At Coleham School we aim to inspire children to want to know more about their understanding of the world through the scientific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Science lessons at Coleham aim to provoke a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. In an ever-changing world, where our children’s future jobs may not even exist yet, it is vital that our children understand how science has already changed their lives and how it may shape their future. Science is vital to the world’s future prosperity, therefore the development of children’s experimental and investigative skills are of vital importance.
Children are encouraged to be independent and collaborative scientific investigators by their involvement in exciting practical investigations. They do this through exploration, observation, problem solving, prediction, critical thinking, decision making and discussion. Children are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. We aim to provide high quality science education that is highly engaging and motivating to all pupils. Therefore, our carefully planned and sequenced science curriculum is progressive and ambitious for all pupils.
Our Vision
Through Science, our children will:
be curious, asking questions that fuel explorations and investigations about the universe we live in,
develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics,
develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries,
develop accurate use and understanding of science vocabulary to explain, reason and describe what they see,
make progress in their learning every lesson, and throughout their educational journey at Coleham,
develop a love of science and have an awareness of the career opportunities that science may lead to.

Celebrating Science
Teachers make extensive use of our outdoor grounds including the conservation area, pond and large outdoor environment. Children are given the opportunity to extend their science knowledge through many trips and science clubs on offer. Our Space Club was really popular with the whole school getting involved for the launch of the weather balloon.
Watch the highlights of Tony’s exciting adventure through the skies of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire attached to his helium-filled weather balloon. He reached an estimated altitude of 30,000m (30km!) which is about a third of the way up to outer space!

Each year staff and children look forward to celebrating Science at our annual Science Week which sees a whole host of exciting lessons such as hatching chicks, feeding lambs and science experiments.
We have relationships with a variety of organisations that help us enhance our science curriculum, for example we have benefitted from STEM activities from Independent Schools. Teachers at Coleham work collaboratively with KS3 Science teachers in local Secondary schools and invite them to deliver engaging lessons to children in KS2 as part of our annual Science week. We are ambitious in our expectations and it is important to us that children are well prepared for the KS3 science curriculum at secondary schools. We are currently working with a manufacturer of science equipment to give primary teacher feedback for new resources and testing prototypes, this expert advice and CPD is proving invaluable to our teaching and learning. Careers in science is a focus for us, our children enjoy hearing about real-life scientific careers and we have been fortunate to have lots of visitors from people who have careers in Medicine, Ecology, Agriculture, Archaeology, Dentistry etc during our Careers Week.
