Following a restructuring of Shropshire Council’s Education Access Department, our school’s new EWO (Educational Welfare Officer) is now Mrs Emma Chafer. Mrs Chafer’s role in school is to work in close partnership with us to ensure that pupils arrive at school on time and their attendance does not fall below acceptable levels. Mrs Chafer visits us on a regular basis – at least once every half term – to look at our attendance figures/number of lates. She is then able to take suitable action to address any areas of concern.
I am really pleased to report that Mrs Chafer is very impressed with our attendance % here at Coleham. Currently, our whole school attendance % is 97.11%, which is excellent. Thank you to all parents and carers for working hard to ensure that all children attend school regularly and rarely miss a day of learning.
One of the areas for improvement, which Mrs Chafer has picked up on, is the number of children who are arriving late to school. Unfortunately, our office staff are recording a high number of children arriving late and accessing school via the front door because the side doors have been locked. This has a significant impact on children’s learning, particularly if they are frequently late because it means that they miss early morning activities and often the beginning of the first lesson.
I am writing, therefore, to politely remind all parents that children should be at school and in their classrooms for registration at 8.50am and not 9.00am. From Monday 5th February, we will be tightening up on our late procedures and will be handing out advisory notes to all children who arrive after 8.50am, in order to let you know exactly how many times they have been late since September. This will be monitored very closely by Mrs Chafer and school office staff so that we can ensure that improvements occur.
If there are specific reasons for your child arriving late and you would like to discuss this further, or would like our assistance in getting your child/ren to school on time please do not hesitate to contact me or the school’s Pastoral Team.
