two separate times. We therefore request that you complete and return the slip no later than Wednesday 8th February so we can cater for the correct amount of people.

The event will take place in the School Hall, so please head straight to the main reception 5 minutes prior to your selected time.

Chinese Dragon Workshop for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4

As part of our religious studies, we have arranged for our Year 1, 2 and 4 pupils to take part in a Chinese New Year Dragon Workshop at school on Thursday 2nd February. Each workshop, provided by Sounds Roadshows, will include activities such as lion and ribbon dancing and music making on authentic Chinese musical instruments, and will feature two fabulously colourful 15 metre dragons. Very exciting!

As we have no other way of funding this workshop we would be extremely grateful if parents could contribute £3.70 per child towards its cost. Payment is to be made via your child’s ParentPay account by Wednesday 1st February please.

To mark the Chinese New Year, there will be a Special Menu on Thursday 2nd February

Strike Action

You may be aware that The National Education Union (NEU) will be holding strike action in the near future due to a dispute with the government over pay and funding.

The NEU has announced the following dates for the potential strike action:

  • Wednesday 1 February 2023: all eligible members in England and Wales
  • Wednesday 1 March 2023: all eligible members in the following English regions: East Midlands, West Midlands, Eastern.
  • Wednesday 15/16 March 2023: all eligible members in England and Wales.

The NEU is just one of many education unions represented at Coleham, so at this stage I do not know how this will impact classes in our school; I am writing to let you know that there may be some disruption on these dates.

Of course, I apologise for any potential disruption to your child’s education.  Please rest assured that I will write to you as soon as possible to let you know further details and if this strike action will impact any of our classes.
