Information Technology

The content of the Computing curriculum at Coleham School is split into three areas:
Programming, Creativity (beyond computing) and Applying ICT in Society & E-safety

The Computing curriculum allows all children to learn about the important area of ‘Programming’.  There are many games and apps that children are already familiar with at home that allow them to develop their Programming skills at a very early age.  At School, we build on these skills and the children learn to create algorithms where they create a sequence of instructions to make ‘something happen’.

In Creativity, pupils interact with age-appropriate computer software for particular purposes.  In Key Stage One, they learn basic skills of creating, organising, storing, manipulating and retrieving digital content.  As they progress into Key stage Two, pupils learn to work more independently, selecting, using and combining a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices.

When Applying ICT in Society, all pupils learn to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly and identify where to go for support when they have concerns about the internet/other online technologies. In Key Stage Two, the pupils learn about computer networks; how they provide multiple services and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration.  E-safety is regularly addressed in school.

The Curriculum allows for progression, and using careful monitoring and assessment, pupils are able to build on skills that they accumulate as they move through school.  There are opportunities for our Gifted and Talented pupils to be challenged.  Some of the Curriculum is taught within other subject areas while other parts are taught independently e.g. e-safety, programming.  We are constantly investing in the latest equipment to enable pupils to achieve in Computing and appreciate technology in the real world.  Each year group has immediate access to a combination of digital devices to provide instant, and endless possibilities between pupils and technology.
