Welcome letter from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope that you have all had a relaxing summer holiday.  The start of the new academic year is always an exciting time for everyone in school and we are all really looking forward to another action packed and busy year here at Coleham.  In particular, I would like to welcome our new reception children into school today.  The children will be coming to school for mornings only this week to help them to settle in.  I will look forward to getting to know all of our new reception parents and children over the coming months as they join our special Coleham School community.  I would like to invite all Coleham parents along to our first coffee morning of the year on Thursday 13th September (8:45am onwards in the new classroom, near the EYFS building).  We hope to see you there.

Over the holidays, a lot of refurbishment work has been going on here at school.  We have had new adventure play equipment on the Key Stage 2 playground featuring a large Clamber Stack and trail installed to replace our old adventure playground, which had become rather tired and old.  The new area looks fantastic and I feel sure that the children will love playing on it at break and lunchtimes.  The Reception classes’ outdoor areas have been extended and improved to incorporate sand, gravel, mud and water play areas.  This will give our reception children more opportunities to learn and explore outside in a larger, louder and messier environment.  We have also worked with education consultants Early Excellence to improve the Year 1 classrooms, with new furniture and resources.  We are very pleased with the results; the classrooms look light and spacious and we are sure the children will love the new resources.   Finally we have fitted an oven and kitchen units to the outdoor classroom to provide a designated space for cookery within school.

There are a number of staffing changes, which I would like to make you aware of this term.  Firstly, Mrs Brazier will remain absent from school for some time, following an operation, which she underwent during the summer holidays.  I am sure that you will join with myself and the staff in wishing Mrs Brazier a speedy recovery.  In her absence, Mr Larkham will take on the role of Acting Deputy Headteacher, in addition to his role of Key Stage 1 leader.  I am also delighted to welcome Mrs Field and Mrs Allan to our teaching team.  Mrs Field, who will be teaching in Year 3, will also join our Senior Leadership Team as our SENDco and Mrs Allan will be teaching in Year 5.

If you would like to talk to us over the coming year about anything, please contact your child's class teacher in the first instance.  You are also very welcome to contact the relevant members of the Senior Leadership Team, either via telephone or email if you have any concerns, as we are keen to address any issues quickly and efficiently.  Please click on the link below to see Contact Details sheet for key members of staff within school.

I would like to invite you all into school on 17th September to an open classroom event, which will give you the opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher and discuss what your child will be learning about this academic year.  We will also host a Curriculum Evening on 15th October, to which all parents are invited, to gain advice from us regarding how best to support your child(ren’s) learning at home.  I hope to see you at these events.  Please see our school website which lists all key events within school.

May I take this opportunity to also mention that we will no longer be providing Coleham School water bottles.  For hygiene reasons, we would like the children to bring in their own drinks bottle, which can be filled up at school and kept in the classroom or in their schoolbag.  Children may then take their bottles home to be washed each night.

I will look forward to seeing you all around school over the course of the term, which promises to be busy and action packed, once again.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Jones (Headteacher)
